I saw this article today. I hope it’s not a duplicate from the Cutting Staff or Shooting threads but I hadn’t seen it on here before. Short, but interesting read.

It deals with the lawsuits and “forseeability” of a security incident like the October shooting, and how it will force the resorts and venues to beef up security.

I didn’t know it before but the article says MGM lost a court case this year due to an assault in one of its casinos several years ago.

    The end result:

    Higher room rates
    More invasive security
    More assaults on personal privacy
Very little change in the actions of nut cases.

Four most dangerous words today: "Better Safe Than Sorry"

Agree. Do be diligent for your safety. You cannot control crazy evil. So be aware of our safety, but after that enjoy life.

This retort has never persuaded me, if only because I know I am being filmed pretty much constantly every time I step foot in a casino. The casinos also have my ID on file. If personal privacy was my main concern, I wouldn't be spending time in casinos

I just don’t know if I can enjoy a Vegas where there are security line waits to go in and out of casinos or resorts. One the most fantastic parts of Vegas to me is the ability to hop in and out of all the places up and down the strip and Fremont.

If I have to wait in a security que at each stop as I go, it would make me reconsider how valuable a trip to Vegas is vs a single local, like Cherokee or NOLA.

I think the casinos would be more likely to invest in the latest state in the art as far as scanners, to move people as quickly as possible.

Increased security was painfully obvious at Sams Town last week! They had guards at EVERY choke point to the hotel rooms. At the elevators on both casino levels and at the two (that I know of) out of the way tower entrances where you need a key card to get in. I did see them looking over a golf bag, but no inspection of roll-arounds or handbags, at least not with me.

Surprisingly, I did not get a "room check" even though I left the DND sign on for two days. They could have peeked in when I was not there, but no knock and no "random" mandatory inspection when I was not decent.

I agree with this. Not because its a privacy issue, but because I am anxious to get places and do things while I am in Vegas. Waiting in a security line every time I want to enter a resort kills that.

IMO, it seems like an unrealistic solution. I did get a bit concerned following the incident last month when the Wynn apparently used security lines to enter the property in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, but it appears that level of scrutiny only lasted a couple days.

Its only a matter of time that those choke points with people all lined up to clear security are going to be a target.

    Agree totally.

Any maniac can find a large gathering of people whether inside or queuing to go through security outside. The Manchester bombing was actually outside security in the foyer after the Ariana Grande concert.

Yep. It is only a matter of time before someone takes advantage of the thousands of people standing OUTSIDE the airline terminal because of a security lapse. By the way, the Brussels airport thing was before security. The crazy shooting in Ft Lauderdale was at baggage claim.

Boy this is a downer thread... all of our liberties are being taken away... assault on our personal privacy... higher room-rates... longer lines... choke points... blah, blah, blah... gloom and doom predictors rally here!

It seems like casinos everywhere else but Las Vegas have choke points for entry, but seldom are there lines except for the "possibly underage" line on the weekend evenings. 1-2 security folks will be scanning the line and will direct the younger ones to the ID check line.

As for being a target risk, lines for hotel check-in, buffet, show entrance, club entrance, etc., are all there right now.

All those other "choke points" are very lax. Little or no bag checks. No screening. No wands... so therefore - no lines. Add all those other things, and you end up with lines.

After 9/11 someone from LVRJ reported about how many people would be at the hotels on Tropicana & the Strip on a fight weekend and how that would be a huge target because of the mass amount of rooms and venues.

I think the end result will be to install the cameras on hotel floor people assumed were there. I also don't think it's clear that guns weren't allowed on resort property at all so I expect that to be more clearly stated. I think a case can be made that the casinos should have known a shooting was possible but I don't know if you can make a case this scenario was possible. Overall, when you think about different incidents on the strip in the past decade, I think it spells trouble from MGM here.

Which incidents? No need for great detail. Just general. Can google for more specific info. Thanks

No idea what specific incidents Leo is referring to, but there was that shooting several years ago in the casino at NYNY and the more recent incident outside the club at Ballys
