Wasn't the Luxor built by Circus Circus Enterprises with straight up cash they had made from Circus Circus Las Vegas? The place is a goldmine. They didn't even have to finance that casino in the 90's they had so much cash.

They underwent a major renovation when they filled in the bannister railing on the spiral staircase leading up to the midway. So many children were parked there while a parent was on the casino floor it looked like a jailhouse for five year olds.

My first trip to Vegas in 1995 I drove in from Tennessee and I remember it being the first big hotel/casino I saw and stopped at. In my head I thought this is going to be expensive!! It was a Monday night and my room was 17.99.....:headbang:

I also stole the 6 inch thick phone book !!

I like to stop in there once in a while when I go to the Peppermill for a drink. It reminds me of days gone by (my dad worked for a company that helped finance CC and I went there with my dad, as a wee lad of six y/o when they were constructing it) when the north end of the strip was extremely lively, 1980s. I expect it will be there for a while as there really is no reason to get rid of it. At some point they are going to have to poor some serious money into it but I suspect they are playing a waiting game in seeing what happens with some other projects on that end of the strip.

I haven't been inside CC since the late 80's. Once Excalibur and Mirage were completed i felt the big change was happening on the Strip and continued on through the 90's. Steve Wynn is to blame...LOL.
I would gradually abandon the North Strip, especially when Stardust fell under Miley Cyrus's wrecking ball.
However, CC is unique, sort of like the Indian Casinos here in California.
Most people, i presume, go to CC and stay there. Then they'll get into their SUV's and Winnebego's to spend time outside the city. Most of the CC clientele don't give a hoot about the mid Strip/south Strip because they either have a family and/or are retired and use CC as the home base to points Downtown, off Strip, etc. for their budget.

Circus Circus will be here for a very long time.....and i salute them for it.

Why close it down? It is obviously earning good money. Knock it down and have years and years of no income from it while they stop/start work on a new mega casino isolated on the North Strip.

I don't blame them one bit if they intend to sit it out. Do they really want to be the first to build a great new resort/casino on the North Strip and risk billions? Look at how others have tried i.e Fontainebleau, Alon or Echelon Place. You only have to look at the stop/start going on at Resorts World.

Personally I think it is better to keep as they are and if the North Strip rejuvenates itself in the future they have a huge plot of land to build a new casino/resort with less risk than being the first to attempt it.

But aren't there enough other places up to what you deem the proper standard?

This is a funny/weird topic, going on as it has for now five pages. If the doors are still open then it would seem the place is doing something right, and shouldn't that be enough? There seems to be some considerable angst for some. Are y'all being forced to stay/play at CC against your will?

I agree with that one , but at some point it's time to go, how nostalgic as it is ! if that wasnt the case the Sahara / Riviera / Stardust would all still be standing there.

And i like the fact that Circus Circus is a cheap hotel !!! But if they would break it down and make something new , it doesnt HAVE to be a 5 star super ultra resort, they can also make a really nice 3 / 4 star clean and nice hotel with low rates !

Stardust is a great example of a functioning property that might not have been to certain "standards," and when the decision was made it needed to become some newfangled fancy-pants swank joint ... look what we, and they, received in return.

CC isn't nostalgic, at least not for me. It functions. For many. Not me. I don't stay downtown, either, but I don't think it needs to become the Strip.

The standard for Vegas to a casino owner is how much profit it makes, not how many stars does it get on travelocity. I can guarantee that your concept of "Vegas standards" is not at all how Jim Murren is looking at it for a property that is excluded from the Mlife gaming platform.

That's like asking "how much longer would you expect any older casino to remain open . . . " Every casino has it's "clientele". When the clientele disappears, then the casino is soon to follow. As I drive around Las Vegas, passing my casinos like the "Eureka" and "Silver Sevens", I ask myself. "how is this casino staying open?

Good point Dailun. With Circus Circus, a large % of their "clientele" are gamblers with children. So you shouldn't expect them to close until there are no more children on this planet. And then at that point it will be a lot more things closing than the Circus Circus!

Why on earth would they build something new with low rates?

I mean, wishing for things is all fine and dandy and rather a lot of us would prefer something new or interesting to be there. But just because we'd prefer it doesn't guarantee we'd stay or play there, or contribute much at all to the cost of building it.

Sahara and Riviera did not have the niche Circus Circus does. They are not still there (Sahara is still standing ... just reskinned, and its replacement just sold again) because their business was unsustainable. There were down to trying to draw people in with $1 blackjack and the like.

The Stardust demolition (much complained of since) is a bit of an outlier as it was done in a different economic climate, and as such was a casino they likely could have kept operating, or spent far less to rebrand as opposed to demolishing it.

But there are two main motives to renovating or redoing a hotel casino. Reason 1: fill more rooms. Reason 2: be able to charge more for them and still fill them. So the idea that a magic fairy will tear it down and build you a newer low cost option that you like, in a town where hotel rates are still pretty absurdly low is not likely.

Boyd also almost certainly regretted demolishing Stardust. Especially after giving away Barbary Coast.

Unfortunately timing is everything and Boyd made the decision to upgrade the 'dust right before the economy tanked. Too bad that they closed the place and imploded it, had the economy tanked a year earlier then maybe the 'dust might still be operating.

Boyd sold BC years after the economy tanked so had extra cash to use for other endeavors. BC was their ace in the hole, they kept it and Harrahs couldn't develop the area from the IP/Linq all the way to Bally's. They also wanted an arm and a leg from Harrahs for the place. Luckily for Harrahs the economy tanked and all strip development plans were nixed.
