Also you can bet low minimums (maybe it's different for the Derby but someone can correct the amount) with a exotic bet that James mentions (I called them Fancy) where you pick 2-4 horses but when you box them, they can come in in any order. Like a $1 Trifecta box where you pick 3 horses to come in the top 3rd in any order, would cost you $6. Doesn't cost that much but you have potential to win more, and you can have different options going on.

I hope you have a wonderful time!

The South Point has a great Derby seminar on Friday at 6 and then they open there huge ball room Saturday it's a fun place to watch races.
I have a nice future bet on Classic Empire and exacta future on Classic Empire and McCraken. Plan on using those two along with Gunevera and Always
Dreaming in Tris and supers. Since Soniteer has drawn in may put him in 3 or 4 on some tickets. Really excited this seems to be most open Derby in years
    Should be some large payouts.

McCraken and Irish War Cry had great workouts this weekend. McCraken seems to like the dirt at CD. Irish War Cry was at Palm Meadow and looked fantastic.

Thinking the most fun would be betting a few longshots to win and maybe boxing a half a dozen combinations. Have never been to Vegas during but have watched and bet on it at a local track and, even there, it was quite an event.

Can probably do some betting already. Not sure what happens should your horse(s) ultimately be scratched, particularly if you're betting exotics like quinellas.

Things pick up once post positions are drawn. Definitely check into the seminars mentioned above.

Many places will give shirts or pins for making specific bets, usually in multiples of $20 or $50. It's a strong scene in the books on Derby Day. Nothing like Super Bowl or March Madness, but for the 60-90 minutes leading up to the race it's definitely hopping.

I usually pick 3 horses for a "dollar box exacta" which is a $6 bet, so if any of the three come in first or second, it pays half of the exacta payout. One of my buddies mentioned Classic Empire recently won the Arkansas Derby.

So glad I saw this. We will be there this weekend as well. I think we will bet the day before and get there early to watch the races the day of. We are at Aria. The dollar box exacta seems right up my alley.

    Here's my Derby Day Picks
Leading up to the Big Race there is a $.50 Pick 4 which I will have a lash at.
    Race 9: 2,4,5,7,10
    Race 10:1,2,8,12
    Race 11: 2,6,7,8
    Race 12: 14,15,17, 5 (18)
    Now For the Derby
As above my top 4 picks are
Classic Empire, but will be a smoewhat short price and is 2 for 2 at CD

McCracken is 3 for 3 at CD and moves up if there is moisture in the track and his is 3 for 3 at CD

Irish War Cry has ony one bad race and another that moves up if moisture

Always Dreaming is a solid horse but Pletcher is 1 for 65 lifetime at CD in 10 furlong races. but this one may break that spell.

I had Gormley as my early pick because when I got word before his first race that he was going to run like a monster, which he did, but he got dusted by Classic Empire in the Juveinile last fall.

Some bombs you may want to throw in your exotics are:
Thunder Snow who won the UAE Derby, but he has some attention span issues.
    Gunnerva wil be roling late
Battle of Midway has never been worse than 3rd

Let's make some money and as my old friend Harvey Pack says
"May The Horse Be With You"

    thanks mike
    my longshot is gunnerva
i'm playing alot of trifectas without ANY surprises
If any longshot higher than gunnerva comes in - i'm screwed............Midway would screw me.
"wide open field " ?............i'm going the other way + picking just the top odds
i will have my lucky charm w/ me during the race = my 5 yr old loves to cheer w/ me !
this year i'm spreading out my wad = less concentrated
ahh ?.......see if it makes me some $$$$ ?????

What happened to Hemsworth? He's not listed anymore, and I bet on him.

There's now a Hence running which was not on when I bet. #8, my lucky number.

Went into OTB yesterday after work.
    NO DERBY BETS !
    WTF ?
I said, "the post positions are up ?....why not ?"
Didn't get much of an answer " oh, it's 3 days away " --- and I was nice, cos the betting clerks don't set policies.
But I did get this advice "Don't show up Saturday afternoon - the lines are out the door !"
    My answer back : "That's why I'm here, NOW ." ( jaggoff ! )
    *
    Why no bets ?
Is it because all the cherry's will see their odds changing before the race + come back in, want a refund for better odds ( horses ) ?
    *
So with a wet track..........I may throw all may previous posted strategy OUT !
I just may go with a couple long shots..........the race track + large field = may spell chaos ?.......and the longshot slips in ?

    Hey Mike -
    You changing anything ?

    Mike -
    What is a " $1 Triple Box ( $6 ) "
    Slip says "6 bets Total : $6 "
I have a bunch of Trifecta bets -- but wanted to "box" a couple ----
ran into a snafu ( because of my lack of betting knowledge ) --
ended up w/ about 10 of these ?
What the hell is this ?
I let it go because --- what the hell ? -- stupidity may win, as well as any ?
And I put my 3 ( somewhat ) longshot bets to Win - in anyhow.
    *
    Question No,2
Does a "box" of a trifecta usually pay around half of a straight trifecta ?
    *
    You da man
    Thanks

a payout is based on a $2 bet, so a 3 horse trifecta box is $12, hence a $1 bet for $6 is half the payout.

    a $1 trifecta box of 3 horses, is $6, 4 horses is $24, 5 horses is $60

one of a good bets is a 10 cent superfecta box of 6 horses for $36...
if you can bet that bet for the derby, do it..could be worth thousands
