My wife and I are going to spend some time there this weekend. Any advice on what to do/what not to do/how to spend your time? Must sees?

I have a ton of photos in my TR from September/October here - https://www.vegasmessageboard.com/forums/index.php?threads/the-long-journey-to-vegas-sept-2016.135218/page-6#post-1369472

The road through has quite a few places to stop and look around, but I really liked the side road off to White Domes. Lots of good, short hikes there if you're looking for them. There is also a small loop on a dirt road that goes by Alstatl and Arch Rocks. Great petroglyphs just off the little picnic area on that loop. The visitor center doesn't look like much, but it's got some good info on the history and geology of what you're looking at. I recommend it as a first stop to get your bearings.

If I were to do the trip again, I would continue through the park (I doubled back) and go out along the lake. Or I'd go north into Overton and see the Native People's museum there for more history on the park.

Be sure to drive through those winding roads behind the visitor center and go all the way to the White Domes.

Also be sure to see Arch Rock, kind of behind Atlatl (sp??) Rock.

Assuming you're going from Vegas, the gas station on the turnoff the I15 does great breakfasts and coffee. And good pancakes ;)

Thanks for the advice. May try that next time. We're eating at Bouchon that morning.

Good info, something I've never done but will be doing in May. We did the ATV's there but that's outside the actual park. Then we went there a couple of years ago but it was 110 so we decided to do it another time.

Good call. It was 97 the day I was there and it was like walking on the surface of the sun. :haha: I saw the sign at the trailhead that said to carry water but decided since I was just going out a half-mile that I didn't need it. That was a mistake.

I went solo quite a few years ago and hiked to Mouse's Tank fairly early in the morning when nobody else was around. I sat down and took in the beauty of the area and realized it was absolutely quiet. There was no ambient noise of traffic, people, airplanes, electricity, etc. I haven't experienced something like that ever. Very peaceful. Then I drove back to LV and the beautiful sounds of the machines, laughter, etc. that we all love.

Valley of Fire was awesome. Weather was awesome. Temp was about 50 degrees when we were there. I don't think I'd want to hike it any warmer than that!

What I also liked was stopping off at the store right when you turn off to the VOF road. They had all types of fireworks that you could buy. Not sure where you would light them up but guess on the dessert you can probably find someplace to shoot them off at night.

Also, if you go through the VOF you can end up on the other side and take that side road (167) back to vegas. It also has a nice view and goes near Lake Mead, you can also drive by Lake Las Vegas. Going in the afternoon you really see everything in red going down that road.
