We are planning an early April trip staying 3 nights at the Golden Nugget. Have been downtown many times but have never stayed. One of our favorite restaurants is the Triple 7 Brew Pub at Main Street Station--they have great food, beers and awesome happy hour pricing. What are some similar restaurants to the Triple 7 that you would suggest we try? Anybody have a "favorite downtown happy hour" where you get a good value on food/drinks? Also, regarding the Golden Nugget, if anyone has any suggestions or recommendations as far as tower choice, the pool, or any other basic info to pass along, that would be great. Thanks All!

Magnolias and Chicago at 4Q, Tony Romas at Fremont. priced about same as 777. avoid Carson tower. lowest price but Rush or Gold would be better.

Make sure to sign up for their loyalty program!! and a Landry's card that will provide you with some discounts. All of their restaurants have excellent Happy Hours...check their website for menus. The Golden Nugget is a great hotel to stay in Downtown but folks tend to gamble elsewhere...

the Chicago brewing company at 4Q, is like a hidden gem. cozy and much smaller scale than 777 but really good. they have good pizza at a fair price.

the GN is one of the few places downtown that has a halfway decent pai-gow table.

No food - but Banger Brewery is good for some beer. Have groupon and specials through the day. Nice sit on patio to watch the people get on scale at HAG and people watch.

Eaglejohn, sallymanger and vegasdev: thanks for the replies! I just looked at our reservation and we are booked in the Carson Tower -- has it not been renovated in a while or is it the noisiest tower, or why to avoid that one? Will definitely check on upgrading to Rush or Gold, so thanks for the tip. I looked up infor on the Chicago Brewing Co at the 4 Queens and we will give that a try. Sallymander, you mentioned the Landrys loyalty card -- what property is that good for? Again, thanks -- looking forward to Vegas!

Pricey for DT, but Rush Tower is very nice. chart house, more pricey than 777 but excellent food plus the aquarium is just gorgeous. They have happy hour, can sit a bar and still enjoy the view. I would do Binion's ribs over Tony Roma's, much cheaper, not the selection but usually no wait. Personally I would pass on Magnolias, the Chicago place is good.

Can't go wrong with Rush Tower rooms at GN. If you like Mexican food the Cadillac Mexican Kitchen and Tequila Bar at GN is very good.

The Italian restaurant at GN, Grotto, is so-so. Totally agree that Chart House is a little spendy but the atmosphere is top-notch and the food is very, very good.

    Have a great trip!!!

Golden Nugget room, at least try to get the Gold tower rooms, no Carson rooms, they have problems and are a long walk to the casino. Gold rooms elevator opens up right in the middle of the casino.
For mid priced range, we love Magnolia's in 4 Queens or Dupars at Golden Gate. If you want to spend a little more, Binions is awesome! Its on the top floor with windows overlooking downtown, oldtime maroon booth seats, dark, kinda old mob vegas feel. And I think on weekdays they have a special that is really reasonable.

For really expensive, Hugos Cellar in 4 Queens is the old Vegas feel too, dark, romantic. Hope you have a great time!

I haven't stayed in the Carson Tower in a few years but never had an issue with them. True, the Carson Tower is the farthest walk to the casino and Fremont Street. At least some of the Carson rooms have been renovated recently......think they are called "Carson Premium," and those seem to be on par with the rooms in the Gold Tower, which were also renovated within the past several years. Bathrooms in both the Carson and Gold Tower are on the smallish side. As others have said, the Rush Tower is the newest one (opened in 2009) and the rooms within are bigger and have larger bathrooms.

As far as happy hours, you should check out Pizza Rock and Triple George Grill, which are right next to each other across from the Downtown Grand, roughly a block off Fremont Street (turn left at the D if you are walking along Fremont from the Nugget).

I gave up on the ribs at Binion's. the first time was good. second time just ok. the third time it all seemed old and rancid. Magnolia's is a good value if you have a coupon.

Go to their website www.landrysselect.com and it will outline all of the perks, their restaurants, etc. (Too many to list here.) For example, when you sign up they will load a $25 credit onto your membership card that you will be then be able to redeem at any of their restaurants, including those at the Golden Nugget! :feedme: You also get $25 for your birthday month! Membership used to get you an automatic room upgrade but I seem to recall someone posting that they've discontinued this perk. IMHO this is something worth signing up for.

also, I have heard, if you can find a retailer that sells landrys gift cards at a discount, you can use that gift card to pay for your room. then you will have gotten a discount on your room at the GN. but they still have that sky high resort fee.

I have stayed in all 3 towers, and the Carson works fine for me (the others are nicer, but cost more). Carson rooms are clean and decent sized, and usually quiet. I had to get moved one time because the room overlooked the event center, and I could see a band setting up. Knew that was going to be a noisy evening.

I dined at the Triple George Grill this past Saturday. Both the food and the service were outstanding.
