My granddaughter who loves all animals and can ride a horse (Medium ability) would love the experience of being on a working ranch. She is 28 ( single ). As we are from the UK then the term Ranch dosn't apply here.
Can anyone offer any suggestions eg parts of your wonderfull country she should be looking at possible April/May or what time is best ?
    Thanks in anticipation.

To work in the USA, I believe a visa is needed.... maybe check with the embassy. However there are many ranches that take guests (at a cost), just google "dude ranch"

To some of us, a lady working on a "ranch" (especially in Nevada) has a VERY different meaning.

My apologies to you and your granddaughter.

My buddy is a farmer. his days revolve around digging holes and replacing the fence the cows broke.

then he welds alot of equipment that breaks from use.

he also fixes alot of flat tires.

I agree with the dude ranch idea. America is a huge place, as you know, so she can find such an experience all over. April or even May at times can be pushing it weather-wise in the upper West. If she seriously wants a lifestyle and occupational and location change, then she should start with what it takes to establish lawful work status.

Not to discourage her, everyone has a dream, but ranching and farming are damned tough ways to make a buck. I'm sure she can do some creative on line investigating to get some answers.

Does she actually want to work on a ranch, or does she want to care for horses and maybe do a cattle drive and the "glamorous" things like that? If it's the latter, I think the dude ranch vacation is the best option. I wouldn't recommend Montana in April, maybe Texas or something else more in the southern edge of the US where it will be warmer.

Another option is to look into a volunteer opportunity at a rescue or sanctuary for horses. They are always looking for people to help out with care, feeding, grooming, etc of horses in their care. I'm not sure what the visa barriers are for volunteering at a rescue, so you may need to look into that further. Or maybe look into something in the UK like that so the visa issues won't apply.

This is a ranch I have visited several times. It's in Whitefish Montana in absolutely beautiful country. Very close to Glacier National Park. It's a little pricy but it is phenomenal.

Having escaped life on the rural route, I can attest that "working" a farm and going for horse rides are opposite ends of the entertainment spectrum. I think the OP should probably look at something along these lines: http://www.thebarw.com/?gclid=CJ_6wLD2vNECFY09gQodw-cJIQ. The novelty of scraping hooves and mucking stalls is short lived.

There are dude ranches all over the west. Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah and Oregon all have working dude ranches. It is a vacation my husband and I have considered.
