Gambling Sober

I was under the impression Gambling Sober was not allowed or illegal. I drink to make sure I stay on the right side of things! Can't be too careful. If drinking is not required I don't want to know.

 

Gambling Sober? Well, I do it a few times every trip... but only under duress or right after I get up... usually still drunk from the night before?
I have never driven an automobile in the State of Nevada so that's not even a problem!

 

I've been thinking about gambling sober for a while but just can't make it happen. Starts with one drink and the rest is history. It won't be fun but I'll definitely loose less money. I know they're not giving it out of sincerity but when I was in Macau playing at a 500 HKD (65 USD) minimum BJ and all they give is free water, I was pissed. Seldom do I get to this mid level of influence that I'm relaxed and not too drunk. I was thinking maybe if they charge a minimal fee say $5-7 for a cocktail, that might discourage a little from drinking too much...

 

I think it's great when people can play and not have adult beverages! Like you though Sonya, I'm not one of them...package deal. I'm totally the same, don't get drunk, (but nice and relaxed, I certainly wouldn't drive) but I do like my Cabernet while playing.

One time we stayed 7 days at MC, and the waitress came up to me and asked "Cabernet Lorraine?" My father in law cracked up, and still addresses me by that!

 

I usually avail myself to the "free" drinks while I am gambling in Vegas, but never to excess while I am at the tables.....I've been hammered, but had the good sense not to gamble in that condition. I've been out to Vegas several times with a friend who is in recovery and drank a lot of club sodas while we gambled together at the tables....still had a great time, so whether I drink or not drink alcohol while I gamble does not factor into how much fun I am having. Sorry to say I did drink and drive a few times when I was much younger...talk about being stupid; fortunately I had no incidents with the law. When I rent a car in Vegas(or anywhere else) I lay off the booze- if I know I am going to have more than one drink, the car stays in the parking ramp. I've had several close calls while driving sober in Las Vegas...Vegas drivers are something else.

Not Vegas related, but a true story that should make you think a little bit. An acquaintance of mine was driving home one night after drinking heavily all day. His car was hit by a train, with the entire front of the car completely torn away from the chassis. Fortunately by some miracle he was not seriously hurt. When the police arrived on scene, he was still sitting in the driver's seat, behind the steering wheel. When the cop walked up to him he said, "Officer, something is wrong with my car, it won't start!" He was so drunk that he didn't realize that he had been hit by a train. Talk about one lucky SOB.

 

Gambling sober and while drinking is two different experiences.
Although drinking may have caused me to lose extra it at times have help me win more because I played more aggressively then if i were sober.

 

Some people, like myself, simply are lightweights when it comes to drinking. One drink per hour is more than enough and that needs to be capped at 7 or 8. I make stupid, foolish decisions when buzzed and I hate that because I am not a stupid, foolish person.

I DO make a fool of myself at least once a trip, usually the first day. Other than that, I don't care to lose control, especially not when gambling.

 

It's really about knowing your limit, I've gotten better and better at that, the last couple trips I haven't even puked once!

 

Same here - I get nervous gambling; and the higher the bets the more nervous I get. Thankfully, the anesthesiologists (bartenders and cocktail waitresses) are there to reduce or entirely remove any discomfort. In fact, as long as you can pronounce anesthesiologist, you're probably okay. It's a fine balancing act between having enough to bet properly versus going totally nuts. That said, I usually drink like a fish in casinos and wouldn't want to play without the booze. Yep, that sounds really bad, doesn't it!

 

My father made me memorize the alphabet backwards for some reason when I was a kid and I still remember it, still waiting for an opportunity to profit from this knowledge.

 

As I get older I find it takes much longer for me to recover from drunken revelry. When I was in my 20s a bad hangover lasted for a few hours and then after eating and juice and coffee I was fine for another night of debauchery. Now, in my 50s, I find that getting drunk makes me feel like sh*t for at least 2 days afterwards. I don't want to waste 2 days of my vacation feeling like sh*t so I will drink about 3 drinks staggered throughout the day and never worry about driving. Driving around the valley is my favorite thing to do while in Vegas.

 

I know I'm repeating this recommendation, but next time before hitting the sack try a BIG bowl of those cup noodles, for me it reduces the bad hangovers by at least 75%, I assume it is the ridiculous salt content.

I drink alot and I love doing it. I also like my hard earned money so I have enough self control to keep it safe and sound in my wallet. I dont think gambling is a viable means of making money, i just see it as entertainment so its not like I will try to chase my losses or anything like that. Thats like buying a concert ticket and trying to listen and clap extra hard in hopes they will reimburse me for the ticket.

 

I heard it's a trick. They're looking for you to say "I couldn't do that if I were sober" or something.

 

I enjoy adult beverages in Vegas and drink much more than I would elsewhere. My traveling companion on my last two trips over-did it daily to the point she missed two shows I had booked, couldn't go out for a nice dinner and was in bed by 10:00 p.m. That takes the fun out of it when drinking excludes all other activities.

 

If you're just going to get falling-off-the-stool drunk or sit in the room for the entire vacation save yourself a lot of money and just get a room at the Best Western down the block from your home. (Operative point being 'for the entire vacation')

 

For some reason, as I get older I very seldom get hangovers anymore, even after an extended evening consuming 7-8 drinks. I just seem to wake up a bit more tired than usual.

 

I don't drink and I seldom gamble. So, I am good to go.
