One shouldn't even carry their SS card around.

in this day and age, no casino should be asking for your actual SS card. providing your state issued DL or ID, and SS # verbally should suffice.

I was excited to get my first handpay recently. The happiness faded....apparently, since we don't itemize, we'll be taxed on it! We are retired, don't own a home, and definitely have lost more than we've won. I have kept a gambling log... apparently for no reason! True?

I would mostly agree there's no reason for you to keep a gambling log for tax purposes. I don't know what you play, but if there's a chance that you could hit something big enough to make you better off by itemizing, you'll be glad you have it.

Whether or not you have a log, you can still itemize your taxes. My tax lady made it reals simple: Won: whatever is on the 1099. Loss: same number that is on the 1099. Net. $0. Did that 3 years in a row and I think you're fine for small 1099 wins. You hit for $50k and you're probably going to paying taxes unless you're a real player and genuinely can document losses to offset that.

I have a new tax guy and hope to have a 1099 or two for him to deal with.

    Hello,

Bring your soc. sec. card, keep it locked in the hotel room safe, then if you win a jackpot, you will have it, and will just need to show it to the casino where you won the jackpot, so they will release the funds.

My husband works in the casino as a surveillance agent and he has to film this all the time. If you don't have your soc sec card, they will hold the funds until you can produce it. At least, those are the rules at the casino where he works here in Nevada.

    Hope this helps.

I know each casino may have their individual rules regarding jackpots and the soc sec card. But, if you keep it locked in your hotel room safe, I would think that would be ideal, if you needed it. If you don't need it, no problem. And, one could always call the casino and ask what their rule is.

Now, if I could only win a handpay, I would be happy. LOL

    Thanks,
    K-9 treatbaker

I have NEVER been asked for my SS CARD, but your SS NUMBER is on the W2G. I don't even know where my SS CARD is in my apartment. (It's here somewhere.). But yes, you do need valid ID. My info has been in the CET system so long that my SS is in there but even in places where I've gotten a W2G that are new, I've never been asked for my SS CARD, but rather just my valid ID and confirmation of my SS number.

    Hi,
My husband works at the Riverside casino here in Laughlin, NV and that is their rule. They will hold funds until you produce a ss card. However, I realize Vegas casino's may have different rules, that is why I stated bring it anyway, and just lock it up. People can do what they wish, and hopefully will not have any problems if they win a jack pot. It does sound like Vegas has different rules.

This is the same for me, even though I don't get W2Gs that regularly. I have never been asked to produce the card itself.

There are so many reports of it, however, that there has to be some grain of truth to it. My hunch is that the "regulation" is along the line of a very nebulous "the casino may demand proof of taxpayer id" and such and in practice is only selectively enforced, say, during certain moon phases. :)

Taking a trip to the real world :) a large handpay is often large tip time, and I daresay very few casino employees are gonna jeopardize that tip stream by getting snitty about proof of taxpayer id! (Remember, no payout means a p*ssed off customer and no tip!)

Big Burning Question: Has anyone here, personally, in the first person, not a FOAF or a cow-orker or whatever, been denied a handpay due to not having the actually US Government-issued Social Security card?

I can't imagine people flying to Vegas from all over the United States and being told they are not going to be paid because they don't have a physical social security card on them. That is complete BS!!!

First of all, casinos have the ability to verify your social security number directly with the government using databases that verify you are giving them the correct info. That is probably why it usually takes a while for you to get your hand pay - everything has to be verified. I have never heard of anyone being asked to produce a social security card for a hand pay. Can you imagine flying 3,000 miles to get to Vegas only to be told you aren't getting your hand pay because you need to produce a physical social security card? It would have been all over these forums long before this thread popped up.

Here is the web page from The Borgata in Atlantic City explaining the verification process for people who sign up for their online gaming site. I Imagine the same type of online database system is used by the casinos to verify the SS# and identity of real life players when they receive an in-person casino hand pay:

If you refer to a multitude of posts above, you will see this is not an issue in Vegas, and almost anywhere else.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, I was. I was at the local Indian casino, won a hand pay and they refused to pay unless I presented my SS Card. All the arguing in the world did me no good. I had to drive home 45 miles, rummage around in my papers to find it and drive back. I have never in my life carried that card with me.
    And you shouldn't.:poke:

Without spending my so valuable time, I am going to go with this answer:

1 person had to show a SS Card at one particular Indian Reservation
118 others had no problems and have never shown a card (many in multiple states)

Believe me, I am not advocating anybody carry around their SS card, but DMR asked if it actually happened to anybody and I just replied.
