Who was right, me or my wife?

My wife and I just returned from a weekend trip to Vegas. We stayed at the Plaza and really enjoyed our first time staying downtown. On Sunday night we had dinner at Oscar's and then we went to the Smith Center to watch Beautiful-The Carole King musical. Dinner and the show were wonderful.

After dinner we boarded the shuttle from the Plaza to the Smith Center. they offer this for free if you have dinner at Oscar's. I thought it was a nice touch. Their shuttle is an extended van with 2 seats up front and then 3 bench seats in the back. My wife and I were the first people to board the shuttle so she followed me to the back row. the second couple got on board and immediately took the first bench seat.

I thought is was polite for us to start filling up the van from the back as it was hard enough getting to the back row in an empty van and it would have been harder to have to climb over people. My wife thought I was being old fashioned and that there was nothing wrong the with first couple on the van taking the best seats.

What do you think? Who is right, me or my wife? If more people side with me I will show this post to my wife and gloat but if most people agree with her I will never mention this again.

 

I would also have chosen to take the rear seats. The world needs less "me first" and more civility, IHMO.

 

I agree with you...it was "polite" to start filling up the van from the back, but I've learned after 34 years of marriage that the "wife", especially on something like this... is ALWAYS right!

my dog always thinks i'm right,
the wife, not so much.

 

The vast majority of people take the first seats. My husband is handicapped with rheumatoid arthritis and we usually have to crawl over people that have jumped into the first seats prior to us boarding. He's used to it and people seeing him having trouble never move for him.

 

You are both right.

Taking the back seats was nice for other people.
Being first means you have best pick.

Spending more than a few minutes on such trivia is the only wrong part.

 

how many more people boarded the shuttle van?
what if the couple in the first bench had trouble getting into the rear bench seats?
so many variables


and why try to argue and beat your wife over something so trivial?

 

My wife will likely be putting that on my tombstone!

I'm of the persuasion that no matter when I board, say, the shuttle bus from the parking lot to the airport, I will give up my seat for women, the aged, families with kids, or anyone who needs an assist. There's no moral imperative in any of this, just manners.

 

probably short sighted but let her have this one. But after a romantic concert and dinner you should have just held her close and planted a big one on her. Then looked her straight in the eyes and said "You're right again and that is why I love you so much!" Win-win.

 

You may have a point for showing your action of what is polite in public but I side w your wife, there is all sorts of acceptable action and there is nothing inherently wrong w the other couples' actions. Other than, what is going on in your own mind.

Basically what your wife is saying , pick your battles and just relax.
Give the benefit of the doubt .. that that couple would have filled to the back if the situation was a dire one (e.g.. a bus picking up people quickly from a bad storm let say)


I find sometimes my mind (kind of like yours) dwells too much on pedantic principle when it isn't needed. I learned to relax bc I have a wife who tells me , like yours, to relax.

I believe as you they are both right. And that spending a few more moments on this is wrong PER SE , however. ...

I applaud a husband who takes this issue (no matter how big or petty to some of us) as an important thing to hash through to learn something for himself and about his wife's perspective and about social philosophies.
He is sincere about it and is a learning point which adds to character. ..
Rather than just brushing her off as wrong and going about life that way.
We all do this to learn and refine our character every day. He just decided to share it w us rather than internalizing it.

We've taken a few shuttles from hotels to casinos at Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods. First people on take the best seats. Just like when you board on Southwest.

To be honest, though, I would have sided with your wife before I even read the first post. If you marry a good one, they're always right.

 

First come, first served. Why should you show up early to get the worst seats? Give up seats for handicapped, or really old.

 

When I board Southwest, I usually go towards the back of the airplane so I don't block people waiting to get by me. I also check baggage so I don't fill up the overhead compartment, and only use it for a small item.

But really, I only go towards the back of the plane because I have to wait for checked baggage anyway. If I didn't check it, I would sit closer to the front.

 

I admire your attitude. My wife and I are always amazed at the coffin size bags people think are carry on.

 

I am single so i can say with confidence that the man is always right. maybe thats why i am single.

You were both right. Normally I take the seat I want when boarding first. But in Vegas, I feel the polite thing to do is to head to the back because there can be a lot of people with mobility issues on any given shuttle.
