Have a trade show coming up at the Sands Convention Center. We want to stay at a nice place within walking distance. We also prefer a smaller hotel / casino. We've done alot of the big ones, and for trade shows it can take 30 minutes just to get in and out of the hotel!

Never stayed at the Cromwell or Westin, but from the looks of these 2 they may fit the bill for a smaller / easier to navigate property. We also would like a decent pool!

What do you guys think? Any other suggestions?

Cromwell is very nice, boutique style property. The pool which is actually Drai's beach club is available to hotel guests for free under certain limited options (usually weekdays and limited hours).
You can however pay dayclub prices (which you will) to get prefer admission and seating. If your not a 20 something, the pool may not be your type of hangout. I like the place, however I was aware of some of its limitations prior to staying there and did my best to avoid them. (nightclub noise in certain rooms, casino full of club people at certain hours, problems with certain club guests in casino).

My guess is you will be there during the week for a trade show which you should not experience the problems I mentioned.

The Westin is, well just a Westin. I think this place was the old Maxim which was bought out of bankruptcy. The rooms were your typical boring but clean Westin style and the property has a tiny casino (think lobby with slot machines and few tables). The property changed hands in 2012 again due to money trouble, so not sure how well it is being kept up. I have not been in the hotel since 2012 when a friend was attending a convention and I was at Ballys. It's about a block from the Cromwell and a short walk via Harrahs / Venetian parking garage secret entrance to Sands Expo.

Unless you are getting a great rate or have hotel rewards I would opt for The Cromwell if you can get a sub $200 a night rate. Make sure you book a strip view room otherwise your view will be a concrete wall.

Cromwell is much better. It will cost more but worth it. IMHO.

I believe they are closing/did close the casino at the Westin.

Actually Harrah's is not that bad since they started remodeling some of the rooms in Carnival Tower. I recently stayed in a renovated Carnival Tower south facing room and it was pretty nice (smaller side but as big as a Cromwell room).
Harrah's is a compact property and since you are going to Sands expo its a short walk to the Venetian garage. Basically you take the Carnival Tower elevator down to casino level, walk out the valet doors toward the tour bus area, cross the street between Harrahs and Venetian parking garage. Enter the V garage, and take the elevator up to shops level, and follow the path to Sands expo. You can literally get from Harrah's front desk into the Venetian shops in 3 minutes.

The only trade off of course is the Harrah's pool is not the best. They have upgraded the pool deck and they have some cabanas but its your basic Holiday Day Inn style pool with drink service. Since you were considering the Westin, I would say the
remodeled Carnival Tower rooms at Harrah's would be an upgrade. Below is a room shot. I liked the room during my stay (it was comped the 4 nights I stayed) but I would be willing to pay 80 to $120 a night if I was on a business trip.

How small are these rooms? The website lists them at 300 sq ft, I'm wondering if that's accurate? That would mean they are even smaller than the Linq rooms.

No I did not have a safe in my room. At the time I was not sure if this was a fluke or a cost saving move. Also I am not sure if you can ask for a room safe to be brought up. In Ballys the room safe is in
one of the drawers. CET may have put these in certain rooms at Harrah's as a cost saving measure. It did not impact me, I kept the laptop and devices in locked luggage and placed in closet.

If I had a large amount of cash, then probably would have requested a safe from front desk.

The rooms are smaller, however the layout and visual representation did not make it feel small, however I had a King bed room. I did not feel like the room was smaller then a Linq standard. It's definitely not a room I would
want to share with say more then one person.

Not sure if they can bring a safe up as it has to be secured to the room to be really safe.
They do have safe deposit boxes available though.
My first stay in Las Vegas was at Harrahs 20+ years ago and no safes in rooms.
As I recall they were near the front desk but that may have changed.
Kept most of my casino cash there and some of wife's jewelry

I just came back from my second stay at Cromwell. I really like the place, small everything easy to find super friendly staff. However while Giada is a great restaurant it is expensive and the only place to eat at Cromwell. If you are a guest at Cromwell and you do not want to buy $48 40 oz margaritas at Drais pool you can use the Pool at Ceasar's palace directly across LV Blvd or go next door to the Flamingo pool. me and my friend as a 50 something couple had a great time on a weekday at Drais pool. They actually treated the old folks special and I think went out of their way to help us out. The dealers are really friendly at Cromwell also.
