    My Trip Report

We got back from a great trip on May 21st and I’ve been wanting to write up a quick trip report ever since but just been too busy…finally getting around to it. I’m going to try to not be too detailed but I know me and this will probably end up being a book.

Some notes… Because of this board and all the information I think I learned while reading everyone’s posts I decided to try something different this trip. I usually just play wherever, whenever and not worry too much about comps or anything like that. But reading about ADT and coin in and daily coin in and all that fun confusing stuff I figured I’d try something different than my norm. I decided to not walk through a casino and throw $20 in a machine then move on to the next as I’ve done consistently over the past 25-30 trips haha I made an effort to try to play more where I was staying. It wasn’t super easy because there are too many places I love to visit while in Vegas, but I did it as much as possible and I guess we’ll see if it makes any difference.

We were in Vegas for 6 nights…some say that is long, but I say not long enough…especially this time of year when lounging by the pool all day is an option. We got in late on May 15th and came home on the 21st. Trying to figure out the best way to get rooms etc for cheapest we ended up staying at 3 different places. TI for 2 nights comp, Cosmo for 2 nights comp, and Aria for 3 nights (2 comp via MyVegas). Yes, before you take your calculator out, that does add up to 7 nights… Monday we were double booked because I couldn’t book TI for only 1 night comp, had to be 2 (this was the first time I’ve ever had 2 rooms booked for the same night…and I have to admit…I felt a little guilty…like I was stealing or something. Oh well, I‘ll survive, I think). This actually worked out pretty good as it saved us from checking out early the next morning and we got to hang by the pool for a good chunk of the day. I don’t mind changing hotels and usually do at least once a trip, as I usually go for 5-7 nights and changing hotels breaks things up, but I found moving twice a little annoying this trip.

Got to Vegas around 11:00pm Sunday and shuttled over to Rental facility to pick up the car. I always rent a car and usually find a deal for about $100-$120 for the week, everything included, but this week I couldn’t find anything at that level and ended up paying $177. Funny thing is that I used the car the least amount ever on a trip so I was double annoyed with this as it cost more and I used it less haha I had very loose plans to go for a ride out to Laughlin to check that out as well as the 7 Magic Mountains…but neither panned out. Oh well…something to shoot for next time!

Checked in to TI and got a room on a higher floor (can’t remember which) but it had a great Strip view!

    Vegas - View from TI.jpg

Went down to play some slots and have some drinks…I like blackjack, but my gf isn’t a gambler so I play more slots with her as it’s something we can do together as opposed to her watching me play at the tables. With the time change (coming from East) it’s already late but we manage to stay up until about 3am Vegas time (6am home time). I’m pretty sure I lost about $300 or so, couple of not bad hits but I put it all back in the excitement of being in Vegas!

Next morning up early and down to the pool...

    Vegas - TI Pool.jpg

As mentioned we spent a good chunk of the day there lounging and having a few drinks. We went up to the room mid-afternoon, cleaned up and took a quick power nap then headed over to Maggiano’s for dinner. I love that place and go at least once every trip. Mom’s Lasagna was great as usual. We hadn’t eaten anything at all in about 30 hours so the food didn’t stay on our plates long haha

After dinner we went back to TI and played some slots (no big hits) before heading up to the room and getting our things together for the move over to the Cosmo. Grabbed the rental and cruised down the Strip, which is always nice to do, especially at night (it was about 9pm).

Valet the car at Cosmo and head to check in… I asked about a room overlooking the fountains and they said they had one that was an upgrade, bigger room etc, for a fee. I took it. And it was a great decision to do so! Our room was on the 47th floor overlooking the heart of the Strip! What a view! The fact that we had a huge terrace was even more awesome! Loved that! The room itself was really nice and had 2 full bathrooms…I looked for the room on their website after the fact and it isn’t listed so I’m not sure what to call it…

    Vegas - Cosmo View Day.jpg

    Vegas - Cosmo View Night.jpg

After hangin’ in the room for a bit (mostly on the terrace with our jaws on the floor taking in the view) we went down to play some slots. We played for a short while but my gf wasn’t feeling well so we went back up to the room. Once she was settled I went down to hit the tables. I got on a blackjack table but I honestly can’t remember if it was 2 deck or 6 (I think 6). $25, stick on s17, BJ pays 3:2. Probably played for about 3 hours ranging from $25-$50 hand and about half that time playing 2 spots. I can’t really remember many details as I was pounding the vodka cranberry’s pretty good. This is the thing I really love, when you get on a table where you can play for awhile without getting kicked in the nuts and you can just enjoy the game and the socializing with the dealer and other players. It was good! I don’t even remember coloring up my chips lol My gf came down and found me at the table at about 2am (so I'm told) so I finished up my bj session and we played a few slots before heading upstairs. When I woke up I seen the chips on the counter (I sat down at the bj table with $400 and woke up in the morning with $1200) and literally asked her what happened haha Good times!

Loved waking up to this view while getting ready to head out...

Tuesday morning we were hoping to go to the pool but the weather wasn’t the best. Overcast. So, we ended up going to the Palazzo to grab a bite at Grand Lux (which I do at least once a trip) then we went over to Wynn. Played a Ghostbusters machine for about 2 hours on $100 ($3 spin) and cashed out about $130. We had it up over $300 but the bonus was hitting often and we were having a good time so we kept playing. After this we went to Fashion Show Mall to do some looking around. A couple hours killed there then we went over to TI and played some slots before grabbing the car at Palazzo and heading back to Cosmo.

The plan for the night was to go downtown and eat at Binion’s Steakhouse and attempt to do the zipline without urinating on anyone. Our friends picked us up at the Cosmo around 8:30pm and we went downtown. Binions was good, but not great. We each had a steak (rib-eye, strip lion, tenderloin) and one person had the enormous prime rib (which was impossible for one human being to eat in one sitting, literally). The bill was about $300 with tip for the four of us. I’m glad we went to experience this place, but we probably won’t be back.

    Vegas - Binions.jpg

Following dinner we just walked around and played a few slots in a few different places downtown. When we got down into the casino from the steakhouse I threw a hundred in a $1 WoF ($5 per spin) and quickly got it up to $500. I think I cashed it out at $350 or $400 so that paid for dinner and then some! Good stuff! We hit Golden Nugget, 4 Queens, the D, on our way to El Cortez. My friend had been talking about wanting to visit ElCo for months so I had to take him. He kept saying “loosest sluts in town, loosest sluts in town”. We hung out there for about an hour playing a few slots. I didn’t hit anything but my friend hit 1000 on the bonus wheel on WoF. It was a 0.25 machine. Following this we just went back to Cosmo and crashed for the night, it was a little past 1am. I did discover the $1 Monopoly game at ElCo which I ended up throwing a few dollars in at various places over the next few days.

Up and got in some quality pool time on Wednesday morning…

    Vegas - Cosmo Pool.jpg

We would have stayed longer but unfortunately we were checking out of our awesome room at Cosmo and best view in Vegas to head over to Aria for the next 3 nights. After check-out we went to Stripburger across from Wynn for a couple burgers. They were as good as always. A drive out to Wal-Mart to grab a few things before heading to Aria to get checked-in and settled for our final 3 nights of this trip. Check-in line was ginormously huge but I managed to get into the invited guests line (nobody there) and things went quick. Up to our room on the 24th floor and got settled before heading down to take a beating in the casino. I find the slots at Aria to be hit and miss…with more miss than hit, if you know what I mean. Some days I can get a decent amount of play out of them but most days it’s a constant kick in the nut sack.

We planned on going to ‘O’ at Bellagio that night but the concierge told us they were basically sold out…they didn’t have 4 tickets together, and the 2 they did have together were ‘obstructed view’ which we were advised to avoid. So we booked tickets to the Thursday night show at 9:30pm instead. Our friends were taking off Thursday morning so they missed out on the sh’O’w, but they did see Mystere at TI on Wednesday night which they enjoyed.

So with no show to go to we ended up taking a walk down the Strip casino hopping. Up until this point, if you haven’t noticed, I basically avoided doing this, which was hard because it is something I love to do. I was trying to stick to the “play where you stay” plan and think about ADT, daily coin-in, and whatever else before throwing money in machines. But, the plan was to hit up Caesars properties which I’m indifferent to so I didn’t really mind doing this that night.

    Vegas - Strip.jpg

We walked over to P-Ho, strolled through the casino and got nothing in a $1 Wof ($5/spin) so we headed down to the Cromwell where we played some slots and actually for the first time ever a bar-top VP machine. After basically paying $20 for a glass of house white wine I felt like blackjack. So I checked out the tables and found that they had a $25 2-deck pitch game that I really like and can only seem find at Flamingo. Pays 3-2 but hit s17. Not the best rules but Cromwell and Flamingo seem to be the only 2 places I see this at anymore. I think I seen a table at Golden Nugget downtown a couple trips back but not sure if they still have it. Anyhow, I played that for about an hour or so and lost $300 so it was time to move over to said Flamingo and try their $25 2-deck blackjack pitch game. Cashed in for $300 but left shortly after losing $100 of that as the players were newbies and didn’t really know what the hell they were doing. I didn’t say anything, just left. No biggie, everyone’s gotta learn somehow. In fact, the two women playing at Cromwell didn’t follow strategy either. It was annoying but what am I supposed to do? Don’t people know how to play anymore? Or even care to learn how to play? No wonder casino’s are getting away with offering shitty rules etc. lol

Slightly annoyed I threw some money in a $1 Re-Spin slot and played that for awhile but basically broke even. So I took the TITO and found a $1 WoF machine ($2/spin) and ended up cashing about $500 out of that one. Surprisingly I hit a couple of $160 or so payouts on the reels and in the few bonus Spins I got (which were mostly low as usual) I hit one for $200-$250, which was nice, and well deserved ;)

I honestly don’t know where the time went but it was after midnight at this point and we were hungry, so we headed over to Cabo Wabo outside of P-Ho for some food. The gf loves their nachos so we had that and I had my first JimmyChanga (or whatever it’s called). It was pretty good!

    Vegas - CaboWabo.jpg

After food we were both kind of tipsy as we had been drinking the whole night including a couple of Tequila shots at Cabo Wabo along with some gross Tecate beer, and I’m not sure what we did. I think we settled into a food coma and just made the trek back to Aria and went up to bed... Who knows...

Thursday morning up and down to the pool. Beautiful sunny day…hot, but not mid-July hot. Just perfect to be lounging by the pool. Spent a few hours having a few drinks and catching some rays…I love the pool :)

Half pie-eyed we head up to the room sometime in the afternoon and have a quick power nap before getting cleaned up and heading out for the rest of the day. The plan was to grab a bite to eat at Carnegie Deli in the Mirage then possibly head downtown to not urinate while riding the zipline. Self-parked at Mirage, went in and had an awesome BLT using a 2 for 1 my Vegas coupon (which is actually $25 off) so our bill for a BLT and a bacon cheeseburger was $6 (win).

    Vegas - Carnagie BLT.jpg

Following food the gf says she’s not overly interested in going downtown to not urinate while riding the zipline so we decide to take a stroll through the casino and play some slots. That was a damn good decision as I ended up finding a machine that I absolutely loved… and absolutely hated lol

Return of the Sphinx (or Return of the Sphincter when it was being an ass). What an unbelievable run of luck we had on this machine. At one point we hit the minor green jackpot ($50) 3 times in a row. Like, 3 times back to back to back. I literally questioned whether or not it was broken haha I had never seen this machine before, let alone played it, so I had no clue how it worked. I had a TITO for about $60 so I put it in. This machine was the $1 version, $5 a spin. A couple spins in and we get the bonus symbol on the 4th reel. We were excited to see what the bonus game was but anybody who’s played this knows there is no bonus game. What happens is it reveals an amount of credits won in a box at the top part of the machine. After hitting the bonus symbol a few times I understood how the game worked and what was happening. Basically there is a pyramid of boxes at the top of the machine and every time you hit the bonus symbol the next box reveals the amount of credits you won. There is a total of 15 boxes and the higher you go the more you win in each box. The catch is that if you run out of credits or cash out you lose all the progress you made in the pyramid and have to start over. I found this out after a short while when the machine told me I needed to put more money in haha So, the nice guy that I am put in another $100 and kept on rolling.

We literally played this machine for over 3 hours straight, non-stop, without putting another dollar in the machine. We filled up the pyramid twice, with the top prize being $750 the first time and $400 the second time and we got some nice hits sporadically on the regular paylines ($120 up to $480).

    Vegas - Sphinx1.jpg Vegas - Sphinx2.jpg

Being a newbie and having no strategy I just kept on playing and never cashed out. At the peak we had over $2700 in the machine. At this point we were only 1 square away from the top bonus prize…next one and we got it for the third time! This is gonna be sooo good!! … Can you guess what happens next?? Of course you can…the machine gets tighter than a Mothe$#@*^%! and will not give it up. I figured it had to at some point but it just wouldn’t! I’m a little embarrassed to say that I ended up cashing out at $1500 without hitting that damn last bonus symbol L By this time it was after 8pm and we had to get back to the hotel to get ready for “O” at Bellagio at 9:30pm. I think it was a blessing as I probably would have pumped the whole $2700 back into that damn machine trying to get that last bonus symbol. Well, maybe not, but I would have been soooo tempted to keep trying for it.

How can this machine even exist? I don’t get how they could make a machine that is supposed to be “random” have a game that you have to keep playing to get the bigger prizes. And it seems so fixed…we had been getting the bonus symbols regularly but of course as we are only needing one last symbol for the ‘big’ prize it just refuses to give it to us. I had a feeling that this would happen at some point and sure enough it did. I was pissed and hated this machine after this. But deep down I still loved it…

So we cabbed it back to Aria because during all that excitement with the Sphincter I had a few wobbly pops and may have been a little ‘happy’, so the rental spent the night in the Mirage parking garage. Back at Aria we got cleaned up and walked over to Bellagio for the show.

What a great show! Tickets were fac%*n expensive but worth it…well I’m not sure if anything is worth that much…but whatever. It was good, we both loved it and would go see it again if I ever win the lottery.

Following the show I put $100 in a Monopoly slot ($1, $5 spin) at Bellagio and hit the bonus for a hundred and some. Ended up cashing out at $150 which gave us enough money for some more nachos and JimmyChanga (or whatever it’s called) at Cabo Waba again for the second night in a row. Filled with gas inducing Mexican food we proceeded back to the room (with a quick pit stop at Cosmo for a $100 deposit into one of their slot machines) where I gave the gf the dutch oven all night long (poor girl) ;)

I was up pretty early Friday morning…like 6am-ish…not sure why but I was. So, I got out of bed and made a more respectable version of the walk of shame over to the Mirage to pick up the rental and take it back to Aria. I don’t think I have ever been out at this hour of the morning…it’s like a different Las Vegas Strip. I found it nice and peaceful on the Strip. I walked through the Bellagio and I have never seen it so quiet...

    Mirage...

    Vegas - Mirage Casino.jpg

Back at Aria we were both excited to hit the pool but the weather wasn’t the greatest. Overcast and not super hot, and super windy. So, no pool this morning :( Before we took off for the day I called and reserved a 10pm night flight over Vegas through Maverick Helicopters (had a MyVegas for $85 per ticket).

The plan for today was walk down to Mandalay Bay while having some drinks and playing in each casino. Before leaving Aria we ate at the buffet which was pretty good (used 1 free via MyVegas and the other Express comp). Walked through Monte Carlo with no luck, then walked down “The Park” to the big-ass woman statue which was bigger than I had imagined...

Vegas - Jason Lady in Park.jpg

Went into NYNY where we once again had no luck. Over to Excalibur I found a Sphinx/Sphincter machine which was a sphincter and sucked up my $100 before I could even sit down. Made the indoor trek to Luxor and quickly played a $1 Wof and a newer 3D Sphinx game which paid nothing so I didn’t like it.

Headed over towards Mandalay Bay where we seen Pete Rose signing autographs in one of the shops in Mandalay Place. We went in to check it out but he wanted too much. I was hoping to get one of his books signed but they wanted $99. Screw it.

    Vegas - Pete Rose.jpg

In Mandalay Bay we walked around playing a few slots hitting nothing here either so I decided to play some blackjack. $25 2-deck game with decent rules, I started with $400 and colored up $800 after playing for about an hour. We got 2 free ‘Shark Reef’ tickets (via MyVegas) and went to check that out. We were unimpressed by this but it was an ok way to spend 30-45 minutes and I get to scratch that off my list, never to return.

    Vegas - StarFish.jpg

At this point we had a plan to go back to Aria and spend a couple hours at the pool. We took the ‘express’ tram back to Excalibur and as we were walking over the walkway to NYNY we decided that it wasn’t nice enough outside to go to the pool. So our plans got adjusted and we went to MGM Grand. We played a few slots then found the $0.25 version of Sphinx/Sphincter and played that for awhile. We didn’t get the pyramid filled this time but the lady on the machine next to us got caught in the Sphincter trap on her machine and put in well over $200 trying to get that last bonus to show up. I’m not sure how that ended as we moved, but about 45 minutes later I walked by and she was still at the machine. Hope she didn’t get karate chopped for too much.

At some point we got hungry so we grabbed some sushi etc at the Grand Wok and Sushi Bar. Food was pretty good here and hit the spot. After making a food baby we went back to Aria for a power nap and to get cleaned up for our flight over the Strip. We got picked up at the hotel and shuttled to the Maverick shop just out past Mandalay Bay by a unique shuttle bus driver. The helicopter ride was pretty awesome! Definitely a great way to experience the Strip at night. Beautiful!

    Vegas - Maverick Pilot.jpg

Following this exciting experience we convinced the shuttle driver to bend the rules and drop us off at the Mirage instead of Aria. It was our last night in Vegas so I had to go visit the machine I developed my love/hate relationship with one last time before we left. There it was sitting quietly, patiently waiting for me to come over and allow it to give me some love. I put $10 in the machine and used $100 of pointplay to get the machine going. It didn’t take long and we were hitting the bonuses and filling up the pyramid once again…we got the machine up to over $600 in credits and made it to the last bonus at the top of the pyramid again…and guess what happened?? Tighter than a Mothe$#@*^%! AGAIN! Son of a… seriously?!?! Yuppers. The Sphincter swallowed up the whole $600+ and I was foaming at the mouth (a la Clark Griswold) as I put in about $400 more on top of that! Fa*%! Did it hit? Nope. Stupid Sphincter.

Pissed off I left the machine and went to find a blackjack table. Found a $50 2-deck game with good rules and played for awhile. There were these 2 guys playing and they were pretty drunk, but happy calm drunk so it was good. The one guy was playing a few hundred a hand and getting the dealer in the game for $50-$100 a hand. Yes, he was basically tipping $100-$200 per hand! Have you ever seen this? I haven’t! Anyhow, of course there is a host at the table in short order giving them her card and telling them to call if they need anything. They ended up quitting after a short while with the big tipper blowing through a few grand and the other guy coloring up a bit. I played at the table alone for awhile getting my junk kicked so I started playing two spots at $100 each and one decent shoe later I colored up at $1000. I had started with $500 so I basically got the money back that the damn Sphincter sucked outta me.

By this time it was getting late and we were a little hungry for a snack. We ended up at White Castle across the street and it is something I will never experience again. Do people really think this is good??

Cabbed it back to Aria with the plan to play some blackjack before bed as it was my last night in Vegas and I wasn’t extremely tired…but I ended up just staying in the room and crashing. What a pitiful ending haha

The next morning we got up and got our things together to catch our flight which was leaving at noon. I toyed with the thought of getting up a bit early and going down to the casino for an hour but decided against it as I probably would have just plowed through a bunch of cash quickly instead of enjoying what I was doing. But, I may have hit a jackpot. Nah, that wouldn’t have happened.

Check out was easy, grabbed the rental, stopped at the “Welcome” sign to snap a few pics, dropped the rental off, shuttle to airport, drop luggage, then got punched in the face by the biggest damn line at security I have ever seen. We were already cutting things a little close as we were only an hour out from take-off and this line wasn’t going anywhere fast. I tried talking to security etc about being stuck halfway through this line and our boarding time being 5 minutes ago, but they offered no help or solution. We eventually made it through (we asked to cut in front of a few people and they were cool with it, so thank you to whoever you were!) and literally ran to our gate, which was a tram ride away as well as located in the furthest possible point from where we were. Our boarding time was 11:30am and take-off was 12:10pm. We got there a couple minutes past noon, positive that we missed our flight, but found that they were delayed by about half an hour so we made it.

To be honest, I small part of me (ok, a decent sized part of me) was ok (or hoping) that we missed our flight… there’s another flight at midnight which would have meant another day in paradise…oh well, there’s always next time.

Can't go to Vegas without seeing this guy somewhere...

How’s that for a “quick trip report”? Writing this on and off for 5 days and it’s done! I don’t keep details of how much I spend etc, but I figure I spent about $2k gambling. Not bad. That is about $7k in Canadian funds haha The trip went by quick and I could have easily stayed for another day or two. I’ve been to Vegas about 30 times and every time I am sad to leave. I don’t think that is normal. Anyhow, I’m hoping to get back to Vegas in late August! Until then…

Awesome TR JR! Too bad you couldn't stay another day and tackle the Sphincter one more time!
    Nice way to do Vegas!

Very detailed and fun report to read! Thanks for sharing and you did the right thing the morning of your return flight. So many times I should have stayed in my room but didn't listen and it's always when I lose $1,000's in less than 2 hours. Every single time. I'm staying in my room next trip. Lol

Awesome report, enjoyed reading it! For what it's worth, I hate/love the bitch known as Spinhx as much as you. Literally the exact same one at the Mirage.

But have no fear, I'll teach her a lesson in August. :)

Not if I get there first, Kolmeseiska! Headed out there late July - of course I have a strategy - she'll be a much different gal by the time you get there.

That was a great report! Great pictures! I may have to give that Sphinx machine a try and test my luck on it as well. 2-deck blackjack eh? I've never tried that before, I might have to give it a go as well.

Great report and I think it is definitely "normal" to be sad to leave. I often feel that way, even when it's a losing trip and I've been there 8 or 9 days! Thanks for taking the time to write.

Well organized. Well written. Well illustrated. One of the best reports I have ever read.

Wonderful trip report and great photos as well! You certainly did the city justice and did a lot of different things and had a lot of gaming time! I loved reading this, thank you!

Great pics. At Cosmo, I think you had the elusive "Terrace Angle Suite", they're located in the West Tower where the building shape bends.

A Terrace Suite has two bathrooms, but they don't have the soaking tub next to the window that's in one of your pics.
A Terrace One Bedroom has the soaking tub, but not two bathrooms.

Hilarious report "sh'O'w" (I see what you did there), Sphincter, dutch oven - had me laughing out loud. Great pictures, too!

Thanks for the kind words!! I'm happy everyone enjoyed reading about the trip! I didn't mind writing the report at all, enjoyed it actually, as it allows me to re-live the vacation and gives me something that I can look back on in the future!

I've done the same in the past haha It was sooo tempting to head down...but I know I would have been throwing money away...at least that's what I tell myself whenever the thought of regret for not going down crosses my mind haha
