You know more about this than I do, but as I've changed computers for both work and home, it feels like processors are generally fast enough even if you don't get the absolute fastest one, but faster RAM makes the whole machine work so much faster. It just seems like processors are fast enough now that they don't have as much impact as really blazing fast memory does.

It's not so much the speed of the RAM, but the capacity. More RAM means less swapping to disk, which means better performance. Unless you were running below maximum bus speed before, the RAM isn't running any faster now.

You had issues with 16gb or ram? What are you trying to process there? A 4k video?

Lol, this makes me remember trying to overclock a 133 CPU to 166 and how great going from a 28k to a 56k modem was.

You can never be too rich, too thin, or have too much RAM.

US Embassy Vienna, '85: "OK, basically we have two circuits. The 300 baud circuit - for FBIS - and the high speed circuit, the 1200 baud - for us, on this rack".
US Consulate Leningrad , '86 & Consulate Casablanca, '88: "How long do we have to deal with this 75 baud speed? This is primitive." & "Well, this fall we're getting new equipment from Wang and changing the crypto gear. Probably...300 baud all said and done."

    I know slow.

Do you have your OS on a SSD? The SSD is much faster than a conventional HD and made a huge speed improvement on my PC.

LOL! Both of these really take me back. One of my favorite things to say back at my old days at Teledyne Microwave was "Hey! Keep your hands off my Wang!" And I forgot all about the Sneakernet.

My fiance back in the day was a SysAdmin who had a consulting business on the side. I remember going in one weekend to help him with a Windows upgrade. My job was to walk from machine to machine and switch out the 12 floppy disks that Windows came on, as he did the upgrades. I would start one, and when it was ready for disk 2, I'd take disk 1 to the next machine, etc. It took forever!!

I also remember when we got our first 1200 baud internal modem and how fast it seemed, compared to the 300 baud phone coupler we had been using. :kill: For you kids these days, who don't remember, you used to dial the number on your home phone and attach the handset to a box and it would squeak and squeal your data over the line. Oh, how far we have come.

You've upgraded a 7 year old computer from 16Gb to 32Gb? I can assure you that the 16Gb of ram wasn't the bottleneck in that old of a machine. You'd be better served saving that money for a new machine.

Well with a Samsung pro 850 SSD and i7 cpu...if I could solder on a new GPU, then I'd be really set.

Yes we are. I built my first PC in 1981. It was a Heathkit H89 with 48K (K, not M, or G) of RAM. It had an 8080 CPU and a 5 1-4" floppy. My first upgrade was to add 16K or RAM, and the upgrade cost over $100
