Great scoop by Vital Vegas. It's fascinating news.

I'm going to think about this.....

I replied to the article via Twitter that I am not sure how I feel about it, while those were grind joints they provided character to downtown. Never been to the strip club though as I heard it was more of a ripoff joint.

Also concerned about Stevens becoming too big down there, less competition is never good. Especially if the new place is just a carbon copy of his other two casinos.

Getting rid of La Bayou and Mermaids is nothing but good. I've always thought those places are nothing but cheaply-done grind joints and their real estate could be put to MUCH better use.

I haven't set foot in Glitter Gulch since the mid 90's and I've never had any intention of spending another dollar in the place so I can't shed too many tears over it, but it was my very first strip club experience in Las Vegas so it's a bit of a bummer to see it get shuttered. The old LVC will undoubtedly be expanded into GG's and Mermaid's spaces.

Darkening 4 Fremont locations at once is going to create a lot of empty holes on the FSE for a long time, followed by a lot of annoying construction dust...but I guess that's been the cycle of life in Las Vegas since the late 80's. Build, destroy, rebuild. I just hope the finished product of the LVC/GG/Mermaids merger is a quality destination that offers good room, gaming and food values. #yeahright

Maybe they'll go retro and re-open The Mint. We can dream....

The article says they are closing in 60 days, which means I have time to set foot in them one last time!

I'll be there in less than 60 days. I don't visit them but like the bright lights.

What's the 4th place that would be dark?

I love the idea of a GG expansion.... With that being said, losing seedy joints like Mermaids isn't good at all. Downtown is quickly becoming rowhouses of mid-tier casino properties. I don't like that one bit. The nostalgia and grittiness of 10 years ago is quickly disappearing. Character is good, and downtown is losing it.

    This worries me too.
I had better enjoy my downtown while I can...it is changing fast!

You'd better believe I'll be making a final visit during our upcoming one night stay downtown!! Just for nostalgia sake.

    Bummer!

I was never a fan of La Bayou, but I'll sorely miss Mermaids. Gotta love their impeccable drink service and the cafeteria with $1 frozen chocolate bananas. I really hope that Derek keeps those aspects alive in whatever form they're reincarnated as.

I'll be curious to see what Derek does with them. I agree with many posters that the casinos themselves were dives, but I too liked the grittiness of them. Downtown will definitely be losing some character when they're shuttered.

I'm feeling very fortunate that I have a flight booked in two weeks. I'll be sure to give them a farewell, takes some photos, and get one (or five) last frozen banana!

Downtown is like a carnival... and I don't wanna see that leave. Places like this kinda added to it.

Absolutely agreed. I'm concerned to see two of the most distinctive places downtown getting bought up. I like the D/GG's dancing dealers as much as the next red blooded American guy, but there was definitely some charm in the grittiness of Mermaid's that will be missed.

I can already feel some sad nostalgia for the good ol' days of Downtown. I'm only 22, I'm too young for this damn it!

I stay downtown all the time and never go into any of those places. Maybe once in a while for fries or something but i could do without them so no loss.

I like Derek and trust him to no over fancify the places to make them too strip like. he didnt do that with the d or golden gate, just made them better all around yet still a great affordable deal. yeah yeah, resort fees, get over it, he wasnt the first.

Cant imagine he will put a high dollar place in that prices out his bread and butter customers.

I was Downtown last week and stayed at The D and thought it was good, I also like Golden Gate so I suppose I'm a bit of a fan as to what Stevens have done so far Downtown. I actually did have a walk around Mermaids last week. I have never been in La Bayou or Glitter Gulch. Maybe I should make a point of visiting them on the next visit lol.

I will reserve judgment on this until I see what Stevens will be planning to do with the properties. I'm wondering if the 4th property is the building behind mermaids which currently houses the management offices of those places (also used to be a pawn shop many years ago). If so then Stevens will own the whole block from main street up to 1st st so he can develop the whole block any way he wants.

Yes, GG does look small so picking up La Bayou will allow them to expand their hotel casino and possibly build another hotel addition. But then they have to get the permits to get rid of 1st street (south of the FSE) to allow them to combine with La Bayou but a portion of that alley/street is already built up with something so shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I'm a little reluctant on this move, I'm not a fan of the D's loud music so I hardly play there so if they created more of this with the GG and the LVC it won't give me much incentive to visit those places.

Too bad, I never had a deep fried twinkie or a deep fried oreo and probably won't be back in the next 2 months so will never experience one from them. It's been years since I last visited Glitter Gulch (was a rip off) so I probably won't miss those places that much.

    Mermaids, LaBayou, Glitter Gulch closing

And we lose yet another couple fun, little downtown joints.

Much like the fall of the Western, many people who like the filth and excitement of Mermaids and LaBayou will be sad after their closing in June.

    Loved those little joints.

Going to be sad to see them go.

I'm going to miss the cafe at Mermaid's.

Can't beat a $1 frozen chocolate banana! Luckily I've got a trip booked for May. I might have to give a deep fried Oreo or Twinkie a try just because.

And there's the infamous drink service as well!

    Any word on why?

Never been much of a slot guy, but it was always fun to stop in a play for a bit.
