Wish I could convince my husband to stay downtown. It seems the strip is getting worse all the time. Of course we -- becoming the old fogies, are usually tucked in our beds by midnight.

Crime happens in every city. I feel just as safe in Vegas as I do in Chicago or any other city. Be aware of your surroundings and things will be ok. Because of the 24 hour news cycle and social media incidents like these seem to be worse than they are. I do feel sorry for the families of the victims but just be aware and continue to have fun.

Really doubt the crimes level on the strip vs downtown is much different.

This is why I almost always do my gambling in the daytime and go to bed at night. On our next trip, we have tickets for Matt Goss, so we're going to stay out until 11:30. Then, we are heading back to our room and going to sleep. After midnight is when you usually have to worry about thieves and other criminals.

When I started going to Vegas in 1992, I never gave a second thought to walking the Strip at all hours of the night. About 10 years ago, I noticed a change after midnight; more violent drunks and pimps walking around. Because of that ( and I am older and wiser), I am in my hotel by 10 pm. Crime rates in Vegas are probably the same as in Dallas, but I am positive it used to be much lower.

Some old-timers told me there was no crime on the Strip when the Mob ran things; maybe that is the solution!

    This.

Crimes (and murders) happen in places where a lot of people are. And Las Vegas strip has a pretty huge amount of people any given day of the year so stuff like this is bound to happen every now and then. If I remember right, there's around 50 murders taking place every single day in the US but you probably aren't scared all the time? Had this happened in some place else, chances are there wouldn't be story about it online.

That being said, this is awful and my thoughts are with the families affected. Truly tragical. But you shouldn't really feel uncomfortable in Vegas, my intuition tells me that the strip is one of the safest places I've ever visited.

Still not clear exactly why this happened! And appears to have happened another time recently as well.

An early morning car-to-car shooting on the Las Vegas Strip that began as a scuffle in a parking lot has left two women dead and a man critically injured.

Surveillance video from the Miracle Mile Shops parking lot showed the melee, which was broken up by security guards, Las Vegas police Lt. Dan McGrath said. The video also shows a man with a gun get into a 2015 Toyota Camry moments later.

Crime happens everywhere unfortunately. I think Vegas crime bothers me because I like to think of Vegas as my getaway from reality. It funny how I feel safer there while walking with a pocket full of money than I do at home. Then again, Vegas is the only place where I will carry lots of cash.

I hope the police solve this case and can take steps to prevent more of the same. March madness will be wild enough without having to duck bullets.

Crime does happen everywhere, but I'm not sure that is the real point here. If you have been going to Las Vegas for any length of time, you never used to even CONSIDER that you might get robbed, or end up hurt/dead. The gangbangers simply weren't a part of the fabric.

You never had to worry about getting caught in the crossfire, and now........even though it might seem a remote risk, it's getting more prominent every day it seems. Let's face it, 15 years ago, we would all be shocked to have read about this exchange. I'll guarantee none of you were shocked about this today.

Pure speculation on my part, but I suspect it'll ultimately turn out to be some sort of pimp & ho dispute. They no longer lurk in the shadows.

Vegas is a huge metropolitan place with gobs of marginalized people, free-flowing money, hordes of unsuspecting tourists and a popular (but silly) marketing mantra that anything goes. People need to remove their blinkers. Yes, it is a happy fun land where we frolic and carry about in our mirthsome ways, but why should it be any different than LA or Honolulu or Philly?

I read on this board that if you leave the Fremont canopy, you will likely get mugged, raped or killed. May want to stick with the strip.

Every time this topic comes up it becomes a discussion of "crime happens everywhere", which is indeed true. The issue as others have said is this is a vacation place where folks tend to over imbibe and let their guard down. I have met tourists who just assume that everyone is a tourist which is of course untrue and don't understand the economics of touristy city and the "have nots" who prey on the "haves". Crime happens everywhere and I maintain my same policy everywhere, I am off the streets late at night and if I am intoxicated I prefer to be in relatively safe confines of my hotel where I am only an elevator ride from my room.

Everything is same until its not...... I don't my any measure consider LV unsafe but I also just don't have much desire to be out late so it works for me. I am an early riser and a day drinker which has its advantages as far as staying out of trouble.

Now 10 years ago I saw the sun come up each and every morning as I made way back to my room from one of the various clubs, just past that stage in life.

It all comes down to playing odds and reducing your exposure to risk. :peace:

    Cheers!

This occurrence will have no effect on me when I am in Vegas. I will still be doing an going to the same places on the strip, late night or whatever or whenever. Everybody has their preferences but no way in hell will I be going to bed by midnight. But to each there own. If I ever find myself thinking Vegas is not safe enough that I have to be in bed by a certain time, that is the point that I will not be going to Vegas anymore. IMHO.

If I am on vacation and not drinking coffee somewhere by 730am that is because I am dead. I too rarely see midnight anymore.
