The Most Downtrodden Room To Book On The Strp

I am contemplating turning the clock back to 1992 when a svelte, ambitious tdhoier would save up $300, jump in the Ford Tempo and leave Ft Collins, CO on Spring Break with a group of buddies to the land of Las Vegas.

Those rooms were $19 (and not much more to this day, for good reason). You put four hooligans in one of those 300 square foot beauties and we're talkin about $20 apiece for a four night rendezvous.

Amazing how I thought I was a big shot with $300 entering the city limits back then. I can barely get to the hotel from McCarran now without dropping that much.

Anywho, I was thinking maybe just staying at the lowest rent - dump-dive hotel room(s) this next trek in early June. I mean, I basically won't stay in anything that isn't a suite these days because I can't spend 15 hours in casinos/sports books any more. I like a space where I can kick back, entertain, listen to the Circle Jerks...you know, what just about everyone else does.

But maybe if I went back to the old way of thinking for one trip, I could spend more time in the high limit rooms and spend more than $65 on a woman of the night.


Where and what room type would be the worst place to stay on the Strip? There used to be an awesome motel directly across the street from the Treasure Island 12-13 years ago. Found dead, dried up moths on the toilet, in the bathtub and on the bedding...and I once found $400 in a ziplock baggie in the crapper at the Motel 6 on Tropicana...but please help with some suggestions.

The only thing I can think of is the Circus Circus. There's no way they could charge more than $20 for a room there. No chance.

A tad off-strip but the disgusting bed bug infestation video I saw on YouTube a while back for Hooters creeped me out so much, I wouldn't even walk into the casino let alone one of their rooms. There were bed bugs crawling all over the bed. No way housekeeping could have missed that. The decor was really old so guessing it has been a very long tome sin e rooms were re-done. Next up I would guess are Circus Circus and Excalibur from what I have read. I have never stayed at CC and haven't stayed at Excalibur since it was new. The dumpiest room I've been in was at Paris.

I've stayed in many crappy strip rooms over the years but most are gone. Westward Ho garden room, Stardust (I liked the place but the room I stayed in was very dumpy), Riv, Marina, Vegas World, Sahara, Hacienda, El Rancho. First place I ever stayed was Holiday Inn (now Harrah's). That was dumpy. And while I don't care for the current Harrah's I wouldn't call it dumpy anymore. .

 

I'm more curious what kind of lady of the night you can get for $65.

 

On the strip: Excalibur for sure has that "worn down" feel... but more so in a "this was thrown together in 1990 when more properties popped up in Las Vegas to be competitive once Atlantic City started catching on and nobody who worked here since then knows what the word 'renovation' means" sort of sense.

On Fremont: El Cortez. There's a tipping point between "old" and "vintage", I think. "Old" is where something should be much better according to current standards (in a parallel sense, think about the original iPhone compared to today's iPhones), whereas "vintage" is so old to the point that it's actually kind of endearing as to how something has managed to stay un-updated for this period of time, to the point that it overwhelms any negativity you might feel towards the oldness. Of these two, Cortez is "vintage". I seriously felt like I was in the 1960's when I was staying in that room.

I second Hostel Cat. That's the dumpiest Strip room I can think of

 

Circus Circus and Excalibur aren't "nice" by any means, but they're far from the dumpiest rooms you can find. One needs to aim much lower (this Hostel Cat sounds/looks promising).

 

I think dumpiest 'should' correlate with the cheapest....but if I had to pick between the two, dumpiest wins.

I am very intrigued with this Hostel Cat. It seems like a dream.

I agree el Cortez is vintage all they way, "pavilion" is motel like and vintage is just that, it would be neat to see the old suites though

 

Hooters, right across from mgm so if you squint hard enough you basically are staying at the mgm!!

That or downtown.

 

Not all downtown is rubbish, though. I've stayed in the Plaza twice and absolutely loved it. It's on par with most any Hilton/Radisson/Holiday Inn property in other parts of the country. I also hear Golden Nugget rivals most strip properties.

 

The worst I ever stayed in on the strip was one of the garden rooms at the Tropicana before they decided to finally sink some money into renovations. What a dump...The shower didn't even drain...

Another vote for Hostel Cat. A public bunk house where the only place you can hang your sports jacket is above a shared toilet would be classic....

 

It looks like you are wanting strip, but I stayed at the El Cortez in one of the Cabana Suites last week for $39 bucks all in.. only thing sketchy was the location and having to walk across the street from the casino to get there.

 

Tam O'Shanter is probably the hotel he stayed at. It was where the Venetian now sits.

 

No countdown timer. I have seen pics from a friend that travels cheap (a lot). It was pretty grungy looking. No idea if it is the least expensive, though
