Would MSS be the right choice for me?

OK, I have been doing my homework and getting some feedback on other threads in this.

My next trip, I plan on staying 1-2 nights out of 4 total, downtown. I'm usually a center strip(harrahs, flamingo, Mirage) stayer. I have always wanted to stay downtown, and a lot of my research is pointing me to booking at MSS.

I like a clean and somewhat modern room. I do not require anything fancy, just don't want to feel like I am in the 70s in my room, or dirty.

I primarily play Craps, VP and Blackjack. The VP scene at Boars bar(spell?) sounds cool for me. I don't play for comps, but I used to get much better room deals from CET. So if I did stay and play downtown, I would probably keep the action under 1 place/players card. With Boyds having few options, I would like that.

Goldens Nugget pool sounds awesome, would love to check it out,but a pool is not a huge deal to me for a stay. Especially since I will probably be at Flamingo or Mirage for half the trip.

Vibe wise, I'm a sports guy, and I like tons of music, outside of cheesy pop or club music, especially when it is too loud. The D sounded kind of cool, until I found out the "type" of music they play loud..... I love classic rock, 80s music, grunge, classic hip hop, blues, or even old classics like Dean Martin/Sinatra. So any lounges or bars with any of that type of stuff is a huge plus to me. I plan on bar hopping downtown until I find that type of fit for me.

The MSS seems like it will be the right fit, but I am open to listening to other opinions

 

One of the great things about Downtown is you can just hop on over to another casino if you don't like the vibe in the one you're at. When the D first opened they played very loud not-my-kind of music. When were there in November, the music seemed a lot more mellow but we like the mellowness of the Golden Gate casino which is very close to MSS. MSS connects via a sky bridge to the California another cool casino full of fun-loving Hawaiians.

MSS is a nice place but it's not modern.

 

If you like craps, you'll like MSS. $5 mins and20X odds is unbeatable. If you like beer, MSS is unbeatable. You can get their microbrews at the tables.Plenty of $5 min. DD BJ tables. Rooms are nice, somewhat large and always clean. Only issue I've ever had is the shower head is placed kind of low for a 6' guy. But, hey, I can bend over. Comps are pretty liberal, especially compared to the Strip. I know you said you don't play for comps, but you'll probably get some anyway. I've stayed in every hotel downtown and MSS is one of my faves.

 

You won't be sorry if you choose MSS. We've had more fun there than any place we've ever stayed, friendly people all around. Enjoy your stay!

 

I stayed at the D a few nights ago. I was really impressed with the remodeled bathroom. The tub was removed and a shower installed with a rain style shower head with good water flow.
The room is decent size.

 

I am a huge MSS fan, but I would suggest you also look at Downtown Grand. Very nice rooms and a nice pool. The casino vibe can be a bit boring but unless they changed them AGAIN, decent VP tables. As mentioned, everything is so close it's easy to get up and walk to a different casino.

 

It's been a long time since I stayed at MSS but I like the place a lot.

 

MSS is a nice place. The rooms are big, the bathroom sink is outside the tub/toilet area. The rooms have shutters which are not room darkening. The north side faces the freeway and you will hear road noise. You're away from the Freemont Street experience but an easy walk to get to it. We've always enjoyed our stay there.

 

I love playing and drinking at MSS. But if you're looking for a somewhat modern room then you will not be happy. I felt like I was in an old motel. I would either pick DTG as Joe suggested or GN Rush, I've stayed at both. DTG is clean and modern, although sparse. Rush reminded me of Red Rock.

 

Give them a try, the good thing about downtown is you can wander around from casino to casino easily, after this trip you will have a better idea of which casino you like best.

 

This is the only beef I have with MSS. They do not allow doubling after splits. It is such a small percentage for the house to give up, but it is such a huge, entertaining thing, for the player to give up. The anti-customer attitude of it just annoys me.

SO, I encourage everyone that ever sits down at a BJ table at MSS to always indignantly say, "WHAT do you mean you don't allow doubling after a split?!" lol

 

don't need to play for comps. But use your card and you will get comp room offers for MSS as soon as you get home. If you don't feel like walking on the street, you can go from MSS through enclosed bridge to Cal and exit at 1st and Ogden. Cross street and go through back of Binions to fremont. If you need bus to strip, there is a SDX stop on Ogden near Main in front of Cal. Use slot points for 40% off food.

 

I think MSS is a good choice for you. The rooms will not blow you away, but are solid. If you are determined to play where you stay, Boyd has the only real multi-property players club at this moment, and have solid options for all your games, and for dining.

As to the music preference, they have live bands (often cover bands) playing on the FSE at night which you may find fits the bill just fine.

 

If you're paying for your room just stay at whatever hotel you feel most comfortable at. If you want to use the pool at Golden Nugget pay the extra and enjoy a better room as well. That's not going to prevent you from spending all your time playing at MSS. It's a 5 minute walk. Also if you're going to have two gaming days downtown give all your play to MSS one day and pick a non Boyd casino for your second day. That will double your chances of getting a good future offer.

 

All that sounds good. I don't "chase comps" is what I should have said. I do enjoy being comped, especially on future visits.
Even though my level of play has increased, my CET and MGM comps for room rates are the worst they have ever been for me. So if I like it downtown, and the place I stay takes care of me in the future, they could wind up with alot of my business!

 

Keep in mind for Downtown you will only get room offers from your "home casino" with Boyd, not all 3 casinos like you would with TR. If you do not have a B-Connected Card and sign up at MSS I believe MSS will be your home Casino. Where your first sign up for a card is your home casino. It can be changed on the website on at the property. All play at Downtown Boyd counts for back end comps FYI.

I think based on what you said you will like MSS. I have never stayed in the rooms, but that casino is my favorite place to play downtown (at least VP bar wise)

Don't forget if you get Quads to call an attendant over before you move on to get your scratch card!

 

I don't think it has been mentioned yet. All rooms at MSS (and Cal) have a mini fridge in them.

 

Unfortunately the DTG doesn't have regular open tables so no craps and a lot of time no bj. That means that you won't get any opportunities to get discounts or comps from your table play. The pool is nice at the DTG. (at MSS you have to use the pool at the Cal but it is basically a hole in the ground, no drink service (or any service for that matter).

MSS is a decent place to play craps (esp with 20x odds). Busy in the evenings though. the music they play there is mostly older type and more mellow, not very loud. It is possible that you could accure comps based on your play so that's not a bad thing. You can also go between the Cal and MSS for your play since there is a Passover to go between the 2 hotels. Some people don't like the Cal or MSS because the hotel isn't on the Fremont st experience so you have to walk if you want to go to the FSE. It is only about a 2 to 5 minute walk but some people rather have the convenience of walking outside their hotel into the FSE. As others have mentioned, the MSS offers a mini fridge (for free) in all rooms and I think they have a small wall safe (10" x 12" x 3") that you can put your valuables in.

The Golden Nugget is the hotel closest to the strip in terms of nice rooms and amenities. Some of us don't like to play there because the workers seem more "snobbish" (IMHO) and the pay tables and minimums are more like the strip.

The plaza is a nice place to stay at, rooms recently renovated not long ago. I like the plaza because they offer a good free tv/cable service. Not sure, it may be dish but if you like to stay in your room and watch tv I think the plaza is probably the best hotel for that because of all the channels they offer for free (including some semi-"adult" channels). Gaming there is so-so to many but easy to just walk out the door and across the street to other casinos.


The D music is still too loud for me and I don't like the music they play but many younger people like the D and GG.

the good thing with downtown is that the rooms are similar but you can easily walk between casinos if you don't like the play at one casino. For me, all I want is just a safe secure place to lay my head so don't need anything really special.

 

I don't know what your level of play is, but if you are a $25 player, you will do well. You will get offers for 3 free nights and some free play and food.
