I got this the other day from MGM.

Pardon my ignorance - surely I'm missing something obvious - but can anyone tell me what this object is that was inside the box?

My understanding is that if you don't know what it is, you are not supposed to receive it.
Perhaps they believe you are an Asian player?

That I believe is something used for hanging a purse, umbrella etc. on a table. I've seen similar gadgets abroad at the restaurants used by women for that purpose.

The MGM-writing side is non slippery, so, you put it sideways on the table, and the hook hangs downwards from the table, where you can hang your (well if you own one) purse :)

When it's used, it resembles a monkey hanging from a tree, hence the MGM's connection ;)

Yes. that's right. It's used to hang a purse at table's edge.
For those curious about the price, you can buy one in China for $1-$2.

I opened the box, showed the lady the "object" and she knew what it was in 2 seconds.

That's better than showing the lady the object and she starts laughing.

Great now this song is stuck in my head!

It's easy to do just follow these steps
    1: Cut a hole in a box
2: Put your junk in that box
3: Make her open the box
And that's the way you do it, It's my d*** in a box...

They actually have this song at some karaoke joints. Hilarity generally ensues.
