Why is the Palms so reasonable?

Seems like a few of the people I know are planning LV trips at the Palms, of all places, at quite reasonable rates, even on the weekends.

Is Palms hurtin' for business or something?

Palms has fallen a bit out of favor over the years. When I first started going to LV and it was Maloof owned it was a trendy hot spot for the cool kids from Cali. It now looks a bit run down and seems to be more of a has been and a locals joint. I think there is still a lot of coolness left, but it def isn't what it once was. Just like RIO you can get some killer rates if you don't mind the trek to the strip.

    Thanks.

I guess I'm out of the loop as far as the Palms is concerned. I always thought it was (still) oh-so-trendy for the 20-boppers from El Lay on the weekends and kind of a local VP place during the week.

I booked three nights at the Palms for the end of March, which I combined with a three night comp at Red Rock. It was really cheap - $60 per night including resort fee. I had forgotten all about the Palms. As an ex-local, we used to go there to eat at a pretty good Mexican restaurant that used to be there (Gardunos?) But somehow, it fell completely off my radar.

When I visit, I still prefer the locals places (Red Rock) over the Strip and Fremont places because I like decent VP paytables, reasonably priced food and drinks, easy in and out with the car, and the opportunity to earn comps for moderate play. CET and MGM properties hold no attraction for me.

The reviews on the Palms are really spotty. I have my fingers crossed for a good stay. For the money, how bad can it be?

Funny you mention it. On my last trip (two weeks ago) my wife and I made an excursion from the Strip to Palms (and Gold Coast) and I was really very pleasantly surprised by how much I liked hanging out at Palms. I hadn't been there for more than three years.

This was on a Monday afternoon, before Thanksgiving, so obviously not high tourist season, but the place was far from dead. My wife caught a movie at the theater, and I played full-pay quarter VP and 3:2 $10 blackjack for a few hours, finishing up about $150. The vibe was just fine, the place seemed clean, and there were a lot of food choices.

Given how reasonable the rooms are, I'd happily stay there on a guys' trip, even though I never rent a car. The cab to the strip was only about $15 (including tip) and of course there are shuttles at GC and Rio.

Agreed that Palms isn't as trendy as it once was, but the property is anything but run down. They bar/ lounge that they put in adjacent to the blackjack pit is top notch and the room renovations and renovations at N9ne are superb. "Looks a bit run down" is certainly misleading. It's not the Imperial Palace.

Obviously opinion based, but to me compared to the hey day of the mid 2000's where lots of folks were dressed to the 9's and the clubs were among the best in the city it appears a bit run down. They have for sure done some decent remodeling and added some new features but to me it just doesn't have the glitz it used to. Just my .2 :/

The rates have defiantly fallen and its a great value if you don't mind staying off strip.

Oh and lets let the Imperial Palace rest in peace, she took enough abuse when she was alive. HAHA

With the exception of my upcoming trip, I've spent a couple of nights at Palms each trip this year and the remainder at Cosmo. I love the place. It is NOT run down at all. The newly renovated rooms in the Ivory tower are very nice. I always get a corner room with two large windows, one stripview. One Rio/Gold Coast view. The Sportsbar has the nicest bartenders I've encountered in Vegas. Great dining options. It tends to be very busy on weekends and quieter through the week. The only downside is the off strip location. Palms has a shuttle to the Forum shops but we typically catch the shuttle from Rio to Ballys or Harrahs. The one-bedroom Ivory suite is reasonably priced, less than most regular strip rooms in mid tier properties. I love the place and am surprised more people don't stay there as it has a lot to offer. It gets a bit crazy during pool season on Ditch Fridays.

LOL, the IP has to be the Rodney Dangerfield of casinos - no respect! :) (Well, maybe the old Vegas World as well.) :)

Seriously, my only complaint about the IP was the dog-slow elevators! Well, and the luke-cool sodas in the gift shop as well.

Gosh, I am getting beat up on the run-down comment. I guess a poor choice of words, basically what I mean is in the mid 2000's the Palms was the cool spot, the celebrity hang out, very en vogue, trendy etc. It was like Cosmo is today. The crowd and the vibe of that day is gone. I haven't entirely visually inspected the place, admittedly. But, as I said the rates have dropped dramatically, they no longer have a top club and they don't get the celebrity crowds or as many of the top music acts as they used to. I was there in 2008 for a .50 cent concert and it seemed like every celebrity from Hollywood was in VIP at the Playboy Club and later at Moon/Rain whatever.

So to clarify, it isn't the trendy club banger it once was as far as vibe, to be it feels old and tired as far as crowd and vibe on weekends. To each their own, this is obviously an opinion based forum and I won't critique or argue anyone else's this is simply mine. Peace!

Captain Ron, now you've gone too far calling me old and tired!

Just kidding of course, I think you've hit the nail on the head. I'm 65 and very comfortable there on weekdays. Not sure about the vibe at night or weekends.

Nah, in it's heyday the place still was crowded and attracted the night time crowd. I think with all the competition from the new strip properties (Cromwell, cosmo, etc) the "in" scene moved back to the strip so the Palms supposedly went downhill in terms of attractiveness. To me the place seems the same, just that it doesn't have the crowd as it had before so you tend to notice the décor instead of the crowd.

I am headed that way myself! I don't do all the clubs and parties and bottle service nightly like I used too! The Palms used to be quite the place for the party crowd.

Run down suggests physical problems like worn out carpets and chipped paint. That's not the case at the Palms. It's just shifted to a different market. They've upped their focus on locals and towards goldenrod market customers. It sounds like they have put a lot into their rooms, too. Many elements that appealed to the trendy crowd are probably still there but the new owners aren't willing to compete with all the strip hotels that have mostly replicated the Palms moves to draw that same crowd. They really haven't found a way to stay in people's mind since the changes. I think they would benefit from an artist in residence that crowd draw some publicity and foot traffic.

lots of competition for the "it cool" factor now. Cromwell, SLS, Cosmo (my fave) and others have taken their bite out of Palms. I agree with earlier post about the Maloof's, just does not seem the same.
