Hi all, I was wondering if for a given game, say DBP where they are all 8/5 for example, are the odds better at say $5 vs $.05 like it is in slots? Last night, the wife and I were playing side by side, same game, she on nickels and me on quarters and dollars. Same pay table and game. Strategy was same for most every hand, but she really got crappy hands all night and I ended up with 6 four of a kind. Wondering if I should move her up to quarters and dollars as its no fun to keep getting bad results and hands.

If the paytable matches, the expected payback is exactly the same. Sometimes the cards are falling your way, and sometimes they aren't. My g/f and I have had similar scenarios where one person is hitting all the hands. It's supposed to happen sometimes.

I'm glad you were the one hitting things though since you had more money on the line!

In a lot of places though, the paytable does often go up between nickels/quarters/dollars, the higher the paytable, the better the game is on a percent return basis.

There are no "odds" in VP like in slots. The payout is adjusted via the paytable.

    Great Question Wccan,
Yes many times on multi denom VP machines as you increase the wager the paytables can also increase,
you can see this in action by just clicking/chaging the Denomination button on that V.P. machine.
super tip >>>Also you can have the exact same Bank of V.P. machines each with different paytables,
so you can look at each game before inserting a wager & selecting a machine.

The possible exception is a bank of Wide area progressives, with a pooled Jackpot for Royals & 4 OAK's,
where normally there all set to the same common paytables.

As far as Hot/Cold that is determined by the RNG, based on the exact time you press the button.
There is no "this machine is Hot" lets try & up the Ante, just pick a denomination your comfortable with
    and have fun.

    A great resource is http://www.vpfree2.com/

As others have said, the pay table (and thus the payback) of the machine can change depending on what denomination you are playing - a quarter machine *usually* has a better payback than a nickle machine.

    However...

For this it wouldn't have mattered what denomination your wife was playing: the "payback" and "house edge" on a machine are based on how much a machine pays based on the probability of an event occurring...

The important thing is: just because a machine has a higher payback than another machine it doesn't mean that the machine with the higher payback is going to hit the better hands more... what it means is that the machine with the higher payback is going to pay more when those hands hit.

    As an example:
You are playing a 9/6 Jacks or Better machine at 5 credits bet
Your wife is playing an 8/5 Jacks or Better machine at 5 credits bet
The "9" in "9/6" and the "8" in "8/5" is how much the machine pays for a flush per credit bet
By a coincidence you are both dealt the exact same hand: 2 of hearts, 3 of hearts, 7 of hearts, 8 of hearts, 10 of spades

The proper play here is to hold the four hearts and go for the flush draw
You both do that (hold all four hearts) and hit the draw button...

Your odds of making the flush are 9 cards out of 47... or 19.15%
Your wife's odds of making the flush are 9 cards out of 47... or the same 19.15%

The difference is: if you make your flush draw you get paid 9 credits times by your wager (5 credits) for a total of 45 credits... your wife will only be paid 8 credits times by her wager (5 credits as well) for a total of 40 credits.

So your machine has a higher payback NOT because its "luckier" or going to hit better hands more often, but because when it does win on certain hands it pays more than her machine... but otherwise the odds of hitting any hands or making any draws is the same.

The payback percentage is the same. The actual DOLLARS are larger.

9 credits is 9 credits is 9 credits.

The machine will display the same set of cards no matter what denomination you are playing.

HI All, thanks so much for your comments. We were at the Peppermill in Wendover. Playing mostly 9/6 or 8/5 BP or DBP. Typically, if game is not doing well, we just move games or machines. Last night, since my machine was doing so well, she just changed games rather than move. Did not help! Next time, will just have her move. Her strategy is 'good enough' that it's not the root cause. Based on these comments, seems like it was just not her night! Going to be in Miami tomorrow on business and will go to Hollywood for some VP play. Any suggestions on that place!

Hi All, I tried to reply with thanks while ago, but it appears it did not work. Thank you all for your thoughts and info. In some ways, I think the machine she was on just was not happy! We would have moved around, but my machine was doing so well, did not seem like a good idea. We're playing at Peppermill in Wendover. Will be on a business trip tomorrow to MIAMI, so plan to swing by Hollywood for some VP. Anyone played there?

This was all fascinating to me because I'm left with some better understanding and also a bit curious about the RNG for shuffling the deck in VP. Fascinating concept because it suggests that as in slots, someone can easily(via luck of course) get back to back jackpots or quick turn if things are going your way.

    Your welcome!

Yeah, the machine just spits random cards out. So you can have waves of both good and bad. On single line, the best i've done is about 5 quads in 15 minutes.

As for Hard Rock Hollywood, I haven't been there, but here is a list of better games from vpfree2.com. It hasn't been updated in awhile, so they may not all be there. They might have 9/6 Jacks or 8/5 Bonus for dollars, so that would be pretty good.

Each hand you play is independent of every other hand. So you have the same chances of being dealt the 4 of a kind or Royal on each hand. For non-wild games the hand is dealt from a randomized 52 card deck. The deck is reshuffled before each hand. I've been dealt 4 of a kinds on back to back hands, so it happens.
