I'm going to try really hard to leave this alone, but it was alot of fun last year.

But if your butcher can't get you one, let me know......I'll let the new dog loose on the next flock that wanders thru the yard.

I have personal experience of someone's 2 dogs getting into a turkey farm in Oregon 2 weeks before Thanksgiving ("Turkey Day?") and many of the birds died of fright.
The folks from the farm went property to property in the rural environment with their rifles and shotguns looking for the dogs. Never found 'em.
Turkeys can drown looking up into a heavy rain I've been told.
Dogs chasing (running) deer can be shot on sight where we lived also.
    Pass the potatoes please.

I like my turkeys fat, large-breasted, and unable to reproduce without artificial insemination.

I could shoot one of the dozens that live in the wetland woods behind my yard, but I prefer the free one from my grocery store. First, I don't have a lethal weapon, and second, I wouldn't have a clue as to how to clean the poor thing. I thought meat was something that just came in a styrofoam dish wrapped in plastic.:ssst:

Mom is doing Thanksgiving this year and had the nerve to ask me to bring a pie *from Costco*. Gasp. We'll see about that. On the other hand, I have a business trip to China the week before so I might not be in the mood to cook (or esp bake which I don't love to do since I don't have a sweet tooth).

Just got my first venison of the year in the freezer- came from my FIL - no clue what he did to it so I just requested the processor do it all as ground meat....I'll definitely cook something deer-y for Christmas but not sure what yet. Maybe a shepherd's pie....

We're going to be in Vegas for Thanksgiving, does anyone know which cheap buffet has Heritage turkey. That regular stuff just won't cut it this year.

Moi bring up 1st World Problems? Never. Well, maybe a bit... sometimes... O.K., it was probably me.

Spatchcocked ours last year. It really does cook more evenly. However, cutting the spine out of a big bird is a tough job and requires a serious pair of kitchen shears. I'm sure the butcher would do it for us - but I didn't think of it at the time.

We need to team up on a holiday meal some time. Dane makes beer, you, Terri and I cook!

The gang is coming here again for Christmas. We're thinking a rib roast or tenderloin for the main. I won't write here that it will be USDA Prime since of course Select would be just as good. :wink2: We usually do some kind of pot-style fare for Christmas Eve so folks can dig in when when they get to town and some of the neighbors roll through. It's usually easy and ethnic. This year we're thinking chile verde and tamales.

I'll send you something from PattiBakes in Buellton. Those girls rock the pies!

I just found out that a local BBQ joint (Smoky Joe's, Chess) will sell deep fried turkeys and sides, if you get your order in early enough.

    Deal me in.

No steak from this one - it's all ground.

I'm thinking I might smoke something, but not sure what. I've been looking over my menus from the past few years and I've pretty much done all the main proteins. I smoked a brisket a couple months ago that turned out great but if I do shepherds pie with venison I don't want beef as well. Not turkey, since I know mom will have that on Thanksgiving. I'm smoking a chicken next weekend - maybe I'll be inspired....

Ken - Christmas Eve is always seafood for us (mom grew up Catholic ;-) But not Italian, so it was just bouillabaisse usually. I like to do a decadently rich crab bisque. But typically that's just the two of us.
