Is it me, or are the Vegas fans slightly different on this site, vs the folks that listen to Five Hundy by Midnight?

Seems like VMB is more into the strip, and strip events while Five Hundy by Midnight is more into downtown and downtown events.

Not a bad thing either way, just wondering if you've noticed the same thing.

must check out that board. might need to switch boards. i find my self rarely reading trip reports from the strip because i don't play there.

this is an excellent topic and a timely post, and really was a subject of conversation between Jersey Bill and myself a number of times over the VIMFP weekend.

Him and I are basically the crossover demographic (along with MikeE who I've seen on both, but not so much here lately), and we were kind of surprised by how small that sliver is (thats what she said).

I think they are both fantastic groups of people, but there is definitely a recognizable, quantifiable variance.

I'm not sure downtown is necessarily the whole story of the difference as a lot of people on VMB are big into downtown, although those trip reports haven't been the biggest focus of late, and certainly the Five Hundy/VTers are very interesting in the strip. I think just VIMFP itself is downtown based. And probably overall a larger percentage of FH/VT participants are downtown focused. While VMB seems to be slightly more strip-centric, with lots of awesome high-roller reports detailing the high-end suites and high limit rooms. But there are VTer's and Five Hundyer's who are into that too.

It may just be whichever one people found first they stick with. Both are excellent communities full of fantastic people. We spent the entire weekend doing "both" and it was great. I would certainly encourage anyone from VMB to listen to Five Hundy--its fantastic--and to participate in their FB group. I would be equally encouraging to the Five Hundy fan who haven't experienced VMB to try this out, its a great resource!

I just started following them on Facebook but I don't listen to the podcast or check their websitre often. I think that Its an overgeneralization to say VMB is more strip focused or that VIMFP is more downtown focused. They have developed a relationship with Derek Stevens and the D from having their "convention" there but that doesn't seem to be the focus on the FB posts I've seen. As for us, there is a good percentage of people here who focus downtown and a segment here who do neither and are focused offstrip. I do see more conversation on gambling there than here but that's about it. We probably break down over the podcast and Vegas Tripping than anything else. We don't seem to be as impressed with that as they are with themselves.

Well put BeeJay. Plenty of room for both communities. After listening to 5hundy and VT over the years, I don't think there is an appreciable difference between them and us - the truth that binds us all is a passion for all things Vegas.
I'm a VMB man tried and true, but would certainly enjoy doing a VIMPF wekend some time.
This doesn't have anything to do with original post, but my favorite Vegas podcast is "Gambling with an Edge" by Bob Dancer and Richard Munchkin.

I think I fall into the crossover demographic as well. I'm primarily a strip person but I will admit their podcasts gave helped me explore downtown. I've gotten tons of tips from both here and the various podcasts. If I were to focus on gambling downtown I probably would gravitate towards The D as I do like how the Steven's brothers run their operations. Though currently the Cosmo is my drug of choice. They treat me well with comps and I enjoy the atmosphere. I don't think I could do downtown for more than one or two nights.

Maybe we need a VMB podcast with reviews of Vueve Cliquot, Party Triples Bungalow and meals at SW?

I like their podcast a lot! I listen every week! I would love to actually go to VIMFP someday, but it's mid-October, and I like going to LV when the pools are good to go.

Also, I do think VMB tends to speak about the strip more than downtown. If you look at the posts on VMB Strip Hotels vs Downtown Hotels, there are more than double the amount of posts.

I'm also someone who very much enjoys both communities. I first heard about Five Hundy on this board. And that led me to You Can Bet on That, Vegas Gang, etc. I have a 45-50 minute commute each way, so I have plenty of time for podcasts. The thing that makes both of these groups great is the diversity and inclusion. We have micro rollers and high rollers in both groups. And everyone is polite and cordial, which isn't necessary the way things work in the real world. As far as the VIMFP crowd being downtown, I think downtown lends itself better to such a diverse group. A bigger player can play anywhere. While a smaller player may have a hard time finding a decent game on the strip. That, combined with the hospitality of Derek Stevens has made downtown and VIMFP a great match. I haven't been to VIMFP. The last two years I was in town the week after and the week before. I am going to try to make it next year. One thing I wish was more available downtown is premium rooms. I'm not much of a fan of GN and there's not really anyplace else to get a top-quality strip-like room.

Pools are still open. And there are many more strip hotels than downtown, so that could account for the number of posts.

I was OVERactive at LVA for years, so you poor bastards inherited me full time when that community went to shit. (Full disclosure, I contributed to the newsletter and website over the years and HP published two of my books. But as for a web forum, the content over time just evaporated.) The nice thing about the internet -- aside from the navel-lint trolls I was lamenting on another thread -- is we all can find a place and often places where we fit in, that appeal to us. That appears to be the case here, though I admit I've never checked out that other site.

As for numbers: This is a general interest Vegas site, and the Strip simply garners more attention, more visitors, period, in all ways, because it covers far more space, and has far more hotels and casinos, far more restaurants, far more sites and sights, far more bars and clubs. It's a numbers game, that's all. We also have an active general interest population here that keeps things interesting and fun with thoughts and passions on all manner of subjects. That might dilute the Vegas-orientation quotient slightly but it is one of the keys in keeping this place fresh.

And most people here appreciate grammar and spelling and the like, so it's one of the easier places on the interweb on our eyes and "ears."

I think the biggest difference is that VT and Five Hundy are the voice of their creators... Four of five contributors on VT and Tim on Five Hundy. They kind of lead discussions; if by no more than mentioning a topic on the show, which then bleeds into the respective forums. On the other hand, VMB really only has the voice of the posters (with moderation where needed).

I think VIMFP was made for me, but my fall trips are with my poker buddies and there is no way I can swing two trips from the Midwest in a 2-3 month time frame. I kept up with the #vimfp hashtag on Twitter all weekend and I feel like I really missed out.

Then again, I've also learned that it is harder to get banned from VMB than it is from the FHBM Facebook group! :noangel:

Good point about more hotels than downtown, I didn't think of that. Also, when your "Vegas newbie" comes on here, they probably get drawn to the Vegas strip area of VMB. About the pools.... I was in LV, early October. Not that it was cold by any means, but it was not as warm as I'd like for pool season. One day it was 82, which scared off a lot of the folks at the Venetian and Caesars pool. From now on, I will always go in May and again in August.

You know, I've been dying to try that pool, maybe next year. I always see it from the Aria buffet, and it looks like a great time!

I've been following the Five Hundy and Vegas Gang podcasts for years although never been to the VIMPF thing. Sounds like fun but it's never worked out with my travel plans. More of a strip person really. I don't think either site(s) including this one really centers on DT or the strip anyway.

Wait, you are a member of a Facebook group for fans of a Podcast you don't listen to? That makes no sense. Reminds me of one other woman who posted to the group saying that she didn't know what a Podcast was. Here's a tip: give it a shot - you'll know why all those folks joined the FB page!

I don't do podcasts. I have heard theirs before but that's not a way I want to spend my time. And the reputation of those guys is something I encountered well before I joined VMB. It used to be if they reported something, it was reposted everywhere But I don't worship at their altar. I don't even know how I ended up on their page - FB probably suggested it and they took me in. Every now and again something on the newsfeed is interesting so I have stayed it.
