Have never stayed downtown, but visited last year and loved it!

Had a few concerns. I heard the standard rooms are being renovated, which is great, but which rooms are facing away from the noise? I just wondered if it is worth it to book the deluxe room to be quiet or book the standard and hope for an upgrade when we arrive?

Also, how are the beds here? Both of us have bad backs, so need at least a decent bed.

Are smoking/non smoking preferences taken seriously here? We don't need fancy, but do want clean, quiet and a decent bed.

Any ofther info would be appreciated on opinions! Thanks!

Ask them for a south tower room away from fremont. I stay 4 to 5x a year the beds are comfortable, the rooms are old and they look it.

My husband has a bad back and took a nap on one of the beds in a suite there a couple weeks ago. He said if he tried to sleep on that bed all night his back would go out.

Here's hoping the new beds they put in are much better!

I think you are jumping the guy with the phrase "being renovated". The only thing I remember seeing is someone saying they saw a hallway closed where they were replacing mattresses. That is hardly a renovation. They replaced the torn couches in the suites a few months ago, while also replacing the coffee tables near the couches, and maybe even the beds. That isn't a renovation either in my book. They are still old well worn rooms.

My experience with the beds in the Four Queens is that they are lacking compared to most other LV casino hotels. Even if they are new mattresses, you can bet that they are of lower quality. That's the way a place like the Four Queens is run.

Regarding "renovations", they haven't announced anything that I have seen. However, there is more than just mattress replacement activity happening. The halls look like a construction zone and there was piping outside one of the rooms being renovated. I'm looking forward to finding out. There are a lot of things I like about 4Q but room quality is just ok.

For Zoey11, I'm not sure the current renovations will impact you. I don't know what your time frame is but I'm thinking this will be a very gradual room by room type process. I know nothing for sure but I saw evidence of construction without seeing anyone actually doing anything. The existing mattresses are not terrible but not good. The D is a much better option if that is a concern. Based on the sleep test, I would say Main Street Station might be the best. If I ever sleep past my normal time, MSS is the place where that happens. I agree that South tower is the way to go at 4Q. Not only less noise but better control over room temp. The north tower needs some updates before I will stay there again. I can't stand being hot.

As for noise, it is almost impossible to be certain to be away from it.
That is because the D owns the block behind the Four Queens and uses it for musical concerts.
So far, it has generally been hosting concerts on weekends and not all the time. But if noise is an issue, it is a good idea to call the D and see what is happening on that back lot. It is as large as a city block.

Last trip I had just been doing long late hours with my son for three exhausting days. He got on the bus for the airport and I rolled into bed at about 5 PM thinking I'd get a good sleep and be ready for early morning poker at Golden Nugget.
5PM was long before the heavy metal concert was going to happen.
5PM was when the rehearsal started.

When I talked it over afterwards with the clerks, they admitted that there really was no way to book anywhere in the casino now and be sure it would be quiet.
Not the fault of the Queens, certainly.

But that, along with the reduction in mailed comps so that 3 night weekends are no longer covered at my gambling level, and the number of blackout dates that seem to deny bookings, and the charging of resort fee on 2 for 1 room deals at the D (I liked booking these casinos back to back) has me thinking I just may cut back on my gambling this next trip and seed a new venue. Generally, up until now the Four Queens was the first place I booked and it defined my trips.
Like the El Cortez before it, that casino made my frugal trips possible. I concentrated my bankroll there each trip. Now I can actually rent a room other places for the same price as they are charging me and there is no need to gamble in those places at all, so I can stay longer than 3 nights without watering down my bankroll. I can return to really being a low roller for the entire trip.
I'm still thinking it through. I like the Golden Nugget poker room in the early morning hours, so I like the idea of being downtown and able to start playing poker at 2 AM.
However, for the frugal gambler the cheap casinos are drying up. Gold Spike, El Cortez, Four Queens, D, Imperial Palace.
Laughlin is still cheap. I'll take a look this November.
And the 2-6 spread limit at Monte Carlo, Excalibur, Mandalay Bay is pretty nice as well. I'm trying Excalibur too in November. That I can book back to back with 2 freebies at the Orleans.

Then I'm seeding Palace Station this next trip to see if they will send me anything for playing at the dime level.
And there is always Arizona Charlie's Boulder.
    Okay, sorry, I'm rambling.

Thanks for all the answers! I am looking into the D, and already have three nights comped at GN, but have to pay the resort fees.

Im just a little afraid to stay at 4 Queens. They send me offers of two nights and 40 freeplay, so I may book it this winter when we go, and just go to the room and check it out.

Well, they are doing some major renovations this time rather than just replacing mattresses. Some new drywall even!

These pics were taken last week on the first floor of the south tower. They have blocked off one wing (hallway). We seemed to be riding in the elevators with construction guys a lot so they must be working on at least a few other floors as well. Mwig, do you remember what floor you were on?

I was on a comp last weekend at the nugget and did not pay the resort fee.

I hate resort fees. Was always platinum with CET, and now will have to pay them I guess.
I also emailed the D to see if they can comp anything up front, but I had emailed a host someone recommended on here, and they
    never even responded.

If they don't respond this time, I think I will go with GN, but maybe book four queens offer and see what the rooms are like. Hate those
resort fees at GN and D though!

Imagine they will comp those off at the end of the trip though, does anyone know how much play is merited to get comped resort fees and
    rooms at the D?

If you are comped at the nugget or d the resort fees are waived.

You don't have to be staying at 4Q to use the free play. One of the nice things about their offers. You could also book the nights at the same time you have another option so you can go up and try out the mattress. At least that would end the questions.

So high level gamblers who get full comps pay no resort fees at the D.
However, mid level to low rollers lost a comp this year.
Last year resort fees were waived on a 2 for 1 mailed offer. Now, they must be paid on the cash night portion. So, for low rollers, this was about a 50% reduction in comp. The D is still a decent deal most of the time, but I concentrate my play to preserve my bankroll over these 23 to 25 day trips and to get the most EV for my play.
I like to low roll somewhere and get decently comped.
The D's decision to toss in a hefty resort fee was in part to raise hotel rates for those who don't gamble. Now, they've decided to raise them just a bit more for those who gamble moderately.
Then too I loved that nickel drop full pay deuces and I'd play it for hours between the times when the 8/5 Vue bar Bonus progressives were not in a player friendly place. I was entertained, my mind challenged, at real nickel rates. No longer possible. That machine is gone.
Finally, some nights the D has rates as low as $16, so even with the resort fee the 2 for 1 mailing is a great deal. However, the LIfe is Beautiful and other festivals push up room rates downtown. I only used 2 nights of the offer during this year's September time and the rates were $34 a night , so $56 with resort fee. $28 a night does not reflect much EV gained by gambling.
In fact, in November I booked 3 nights for $28 right across the street at the Fremont using the American Casino Guide coupon (buy 2 get one free no resort fee, no gambling daily score to maintain)

My strategy for the next 2 day trip will be to cut back on play and see how little play at the D will still generate the 2 for 1 offer and to look for other places where moderate play might capture more comps.
Playing nickel triple play at the Orleans on senior Wednesday is probably the best bang for my buck.
The 9/7 with progressive DB is a more dependable VP than the D 8/5 Bonus.
I'm low rolling there with more entertainment for my risk. I get three lines for 75 cents a spin rather then one line for $1.25 a spin. I get two free buffets, reduced movie tickets, $10 free food added to my 2 free nights, drawings, The Nite Kings, a much nicer room, a heated pool ( my son and I braved the D pool last November and were pleased for the polar bear experience but it can't compare with the Orleans pool)
Then last year right in the middle of the day Orleans gave out $5 to anyone with a player's card who stood in a short line.
    And their elevators are efficient.
Their location puts me right on a bus line to the section of the strip where the most frugal shows happen.
And somehow my Orleans play must be affecting Gold Coast offers. Last year I got 2 free nights. This year I got a nice mailing with reduced rates. I don't play there except for a bit of diversion, $20 here or there. I don't worry about daily play averages. So why they cut in half the B Connected rates is well beyond me, but I'm glad that they did it when a family meetup (most of them staying at Bellagio) made the Gold Coast the only reasonable choice.
Also, points I earn with just a bit of play at Boyd casinos can be used so many places. D points can be used just at the D in the café. I love the café, but gambling more than I need for breakfast gives me points I won't use.
Since I figure my gambling bankroll as the difference between my other expenses in Vegas and what they might be in other places in the world, I want to reduce expenses as much as possible. In one sense, I want only to gamble with their money.
I know that my situation is a rare one, and that my low rolling seems ludicrous to many Vegas visitors. But to put room rates in perspective, last year in November I was in Vegas for 25 days (4 at the D) and spent $9.25 a night on average for room costs (resort fees, taxes, everything)
It was a losing trip. I lost $928 gambling.
However, by keeping expenses down it still is a lot of fun and a grand vacation for very little expense. Being retired I have much more time than money and I sit home some days when I'd like to travel because the money isn't there. But the money to travel to Vegas is always there for a low roller like me.
    Details are herehttp://vegasbirthdaybash.blogspot.com/2014/11/tr-snippet-costs.html

Actually, when I budget in not using my car for 25 days, not going grocery shopping, etc even a losing trip to Vegas saves me money. Thanks Jean Scott.

    Dewey,

They have NSUD upstairs with a much better payback than the 8/5 bonus machines. If you use one of the $5 for every 50 point coupons in either ACG or LVA you have a sizable off the top advantage as that coupon equates to a 1% cash back bonus which by the way is in addition to the normal point accrual. You can use both coupons in a calendar year so two days with a nice edge. Just to be clear, this is for the D. I know this thread started as a 4Q question.

Bed quality is always so subjective. Some of us prefer firm, some prefer softer, some in between. Certainly old saggy mattresses are no good for anyone though.

I used to stay at 4Q every trip from about six years ago until last year. Rooms have always been old and declining. Two years ago I started hearing rumors that the owners were broke and maintenance was slipping, so any sign of renovation is good news. Everyone now seems well-versed in the 4Qs noise issues, securing a quiet room is very difficult due to the street stages. When I stayed solo I would request two queen beds, chances were that one would have a decent mattress.

Very true that what constitutes a good mattress is very subjective.

I'm not mwig, but we were on the 9th floor of the south tower a couple weeks ago when they were doing renovations.

The north tower is the one which faces Fremont Street.

Even numbered rooms face the street and are definitely noisier at all times of day and night.

Odd numbered rooms face away from the street. I've never been disturbed by street noise in an odd numbered north tower room at The Four Queens - my "go to" place for solo downtown trips..

One other thing to keep in mind. In the north tower, at least, the ice machines are on every other floor. Not too much of an inconvenience, really. Take the stairs down and the elevator up. Works like a charm.

Another big plus for the north tower is that you are just about fifteen steps from Fremont Street when you step out of the elevator. How sweeeeet it is!!

Okay, help me out. Has there ever been a concert in the D music block while you were in a North Tower odd numbered room? And how was that? Perhaps that is the answer. If there is no concert scheduled, then I like the South end rooms where I can play my TV and not bother anyone if I can't sleep.

Oh. The Four queens will listen to requests on comped rooms and as long as you will wait, they will assign you a room that meets your expectations.
