Yesterday and today Vegas TV and print media have had stories on the Alon Las Vegas folks submitting permits to the county. Alon is slated for the former Frontier site and is run by James Packer (who owns the Crown resorts in Australia) as well as Andrew Pascal, Elaine Wynn's nephew. The TV story showed a rough rendering that looked underwhelming, but Pascal indicated that more info should be forthcoming next month. The interesting aspect to me was that the resort will only have 1100 rooms, which is really small in the Mirage forward era which has seen 3000+ room resorts (I think NYNY was the smallest newly-constructed one on the Strip at 2000 rooms). But I've always been interested to see if a smallish standalone place can make it, and would really be excited if such a place had top-notch amenities like a great pool, great show, great buffet, and competitive gambling conditions to boot.

Anyway, here's the Vegas Tripping article on the news:

Considering that boutique is the new rage, 1100 rooms kinda makes sense in a way, especially if the plan is for high end. It's easier to justify a higher nightly rate when you really could sell out.

It kind of reminds me of M Resort. 1100 rooms is small, but they could probably expand if they are successful. They have a pretty good location between Fashion Show Mall and Resorts World right across from Encore. With James Packer and Crown Resorts involved, along with Andrew Pascal and Rob Oseland it should be a very competitive resort.

IM hoping they are not serious with 1100 rooms. I guess I was expecting something bigger and better than city of dreams in Macau. That place looks so cool

Interesting that the property that Alon is replacing--the Frontier--had just shy of 1,000 rooms.

Pascal is Elaine Wynn's nephew and is on his way up in the industry.

That exterior looks like a hospital.

Bill, I would venture to say given what Andrew already has done during his tenure at Wynn, he's already a pretty big name regardless of his aunt.

Agreed. What I'm referring to is some industry analysts think Pascal may end up leading Wynn in the future. I like him - he keeps his head down, isn't flashy, and has good street cred. He's had enough successes to prove himself and enough failures to toughen him up.

While I'm certainly not blown away by the visuals I'm seeing in those renderings, I can't help but be excited at the prospect of another Strip hotel/casino linking the current "end" of the main part of the Strip (Fashion Show Mall) to Resorts World. By "main part of the Strip" I mean the length that your average visitor will walk from one building to the next before turning around or hopping in a cab back to their hotel.

Too much space between buildings and the heat and/or distance turns people around, but put enough desirable stops (ie attractive hotels/casinos) between two points on the Strip and foot traffic will continue past its current end point. As someone who spends the majority of my time in Vegas walking the Strip, casino hopping, and playing/drinking in as many fun places as I can, I love the idea of the North end of the Strip really developing and eventually extending all the way down to SLS (if they last that long).

    Good luck to them!

The renderings are very, very preliminary.
Look at what Packer is doing at home.

Another bland luxury property? Good luck trying to steal Wynn's customer base. There are a limited amount of people who go to Vegas in the $300-500 a night standard hotel room range.

Although I have been in Aria once and it has a very nice casino, I'd rather put my genitals in a blender than spend any part of my vacation in an office building. City Center may as well not exist to me as it's simply a void on the strip I must pass. The Alon rendering looks like it will be another void I must cross to get to the interesting and attractive Resorts World.

Good point. A reporter asked Steve Wynn this Spring what he thought of the competition coming across the street. Wynn said he welcomed it - that the increased visitation to the area would raise the tide for everyone.

I really don't see a name like ALON attracting people. Its as bad as Aria. Alon is similar to alcoholics anonymous. Maybe the Frontier Desert Inn would be a bigger draw.

I agree. Maybe it will work for a short time in this "LA-chique" trend that's kind of somewhat going on in Vegas but it's so god damned boring. The whole city center thing is so boring. Why would you travel all the way to the world-renowned, one of a kind Las Vegas Strip for this:

OH YAY!!! SHINY OFFICE BUILDING WINDOWS!!! THAT'S JUST WHAT I ALWAYS WANTED ON MY ONCE A YEAR OR LESS VACATION FOR THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS!!!

That's about as exciting and awe inspiring to look at as current pop country is to listen to.

You wanna find out if that view is actually at all interesting to look at? Bring in some gray clouds and take the same picture, then tell me if anyone wants to set it as their desktop background.

I love the name and I love the renderings.

It is sleek and contemporary which is my style.

I will definitely be a customer.

Interesting thought. When Alon and Resorts World are finished, you'll be able to walk from Mandalay Bay all the way to Circus Circus with no gaps. On the other side of the street there's a pretty big gap after Encore, and a lot of development would need to happen to get you all the way to SLS.

Yup, that was my thought and hope. Regardless of whether I like the concepts or possible designs yet, I love the idea of having more destinations to check out that are within walking distance of the previous one. Linking multiple destinations in a row is a big bonus for someone like me who walks from one to the next most of my trip. That's where most of my fun lies.

I'm not really loyal to any hotel, casino, or brand. I have my preferences but I'm too "low roller" to get any real comps. I'll play anywhere I spot a game or table that entices me on my walk and choose my hotel based on location and how comfortable I feel in the rooms and at the pool. The enjoyment to me is not chasing comps but really more sightseeing and just soaking in all of the energy while spending my bankroll here and there. I could never sit and play in a single casino for an entire trip even if I knew I'd get comps from it, and even if it was a short trip.

But that's just me. I know for some people it's chasing the comps and keeping track of points and all that makes it fun. Do what you love!

Also, an great exterior design might draw me in but won't necessarily turn me away if I don't like it. I'll still stop in to check out the interior, obviously, which is what really matters since that's where I'd be spending most of my time if I visit.
