Is gambling basically the only thing to do in AC? I've been told that it's becoming quite run down and unsafe. What are your thoughts thereon?

Gambling, beach, restaurants, comedy shows, concerts, headline acts, clubs, bars, shopping, outlets, boardwalk, etc......

I doubt you will be walking through the neighborhoods surrounding the casinos in AC, so you will be well taken care of. Some of the casinos are worn, but I feel the downtown Vegas strip has worse conditions, except for a select few casinos.

I go weekend visits several times a year. As a single older female I don't feel unsafe but I also don't go wandering the streets at night. The only thing I see left out of the list from yankee is the amusement pier by the Taj.

In other words: well worth a visit?

I can't believe I forgot to mention the pier NYNJ...

It's well worth a visit, depending on what you're looking to do, how far you're traveling, how long you're planning on staying, and where you plan on staying (hotel).

I think so. I wouldn't spend as much time there as I would in Las Vegas unless you are a beach person. Certainly late spring to fall is the best time to go.

It's not at all like Vegas... so if you're expecting something akin to a Vegas experience, it's not worth going. The only thing remotely close to a Vegas experience is at the Borgata. The most Vegas and AC have in common is gambling. They also lack sports betting but gamblers in AC are big into horse betting. Much more so than Vegas gamblers.

You'll also find some slight variations of gambling rules in AC that you don't find in Vegas. Like paying commission when betting on certain craps bets rather than paying on a win. Surrender is no where to be found in blackjack. On the surface, most games are the same though and most bettors wouldn't even realize the difference.

Very few upscale restaurants and the variety of shows and acts is pretty bad... though they do have entertainment, it's not even close to the same level as Vegas.

The city itself is pretty rundown and seedy. It always has been. I wouldn't say it's gotten better or any worse over the years. Crime is high and as casinos start to close their doors and more people lose their jobs, I would assume crime is only going to get worse. Unless you're on the doorstep of a casino when it's getting dark, you're probably not safe.

That said, if all you're looking to do is gamble, AC can really scratch an itch.

Not so much a gambler. But in DC area, so maybe a w/e trip just to see it would be worthwhile. And I have a free night from getting the TR Visa.

Besides Borgata, where can you bet on the horses in AC?

Ballys next to the poker room on the level above the casino. Just take the escalator up from inside the casino.

When was the last time you were in Downtown Las Vegas??? The area has been significantly cleaned up. I haven't been to AC in over 15 years, but as I remember it, more than two block off the Boardwalk and it was pretty seedy.

I was there the last two years and felt dirty walking around there. It made me feel like I was in Coney Island with slot machines. Excluding The D, Golden Nugget, LVH (Westgate), and maybe one other.

AC has some nice stuff. They've been working on non-gaming attractions and getting more conventions. I'm going back again in May for the Atlantic City Boardwalk Con to meet some Hollywood actors and buy some comic book artwork.

The whole room is gone. It's part of Guy Fieri's restaurant now. CZR took out horse racing from all their casinos in AC year or two ago. .

The LVH is nowhere near Downtown. From my experience you can walk all over Downtown and the surrounding areas with no trouble at all hours of the night. I've felt safer Downtown than on the Strip.

If you are from DC and never been to Atlantic City and you have one free night, I would say give it a try and form your own opinion. I am biased as I have vacationed at the Jersey Shore my whole life. Although 2014 saw closures of the Atlantic Club, Showboat, Revel, and Trump Plaza, there are still 8 other properties open pulling down $3.5 billion in gaming revenue, that ain't hay. I don't feel unsafe in the areas near the boardwalk, and I have walked the boardwalk at midnight between casinos.

Outside of gambling there are the usual Jersey Shore activities like bike riding, fishing, crabbing, sneaking beers on the beach and wearing dark sunglasses so as to nonchalantly peek at the girls in bikinis. I love the Golden Nugget deck in the summer.

As for race books, the AC Racetrack closed this year, so the only option as far as I can tell is at the Borgata.

The complaint voiced by one and all is the high hotel rates on weekends, it's called supply and demand, so we tend to stay offshore in Absecon. Our low play gets comped rooms Sunday-Thursday, so rates increase on Friday and really go up Saturday. Over Easter we rented a 2 bedroom timeshare at the Wyndham Tower and had a great trip, I would absolutely stay there again.

Well, looks like I have three nights comped at Caesar's in A/C, so I think I'll head up there and check it out!
