Noodle House in California - Anyone Eaten There?

Like many, I was dismayed to see Pasta Pirate bite the dust. Has anyone been to the replacement Noodle House? The Cal's website only has a single pic and a brief description, but no menu.

 

They have a menu right near the front door of the place. Sorry I didn't take a pic of the menu, hopefully they will put it on the boyd web site (eventually).

I did see my friend eating there one night (2 weeks ago) so I went in and chatted with him while he ate. His comment was that the prices were a little expensive and the portions were small. The food was decent but not anything really special. He probably wouldn't be back to the place, especially since he isn't into the "fusion" type of small portions of food and higher prices. The problem I see is that most Hawaiians are looking for a "real" meal and not small portioned meals where they get hungry 2 hours later.

The comment I heard was that the pasta pirate wasn't very popular with the Hawaiians and wasn't very busy much of the time and Boyd was looking for an alternative because the market st. café lines were always long during certain times of the day or night. Unfortunately I don't think this noodle house fits the bill with the Hawaiian people visiting the place, but that's JMHO.

 

I will visit it in 2 weeks and provide a report.

 

I tend to think this also. But maybe the chefs there will be open-minded and adjust the menu if necessary to satisfy the target demographic, which I still think is the older, more mature crowd. I really can't judge since I haven't tried the place, but when I was there last week it was mostly empty during business hrs.

Hawaiianmark of this board posted that he liked the food. He mentioned the ox-tail stew is great. My sis-in-law and her husband is going to the Cal next week and I asked them to try it out and see how it is.

We were there last month and found the place nice and clean, probably because it was new (see photo advertising and it pretty much looks like that). Found the prices somewhat high for what was served and the portions were very minimal (I will never understand a restaurant that charges $x and provide such paltry portions). I ordered some sort of soupy dish, which I thot was to be filled with meat and vegetables (I was thinking gau gee mein). The soup tasted very good, but there was hardly any ingredients in my serving - I was still starved after the meal that I had to get a bite elsewhere. Partner was not pleased with her order either.

On top of that we were seated right next to the door of the kitchen entry (servers kept going in and out of that swinging door, very annoying) even though the entire place had only about 4 parties.

A relative tried the place and had, pretty much, the same comment as we did - prices were high and the serving small.

We wanted to try the place, we did, and we find no reason to be going back.

We are in Vegas 5x per year and almost always Fri-Tues. We always had reservations at PP and when people came in without one, they were usually told 1 hr+ wait. Maybe it was different other days of the week. Oh well, can't go home again. I'll try the Noodle House once next month and see what happens.

Makiki, don't you think part of the long lines at the cafe is due to the coupon book all the Hawaiians get when they fly in on Boyd Vacations? I know 777 has the little menu symbols also, but it is much more convenient if your staying at Cal, to eat at Cal. Just a thought what causes those long lines? We didn't make it Feb to eat, but I did like the glass windows looking out to the casino. PP was rather dark inside.

BTW, I did send an email to the GM of Cal saying it was time to update the website and get a menu and prices on there.

 

Hi Joe. Vacations Hawaii has 4 standard charters every week. They also offer 7 day charters but not every week. Because of overlapping charters that means at any time there are close to 400 people staying at the Cal, MSS and Fremont at any time (probably a lot more, esp when more charters are in on the same day), just from these charters. Just about all of them have the coupon books so they eat at the boyd restaurants. The lines are usually long during the dining times because they all want to eat at places like Market st. café, a regular favorite with the Hawaii crowd. 777 is also available but it looks like the MSC and the buffets are the eateries most frequented by the Hawaii crowd. I hardly see long lines at 777 but I regularly see long lines at MSC. The lines are also long at the MSC when the charters first arrive, people want to settle in and go for a bite while waiting the charter to deliver their bags (usually takes a couple of hours).

Not sure about the PP but that's what one of the managers told me (about PP being not busy all the time) was one of the reasons why they got rid of the place. I think the pp was busy during the regular dinner hours but not the rest of the time. Not sure if this new restaurant will be more successful than the PP, actually reading reviews it doesn't seem likely but we'll see how long it stays open or changes to become some other restaurant (pasta pirate remake?). Since they cut into the cashier cage and also got rid of the bar I would have thought that the new restaurant would be bigger and hold more people but I'm not sure if this is the case.

I think this place was an attempt to lure in the "younger" more hip crowd that is into the "fusion" type of cuisine. Unfortunately I don't think that includes most of us from Hawaii who expect regular portions and expect to be satisfied after we finish our meal.

 

Was seriously considering trying this place on my upcoming trip, but in all honesty the reviews haven't been enough to get me there. Probably give Wazuzu a try at Encore instead.

But did you see how much they are charging for Chow Fun Noodles? $14.00 for a plate of noodles? That's nuts....

I wanna try the ox-tail stew. I also noticed they offer family plates but no info as to how much serving is on a family plate.
