Try living in a hot and humid climate for a while and then you would understand. Perhaps you would like to come visit me in the Houston area in August. LV in August is much more tolerable.

I swear I felt the same way when I was out there last summer. I had the news on every morning and it seemed like there were multiple robberies, shootings and mugging/car jackings reported every day. I don't know if things got worse or it was just the fact that I never watched the news regularly in the past years.

I think it is more of a 'dirty laundry' gets air play. Think about what gets 'not reported!'

If you live anywhere around a huge city it would be odd not to have those on-goings. All our news is about the same thing, just on a much larger scale.

LV has it's problems no doubt. Watching TV news can you give you a biased view. If you study crime maps you will see that most incidents are are centralized in a couple areas. Avoid these areas and you are fairly safe. I guess no different than any city of that size.

What are some of the better areas to buy a home?
Is there any hope for dating for a 55 y.o. Widow?
Why the stress on the concealed weapon comment?
Are there pest issues such as scorpions?

    Kari,

You will get as many opinions as responses. Much of it depends on your budget. The areas I like the most are out of my budget but isn't that always the way. Also what are your criteria you need to narrow that down. Some very nice and affordable areas are far out there away from everything. If that doesn't bother you great. There is another thread on here that has a discussion about this.

There are many resources online to research neighborhoods. I spent almost every night for months doing searches then did some driving around before contacting a realtor. We ended up in the southwest near the 215 and Rainbow. Very satisfied with what we got.

Here are some areas that are considered nice and in no particular order. I'm sure I will miss some but others will help with that.
    Rhoades Ranch
    Seven Hills
    Aliante
    Henderson (parts at least}
    Summerlin
    Southern Highlands
    Green Valley
    Anthem
    Centennial Hills

Most People try to avoid "North Las Vegas" I don't know much about it because I avoided it too.

Never saw a scorpion in 5 years myself but they do exist.

On dating I can't help much however my niece has had hard time finding the right guy after her husband died.

Here are link to a previous closed thread that discusses pros and cons. https://www.vegasmessageboard.com/forums/showthread.php?104851-advice-on-overall-best-areas-to-buy-a-new-home

    Hope this helps a little.

Summerlin and Green Valley have been most desirable for a long time. I personally wouldn't choose either, I'm not a fan of master planned communities. I have lived at Flamingo/Buffalo, Trop/Ft Apache and now live in Silverado Ranch. I loved the west side, and didn't think it could get more convenient, but Silverado Ranch has everything I could want within easy reach. I have friends moving from gated community in Rhodes Ranch, half a million dollar house and they have regular visits from SWAT because of their neighbors. It wasn't the family friendly environment they were seeking, they are moving to South Summerlin. I have friends in Centennial too, they like it. You get more for your money there.

I have three coworkers that were widowed in the past three year, all 55+ and they've since found new relationships. I don't suspect you'll have trouble dating.

I do own guns, I've open carried, but I do not have my conceal and carry. I've considered it especially after threats from disgruntled former employees, but never followed through. It's a personal decision, to each their own.

I've not had scorpions. My mom has them in Pahrump, she has service that sprays once a month. She has dogs and cat, and used to have dozens of farm animals and there was a never an incident. In Vegas, I only know them to turn up on new construction; when desert has been disturbed.

Blend of new and old(er) construction, mix of apartments and houses. Easy access to 15 and 215 so the entire valley is accessible, shaves off time to AZ & CA too. Conveniently near the airport, but little noise most planes overhead are going to Henderson airport. Shopping is well established, Galleria Mall is no more than ten minutes away. If casinos are important, there's South Point, M Resort and Green Valley Ranch nearby. Lots of parks, bike and hiking trails. Restaurants were weak when I first moved with lots of chains and places closed by 9, but it's coming around... good eats to be had now. The only negative I've found is Eastern can be extremely congested. I use Windmill (215) and Silverado Ranch (15) most often so it's not really a bother.

    Kari,

We will be in Vegas for four weeks starting about 4/12. My wife and I would be happy to share our experience on buying. Send private message if you want to meet for coffee and our trips overlap.

You must have never lived in North Carolina, 'cause lawd, the humidity really makes a difference!

In other places, people talk about hoping that it rains so that it'll "cool down." Here, the rain just makes it that much more humid and miserable.
