Although I'm sure that none of the other members of VMB would have participated in any "illegal" gaming activities, this post goes to show that places to indulge the gambling "bug" exist everywhere.

I have not ventured in to any of the establishments cited in the article, although there are 2 in my neighborhood.

I hate to admit many, many, many years ago I engaged in activity similar to this, although the venues were different. Anyone else want to admit their past sins?

Its pretty common knowledge that a lot of these "cafes" aren't Starbucks. Everything from prostitution to illegal gambling goes on in there. Been asked a couple of times to go with friends but drinking coffee while staring at tits isn't my thing and I also value my life lol.

Was it also one of those bikini cafe establishments too?

I was always curious about those underground casinos they portray on TV and movies. I would definitely check them out at least once... My friend said he knew a guy, but it ended up just being a sports book joint so I was a bit disappointed. But being in LA, we could always go to a place like Commerce "Casino" or trek out to the Native American casinos.

Yes, I believe that they were also "bikini" coffee shops.

There are slot bars in Dallas area. It says for entertainment only and you can't cash out but if you ask the attendant he will pay you in cash and reset the machines credits.. NO Table games. Just multi line slot machines and nothing you see in Vegas so I won't play them.

I've been to a couple for coffee, and they have some bars that are interesting strip clubs at night. But never went to gamble. I don't frequent them often, would hate to wear out my welcome around some of those folks lol.

I don't understand the appeal of gambling in a place like this (the appeal of liquor and scantily clad women is obvious of course). Even if there were no risk of violence, I just don't get it.

Absent regulation and open competition, we can assume the returns are terrible. Okay fine, lots of people are willing to accept terrible odds for a chance at a big win (e.g. the lottery). But, without regulation, there's some jackpot amount over which you can't have any confidence you'll get paid. Their reputation would take a hit (which is why they'll pay out smaller jackpots), but at some point the money is worth more than the reputation. Because of this you'd have to restrict yourself to games with modest but more often jackpots. But if you're odds are so crappy, this is the last thing you'd want to do! Terrible odds with low variance is just pointless.

If you really have to get your gambling fix, why not just spend that money on a bunch of lottery tickets? Still terrible odds, but at least you know you'll get paid if you win.

I suppose there is that "naughty" factor knowing you are doing something illegal? Most of these joints generally sell lottery tickets as well if I'm not mistaken.

Does a degen really need much appeal? The closest place to play sluts is about hour and half away. As far as the younger crowd, a bookie is pretty appealing in a place where sports betting is illegal.
