BEER ! Suggestions appreciated

DH and I arrive 2/9 and will be staying for a week! Yippee! We have been to Vegas several times and will have a car. We have a great relationship - he is the Designated Driver and I am the Designated Drinker! At home, I'm pretty much just a wine drinker. But, if I drink wine all day, I will be a drunken mess!

I do like beer - just don't drink it a lot. I'd like to try beer while visiting, so I'd appreciate some suggestions. Bottled or draft - what locations have your favorite beer selections. I don't like dark or heavy beer, but am open to pretty much anything else. We will be on the Strip,Downtown and at off strip locations. I'm going to take a list of your suggestions with me. Thanks, all!

 

Ok...not a beer snob here, but here's what I would suggest:
1. Warsteiner (var-schtiner). A good, light german pilsner. You'll like it (if you can find it).
2. It may be "dark" but it doesn't drink like one...and a lot of places will have it - Shiner Bock

 

Does anyone know of a place in Vegas that has beer flights? Perhaps LV2GMBL could try different beers at one of those places so he can just have tastes of different beers. I may even try it next time I'm there.

 

The yardhouse has beer flights. Tood English Pub also have a very solid beer selection.

 

When you're downtown:

777 Brewpub inside Main Street Station. You can get a sampler (aka flight) of beers there. I recommend trying their current brewmaster's reserve, which is a barley wine. It's got a nice roasted flavor. It's also 10% alcohol, so be careful or it'll knock you on your ass. Since you're not into dark/heavy beers, you may wish to have a taste of the barley wine first to see if you like it. If it's not your thing, then try the Double Down (Hefeweizen) or the High Roller Gold.

Banger Brewing. You can get a sampler (aka flight) here too. I recommend trying the El Jefe. It's a jalapeno beer, but not overwhelmingly spicy. It's actually quite smooth and it's not dark/heavy.

Pizza Rock. They have a great beer selection here. Perhaps try the Fresh Squeezed IPA (Deschutes) on tap. Either way, wash it down with pizza.

When I stayed at the Orleans, their liquor store had an excellent selection of local beers (and all the rest too). I got Death Valley Pale Ale brewed by Indian Wells Brewing co. and I was quite happy with this regional beer. I also don't recommend using the Orleans tub faucet as a bottle opener - I nearly broke it!

 

Looks like the Pub at Monte Carlo has beer flights and you can even get a two for one on MyVegas

Great suggestions so far.

I like Public House (Venetian) and Todd English P.U.B. (Crystals/Aria) on the strip and Main Street Station downtown. Looking forward to trying Yardhouse soon.

 

Though it's not quite on the strip, but a block or so east toward the High Roller wheel....The Yardhouse in the Linq has by far the best draft beer selection 'on the strip'. I recall at least a 3-4 dozen US craft brews and imports, with tasters available. Pretty solid food as well. Place gets busy so plan ahead. Great pre-game spot for a Brooklyn Bowl concert....

 

Loving your suggestions, my LV friends! I really like the idea of the beer flights. Some of the beer choices may be selected just like I choose a horse in a race. Depends on how cute the name sounds!

Also a ton of bars on Fremont East downtown, not sure which ones specifically have the better beer selections though.

 

TAG bar at the Linq resort.

175+ bottles, every beer I could reasonably think of and fifty more, for example they have all the Dogfish Head bottles, then in to imported Belgians, on to Coors Light. Great and entertaining staff, DDB odds aren't horrible either on the bartops.

777 as noted when downtown. Their in-house stuff is pretty good.

One of the few places I just got to after several trips to Vegas and regret not going there earlier.

 

If you are not a big beer drinker then the types of beers and beer places suggested here would get you pretty drunk pretty quick. If you want to "last" while drinking beer and don't like strong, dark beers then domestic would be your call IMO.. I know the beer snobs here will snicker at this suggestion but I would stick to something like Michelob Ultra which tastes good, is low on the carbs and calories and will not get you "wasted" unless you drink a whole bunch.

We don't drink beer as an all-day sustaining thing, so alcohol and IBUs and what not a concern to us from the hammered/filled perspective. But if someone needs to have his nose in a bottle or can all day, then by all means go with a low-al American-style lager or the Mexican beach beers. Just makes sense. That's why if I drink on the golf course it's usually micheladas. Unless I am with our winery pals.

Our go-to beers are Lagunitas IPA and Grand Teton Sweetgrass APA, and (Central Europe-style) pilsners. And Red Chair NWPA by Deschutes. Oh, Terminal Gravity IPA. (Yes, we like hops.)

 

As others have already pointed out there are quite a few places now that have a wide variety of beer to choose from.

The three places though I would most strongly consider are...:

Non-compable:
Yard House. Over 100 taps, and you can buy sampling "flights" for ~$10 and try several beers that may sound good to you.

Strip Casino:
TAG Lounge at Linq. Pushing 200 beers that can be comped by playing VP at the bar. Anything on the menu that is sub $9 and is a 12 oz. bottle is compable I believe. There is a strong West Coast bias in terms of quality beer here due to distribution issues. I wouldn't pick anything much east of Kansas except Delaware as all the beers are Dogfish Head beers and is a great brewery.

Off Strip Casino:
32 Degree Bar at M Resort. 96 beers on tap that once again can be comped by playing VP. Also had a great BBQ Chicken sandwich from the Vig Deli served to us at the bar as well last trip. One of the nicer off-strip casinos in terms of looks imo.

And unlike the first two menus, this menu gives you descriptions of the individual beers and as well as the abv...which will be important to factor if you plan on drinking a significant amount of beer.

As for which beers to try...

I am very biased toward IPAs like Ken and these usually aren't dark beers. And I agree that Lagunitas IPA (6.2% abv) is very solid. Sculpin IPA (7% abv) is one of my new compable favorites though. For a "strong" IPA, I really like Dogfish Head 90 min. (9% abv) as well as their normal IPA 60 min. (6% abv) I also like a standard Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (5.6% abv), which you can get at many casinos nowadays (nearly all the CET properties).

Unfortunately, I am less versed in other styles and much less adventurous. For amber ales, I like Fat Tire (5.2% abv). Wheat Beer...Sam Adams Cherry Wheat (5.3% abv). Strong Ale: Arrogant Bastard (7.2% abv). Stout (which is really dark, so you might not like it)...I like Guinness which is much smoother to drink than most stouts, imo (4.2% abv).

All these beers I listed are at the 32 degree bar, except the 90 minute IPA which is at TAG (and the Linq catalyst bar on tap).

Hope this helps...I'm looking forward to drinking several of these myself in a few weeks!

I like that the OP is thinking outside the box. That's one of the great things about travel, sipping and dining local or at least not the home way.
