Should Boyd bring back the Stardust name?

So Boyd Gaming has been absent from the strip for going on 12 years now. There is at least a lot of nostalgia for the old Stardust though a lot of it might just be romanticizing the past. If Boyd ever came back to the Strip do you think they should bring back the Stardust name? I know it wouldn't be the same but they could play the nostalgia angle for marketing.

I'm unsure how it could be done, but the Stardust "brand" must have tremendous value still.

 

Having never visited the Stardust because my parents were horrible tour guides in 2001, and I wasn't adventurous enough to visit it solo as well as all the other casinos on the strip that got shut down/remodeled between 2001 and 2011 (all the ones we did visit still stand ), I'm a bit indifferent. I would love Boyd to have a strip presence, but I really don't see it happening. Ironically, at the Blue Chip buffet in Indiana, there is a fake display cake in the dessert area that has "Stardust" decoration on it. So it could happen I suppose...

 

I went in 1994 with my parents. There is a picture of me walking towards The Sands but I don't remember it specifically. We also took a picture of the Desert Inn and a bunch of Ceaser's. We stayed at MGM Grand and I did get to visit the theme park where the Signature now stands. In one picture one of the costumed characters at the amusement park was getting a little touchy with a young BayouBengal

My souvineer that trip was a marked deck for magic trick and an LCD Jacks or Better game. I really should be better at VP by now, I've had 20 years to practice. haha

 

Nope, there was only one Stardust, let the Stardust rest in peace.

Now on the other hand, once City Center is bulldozed into oblivion, the new Hotel/Casino should be renamed "The Boardwalk".......

 

Should they bring back the name "Stardust"?

They could: they still own all the trademarks... but if they were to bring back the name they would probably only do it because they weren't able to come up with a new name.

"Ah the good ol' days of The Stardust" is really just a classic case of "absence makes the heart grow fonder" and going for the nostalgia of it all isn't something a casino really wants to go after - the younger generation won't know much of The Stardust or care about its history and those that do remember the place in its glory days are all going to be old folks in their retirement years, mostly living on fixed incomes... and nobody wants to go after that "old person who is either cheap and/or has no money" demographic.

And even if it did come back its not going to be the same old place or have any of the feel or atmosphere that it used to have. Your favorite blackjack dealer isn't going to be there anymore, they aren't going to have 3:2 blackjack at the $1 level or 9/6 JoB for a nickle at the bar...

 

I agree, but now I'm really pissed I didn't go to Stardust. Mirage (from what I can remember) wasn't outstanding for VP in 2001 either. But I do remember playing "Texas Tea" for 3 hours on a single dollar while getting wasted though... I do believe that Boyd would try to give a slightly better Strip gamble though that competitors.

My mom had a handheld 8/5 JoB with a 2000 coin royal (96.37%) game that was authentic soon after gambling became legal in Missouri. I was 14 when that happened...so I was being groomed early too.

 

My sentiments exactly, sometimes old vegas is better off remembered then re-invented.
The Aladdin while steeped in history imploded and died in its re-incarnation. Leave the poor Stardust to rest in peace.

Wynn built something better on the old Dessert Inn and Dunes property, lets let someone invent something new.

 

I found some pics online, looks like mine was 8/5 as well but paid 3000 for the royal. Was that a typical payable in 90's? I have a hard time understanding why you'd program a toy game to payout less than full pay. Was Gary Loveman in on this!?

 

I understand people may wax nostalgic for the Stardust name, but the name also has massive ties to organized crime, murders and crooked bookmaking.

"Crooked bookmaking" as opposed the the legal "creative accounting" that today's corporations are allowed to do. The 3 card monte that CET is doing is more illegal than anything the mob did. A new Stardust owned and operated by the mob would be a big hit - as long as you don't cheat they know how to treat people right. I will never happen but it doesn't hurt to dream.

Stardust had two things going for it. Organized crime ties and that glorious sign. Everything else was the same as any hotel/casino of that era.

OC is probably better left in the past. But, if in some mythical future, Boyd recreates a Stardust on the strip, it must include a faithful recreation of the sign.

 

I stayed at the old and new Aladdin and loved the new version. The name turned off people I think, and it was sold off.

Any more the names need to sound trendy and luxurious just to get people in the door.
