We moved here (from WI) in spring 2004. Bought a condo right away in the Summerlin area. Got jobs, it was tough, but we got jobs. We sold that condo, and moved to Sun City Summerlin, and now we have this house for sale.
Here is my assessment of living in Vegas.

    1. other than employment demands, neither of us go to the strip or downtown for gaming purposes.
    2. taxes on property and income are extremely low.
    3. As a Vegas resident, you are often taken advantage of my "friends" and family members who are looking for a cheap Vegas trip, or Vegas tour.
    4. Housing is easy enough to find, and reasonable for purchase, or rentals. Finding the right area of town is another question.
    5. After about 4 months, the main streets make sense and getting around gets easier.
    6. Getting a job in a casino, vs. keeping a job in a casino are 2 different issues.
    7. I regret not knowing spanish. Everywhere is spanish speaking people. Over 80% of job postings want bi-lingual.
    8. The weather is great year round. There are a few cold, rainy days, but they are few and far between.
    9. Drive in tourists or rental car tourists cause a lot of traffic accidents, and are also rude as can be on the road.
    10. Meeting people from all over the globe is interesting. but also scary.
    11. Local casinos who champion "we love locals" campaigns………lie. they love locals with big bank roles.
    12. Attending regular church services is considered weird.
    13. Still unable to tell the difference between co-eds out having a good time, or "working" girls. all dress the same.
    14. Have a conceal carry permit, and use it.
    15. Golfing is year round and great.
    16. endless top name entertainment, but, tickets are NOT cheap. Not unusual to have celebrity encounters or sightings.
    17. Don't buy or rent any property without a community pool or a private pool. A pool is a MUST have in Vegas.
    18. My arthritis never felt better while living in Vegas.

We are currently selling our beautiful home in Sun City to move closer to the kids. We figure our 10 years here is long enough and the vacation is basically over.
The politics is changing in Vegas, as there are quite a few transplants from neighboring states who are trying to impose the very social agendas they moved to get away from.
The population is increasing, but like I said, learning spanish is needed.
Would we make this move again? yes, but, we certainly would do some things differently.

Anyone who has visited Vegas in July or August would wonder what part of town has great weather then.

Very nice write up. We have talked about maybe moving to Vegas for 5 yrs or so upon retirement just for the experience. I don't think I would make it a life long thing either though.

I hope to get the best of all worlds by just living there a few months in the winter. Get away from Iowa blizzards.
I enjoy July and August in Vegas personally. We do have a private pool at our vacation home. But to me 110 in Vegas
is no worse than 95 plus with humidity in Iowa. I don't have a pool in Iowa so to me Vegas is better. Plus AC helps everywhere.

I agree with the spanish thing. I sometimes wonder even at 55 it would pay to learn it. I also see the social things changing because
of certain people moving in. Sad to me, but it is happenning everywhere. Majority doesn't necessarily rule anymore.

Best to you and your move. Hope it is all you are wanting. You can always visit Vegas now. Be that person who uses the family living there. lol

Your post is absolutely consistent with other folks I've met who've relocated to Las Vegas, particularly the pool comment! With regards to churches... I recently drove a back road (HWY 60) the 80 or so miles from Louisville to Lexington, Kentucky and am positive I saw more churches in the first 15 miles than we have in ALL of Nevada!!!

Lastly with regards to the transplants "agenda"... you're right on point my friend. Let's face it, most Nevada residents hail from somewhere else. That's what happens when you're the fastest growing state (for the most part) the last 30 years or so... but historically those who moved here liked what it was all about and offered (or didn't) and we got on about our business. No so, these days... the last in the door are becoming very vocal about their social agendas. What remains to be seen is if they carry enough clout at the ballot-box. For now, they're just "vocal".

Thanks for the write up. Very interesting to get a local’s perspective. Good info – and much of it new to this “Vegas veteran”.

Stupid...and sincere question - what "social agendas" are being referred to in a couple of the comments above?

If I had to guess based on the veiled references I'd say they mean immigration reform, gun control or other "liberal" ideas.

Funny that people move somewhere to be in a better place then want to change the way people think and behave so it's more inline with the place they just left.

OK, lived there 2 years ourselves and would like to inquire about your #11 - local's casinos.

I thought Santa Fe, Orleans, and Suncoast treated us quite well as locals. Plenty of free sh*t and granted most of it was sh*t, but we are still using some of of the free giveaways 7 years later. Plenty of free food incitements to get us into the casinos. Not healthy eating, but plenty of offers. Cheap, or free buffets, VERY cheap movies on the over 55 movie days.

Were you focused on one casino regarding that post, or you thought all casinos that targeted locals were lying to you?

    14. Certainly agree. Get properly trained and legally licensed and only if you feel comfortable. Many visitors are licensed as well but are unaware of the reciprocity laws so don't land yourself in jail.

    9. I'm a very frequent visitor and always rent a car. Six to eight visits a year, one to two weeks at a time. Never caused an accident. Never gotten a ticket nor been pulled over. I promise to continue to do the same in the future! Lead by example!

I repeated the OP's phrase to stay away from the VMB's "no politics" concerns...

I always watch the local morning news in the room and the traffic reports with the live helicopter reporters...Where exactly and why is the "Spaghetti Bowl' so frequently the main subject???.Where is everyone commutting to?

I'm trying to learn a little Spanish and I'm a good decade older than you. Other than counting to ten or so, I knew nothing - still don't know much! It's spoken fairly frequently even in Central Illinois. Social agendas have always changed over time - Nevada from 1900 to 1950 changed more than anywhere except Nevada from 1950 to 2000. Who's to say what it will look like in 2050? Whether it's a sad thing or a happy thing, is all what you make of it. I won't make any comment on your mention of "certain people". I also am unsure what you mean by majority doesn't necessarily rule anymore, except that you might not be in the majority any longer! We're here for 3 weeks in January, and don't ever plan to move here, but hope to keep visiting regularl, even if the kids and grandkids move elsewhere.

Two of my childhood friends now spend all or a large portion of their time in Vegas. One is a conservative Lutheran former rubber company department manager who spent his entire life in the same midwestern city, and the other is an overeducated liberal-minded Jew who lived mostly back East. I can discuss the evil "P" word with either one, no hard feelings.

So I, too, wonder what kind of people the original post was talking about.

Wish I could explain my comments more, but it is not what this board is about, all I can say is do not always assume you understand what was wrote.
It is best to leave everyone to their own opinions. You are correct that all a person can do is adjust to what is laid in front of him.
