I know that it's the preferred "High Roller" game and part of the allure is that you get to handle the cards, but isn't it really just a glorified version of War? Unlike blackjack, there is no "bust" so you're just playing for the highest Player or Banker hand with all extra cards to be drawn predetermined by the what the values of the initial two cards are.

Lol. War is nothing like bacc

Its a fun game where it's even better when you find a table with people betting the same side cheering. Some people don't like it because it too slow.

I understand that Bacc is always played for much higher stakes, but is it not essentially a game with pre-determined rules as to if cards will get drawn or not and the highest total wins? I know banker wins more, but you then have to pay a commission, right?

I guess the cards are predetermined. Unlike war, people jumping in and out of the shoe cannot mess up the cards. There are rules when a card is drawn unlike war where you only gets a single card.

5% commission on the bank. If you don't want to play commission try ez bacc

Playing Baccart at a table with funny people, having a good time, is an unmatched gambling experience. The slow pace, the ability to touch and bend the cards makes for a much more relaxed. It's essentially team banker vs team player, the banter back and forth is extremely fun! And due to the slow pace, people bantering,, I can usally play at a $25/table for an hour or two if I'm not too bad at choosing!

Don't want to sound racist. It's usually team Asians vs the rest. I noticed Asians tend to play more together where as Caucasians and others will bet against the table. I have played with other players who weren't asian that bet with the table. However, I have met Asians that bet against the table.

I like to play with a community table. I never bet against the table if I don't feel it. I'll just sit out. In the end for me, race does not matter. If you bet with the table your are my friend. If you bet against us, fuck you loose.

The math on Baccarat is really odd. What everyone looks for are patterns, which do appear. Randomly shuffle a single deck of cards - please try this! What are the odds that you won't have a pair together? It's 1.7% both by calculation and simulation. I've done this as a bar bet for years and gotten as many as ten pairs.

Extend that to any value. There's a limit here. Cards can only add up to ten values in Baccarat 0 through 9 but there are many ways those numbers can be added together by two or three cards (with the extra draw).

Math wise it has a less than 1% house advantage but we know from the reported results the casinos rake a 12 to 15% annual profit from Baccarat. That would be from all the games, including those with the side bets.

The few times I've played I went with the "Follow Last Bet" principle. I hit long streaks and cleaned up several times. Got my wallet emptied twice when it alternated banker and player.

At best it's a fun guessing game and unless you get at a table with somebody drunk and angry (once) it can be very enjoyable!

I agree with the original OP. While I have never play baccarat, I don't see much appeal on it. I understand that people may find it fun to pick player or banker and watch the cards come out, but no clue how this made it as THE high roller game.

It's a fun game with people, but I can't play by my self for long periods.
1 you are not fighting the dealer As you can chose either side
2 you can dictate the pace of the game
3 it's fun to squeeze the cards to check if you have won
4 gets depressing to "make the wrong" choice over and over
5 it has a low house edge. You can also sit out hands and see the cards come out.
6 number of players do not dictate the order of the cards.
It's an awesome game to ride the tail of lucky people

The roots of baccarat go way back, and it is considered a "high society" game played by royalty, and glamorized in pop culture such as in James Bond movies. The Asians, being aspirational, have adopted it as their number one game, in part due to this mystique.

There are a couple allure's of baccarat to me.

The first one being I like to watch the table and see who's winning who's losing and bet with the winner..as mentioned before baccarat is much more fun when the table is winning. I generally do not best against the table ever.

The second reason but most important reason. You can be completely drunk off your ass unable to add together numbers like you have to in Blackjack, but still able to actually play the game. Put your money on player or banker. Done. Easy game to play when drunk :)

I never understood the desire to ruin the cards. This seems very childish to me.

Don't every play Bac, but love the idea of sweating cards, at what level can you touch the cards in Vegas?

I've never understood the appeal either. The few times I've played it I thought bingo would be more exciting.

There is certainly more skill in managing 4-5 Bingo cards than playing Bacc. I've come to the conclusion that yes, for Asians there might be some 'mystique' and level of fate, but ultimately it comes down to being a brainless game that the uber rich can play, drunk off their ass if they want, and no amount of skill from a less wealthy player (e.g. in poker) can ever surpass the "balls" of throwing a bet of several hundred thousand down on the table simply "because I have money you'll never dream of, f*** you."

You can argue slots, craps, roulette are brainless games also.

I completely agree with the first part. I think the traditions and historic exclusivity behind it is a big part of the allure. I think that may partly explain why it became popular in Asia but I think there is just a general belief in luck and sense of prediction in the game that really drives it, plus just being a game where betting big is the norm. I remember when we were involved in a syndicate deal in Macau several years ago when the big building boom was happening there. We visited a bunch of these smaller "city club" casinos that the developer owned and they were just these small (but ornate) multi-level casinos that had individual baccarat rooms along the sides. Pretty much every room was occupied and they told us most of it was people playing the equivalent of 10k+ USD per hand. This was just a random weekday afternoon. Point being, as far as the aspirational aspect of it goes, Asian play has far exceeded anything anyone else plays for a while now.

For me, I've played baccarat a little over my last few casino trips and enjoyed it a bit but not much. I think it really is the type of game you need to risk a lot and bet big to enjoy, because there is nothing else really involved in the game. I can enjoy blackjack, craps, or pai gow betting nothing. Chips are just there for keeping score. Because I like the games themselves, there is some activity in them, some decision making, etc. But baccarat is a bit like a 3-reel slot for me. On its own its dull, but if its a high limit slot it may be fun just because of the stakes.
