Ok for those that know how to play the pass line, one pass line bet, two come bets, all with odds your choice, 3,4,5X or whatever. You wait for your numbers to roll, but alas here comes that nasty 7.

You're wiped out! So, you go again?

Is this table cold? Well if it is then you might want to consider going the wrong way or "Betting The Don't"

The odds of a 7 coming out are higher than any other number. You can Google the odds in a New York Second on any one of a hundred web sites.

So, if you're going on the don't pass line, if you make the come out roll, (anything but a 7 or 11) you're on your way. The odds are now in your favor.

Lets say you roll any number, a 2 or 3 is an instant winner, 12 a push. No harm no foul. You gotta LAY those odds. OK you put up 10 to get back 5, but the odds are 2 to 1 in your favor. Not only that when you have a few numbers Layed up via the don't come with Lay Odds when that 7 hits you scrape the board for a big payout.

The trick is to make that come out roll. If a 7 or 11 hits you lose, but only your initial don't come line bet. So, you don't lose your odds, because you don't have then up yet. Get it?

Jimmy the Greek wasn't wrong. The odds are very slightly in your favor. So why doesn't everyone play the wrong way? You'll have allot more money up in terms of lay odds, but the odds of hitting that 7 are in your favor. You just gotta have the stones for it.

Well, you might not be the most popular player on the table but who the hell are you playing for? If the table is cold why not go for it.

I'll never forget one time we were at Nevada Landing on the lonely Craps table, there were three people losing their ass.
I came up and put down a sizable Don't Pass bet, rolled a 3 and Voila! I then bet again and rolled several numbers that went up with Lay Odds, And then rolled a 7 and cleaned up.

The other players asked, "How did you do that?" I just smiled and said; "Just do what I do", and so they did, and we all made a bundle until the pit boss came over and closed the table on us. I shit you not.

So, if you're on a losing streak and you just can't seem to get on, Why not try the Don"t ?

Well, people play for all sorts of reasons -- table camaraderie being one of them. I personally agree with you and play Dont's about 60% of the time, depending on the table streak. Whenever I play the dark side, I also hit the DC pretty hard. When that seven comes, you're looking at a nice stack of chips. Best case scenario (which is rare) is: Don't bet, point, lay odds, DC, number(X), DC, number(Y), DC, number(Z), DC number(A), SEVEN.

I have a similar story too but it was the opposite.
Guy playing the Don't and getting his ass handed to him.
Sure he would win once in a while but he sure wasn't having as much fun as the people playing the Pass line.
Is the Don't a better bet? Yes, but only marginally.
Is the Pass more fun??? Significantly more.
If a table was full of Pass players you could tell if the table was even mildly hot.
If the table was stone cold you couldn't tell if the table was full of Don't betters or Pass players because it is usually quiet either way.
The bottom line (I said it before in other replies) is to have fun and the Pass line is more fun.
Hell, if the objective is to lose $0 then why bother gambling at all????

The only reason a cold table with Don't players is quiet is because the winning Don't players are being respectful to the Pass players.
Trust me, it is great fun to win at a cold table, don't let the quietness fool you.

It's the same as winning a huge pot in poker, you don't jump up and down and holler, but you are having the time of your life because you are WINNING!

I chucked when I read this. I do muted fist pumps under the table myself.

I have never placed a chip in the DP or DC areas since I have been playing craps. Like it was mentioned earlier table camaraderie is a big part of why I play craps. I enjoy hootin' and hollerin' and high fiving with my table mates. Sure that could happen on a table that was primarily playing the darkside but you rarely see that.

Since I began playing I have looked at the 7 as the enemy and the number I want to beat. Of course not losing your ass is important and winning is what we all want. I mean, who wouldn't want to carry a pocketful of chips to the cage to watch them spend several minutes counting out your hundreds?

I know the odds are on our side to play the don't. Hell they are too when the money line reads -235 on a sporting event. But that isn't my thing (unless I am parlaying huge ML faves) and I will either not play the game or take the 'dog.

So its the table environment and personal preference as to why I stay on the passline. If the dice aren't kind I am not anchored to the rail - I can move along and find another game.

Both sides can, and do, have fun. Like some of the other posters, I celebrate quietly when I win on the don't. Once I even played at a table where everybody bet the don't and we were all very loud with each seven out. I view the game as either side can have fun. And let's face it, its the winning that is fun, not the fact that a pass line bet hit.

I do find it interesting, however, that from my experience, pass line bettors tend to be much more bitter than don't bettors. I have seen both sides happy when they win and disappointed when they lose. But I have never seen a don't bettor bitter at the pass line bettor when they win. I have frequently seen (and written about on here) pass line bettors that are bitter toward the don't bettors when there is a seven out.

    Good point on the bitterness.

While I have seen some celebrating amongst darksiders on a right side table...it is rare. Probably 5-10 times in the five or so years I have been playing. A couple times I have taken pleasure in felting them while shooting (one dude was openly taunting me...so I'd hit a point and then just turn and smirk).

However most of this occurred at non-Vegas casinos. People seem to sweat the money more at those places.

I am easygoing and know the losses will come so there's zero point in being bitter or an ass to people who win. And being in Vegas means entertainment and enjoyment so no time to waste on being salty!

No doubt there! Craps is a fun game but all and all its how you want to enjoy your money? Are players bitter when someone wins in Bj? Betting the don't doesnt affect your odds at all and if you lose you were losing either way. Think about it this way.... If half the table bet pass and the other don't then the casino makes no Money and the players share it all. Like playing poker without a house cut

I always wondered how the term "right" and "wrong" players came about. Why is it "right" to play pass and "wrong" to play don't? How did the term "darkside player" come about?

I guess saying you are a "against" (the 7) or "for" (the 7) player is not as cool or chic as the above terms, although in my opinion it seems more accurate.

But in keeping in stride with the thread subject, I've seen darkside players lose their ass. The fact of the matter is both hot and cold tables are not as common as CHOPPY tables. These tables are the more frequent ones and brother, when a choppy table prevails, everybody loses.....

    Except the casino.:evillaugh

So what makes a table hot, or cold?
A table where everyone is yelling and screaming, is hot??? So, I buy-in and begin playing, next six shooters go PSO...Hmmm...
A table where everyone has long faces and bored looks, is cold??? So, I buy-in and begin playing (The Don't), and the next shooters each hold the dice for 20 minutes each...Hmmm...

Best advice, Play HOWEVER you want to get maximum enjoyment; whatever cash you're turning in to chips, expect never to see it again, and go on.

even on cold tables I have lost playing the darkside.
usually because I play a few don't come bets also.

without a large bankroll you can be wiped out in 1 orbit at a cold table.
    point, 10, 10, seven
    point, 4, 4, seven

max lay on the Don't come, if the shooter knocks one of them down, you wont win enough on the 7 to make up the difference.

Years ago I was walking through Paris and came across a table with one guy standing there and a pile of chips, nearly $6K. I figured it must be a hot table, in my ignorance. I bought in for a measly $300 or so and played the pass line. The other guy was a wrong bettor! He wouldn't throw the dice. I lost several points and was under $100 when my point was 4. He jumped with glee as he was up probably $14K by now. I think he bet $2K on the don't and $12K as odds which was pretty much his whole stack of chips.

    I hit my point.

Of course he blamed me! I told him I was playing against the casino, not him. Greed will get you every time.

In the subsequent years I play wrong more often than right. In and out for a few rolls if it looks like the table is cold. Craps is a very streaky game. It is indeed much more fun to be on the right side when somebody's on a 20 minute roll. I've done that only once in my life personally but I've been part of several. Are we there for fun or money though?

Can someone provide me a brief explanation on this? I think I understand, but want to make sure. I do play the DON'T occasionally, but not the numbers. So let's say the point is 4 - I then, say, lay DON'T on the 6 and the 8 and if they don't come before the 7 I win both those bets?

EDIT - nevermind, I figured it out. On the DON'T bet you win the inverse of the COME (e.g. need to put $10 on 10 and 4 to win $5).

lol. Tim, this makes me chuckle because whenever someone walks up to me and asks if a table is hot, I usually respond "its room temperature". And I'm sure I come off as a dick when I say that, but truly I say it because I don't know what qualifies a table as "hot" or "cold" either

As a smart ass Physicist the proper term is the room and table are both "ambient temperature!"

Let them stew on that for a few alcohol fogged moments...

The response from them would probably be something that had to do with the sleeping pills

    "Hows the table?"

    "Its ambient temperature"

"No...I didn't take any ambien last night, why?"
