    My Trip Report

    Players: Hubby (57)
    BlackJack Lady (54)
    Austin TX
It’s been awhile since the Hubs and I took a vacation to Vegas alone, but nobody else wanted to go so off we went. Having spent the last year planning and sewing for my daughter’s wedding which is in April of 2015, not to mention pinching the pennies, going through a buy out at work where my job was in question and dealing with the additional stress of having to accept the fact that I now have to use a walker to get around we definitely needed a break.

Found really cheap air fare on Allegiant, $398.00 round trip for 2 including 2 checked bags and with each of us having a 3 night stay free room offer at the Plaza we were booked! Because I travel with a Mobility Scooter, I immediately called Allegiant to inform them of this and to ask about seating as I had read on the board that if you don’t buy seating you might end up in different rows. I have to have assistance walking so we have to sit together and I require an aisle seat. The clerk assured me that we would be seated together within the first 4 rows and the assistance was noted on my reservation and they added the scooter to hubby’s reservation. I was instructed to arrive at the airport at least 2 hours early and to check in at the counter. Good we’re all set.

    Day 1 Sunday, 11/16
    TRAFFIC
Wake up, get the last minute packing done, eat breakfast and head to the airport. We arrived over 2 hrs early as requested. We get to the counter and check the bags and there is a sign that if they print the boarding passes, there is a 5.00 per pass charge. Um excuse me, I was told Not to check in online so I didn’t print boarding passes… well we are in row 6 and 7 opposite sides of plane and I’m in a center seat, he’s in a window seat. Sorry guys this isn’t going to work. After a few minutes we are now together in Row 8 – not quite what was promised but good enough and no charge for the boarding passes. Get through security and off to our gate with no problems. To our surprise, they start boarding the plane over an hour before takeoff. Fine by me, the sooner we get out of here, the sooner we’re in Vegas right? Wrong – although we left about 10 minutes early, we were informed there would be a headwind and would delay the flight about 15 minutes. The flight was pleasant and we spent most of the time talking to the guys in front of us and our seat mate, two of which were brothers and lived in Vegas. It made the time pass quickly and sure enough, we landed about 5 minutes after our scheduled landing time of 2:48. It’s off to get the bags, then to rental car.

After many reservations, constant checking and rebooking we ended up with an intermediate car through Payless for $123.00 for the week fees included. We had reserved the Ford Fusion, but they were out of those and the only thing in our size was a KIA. Hubby was in the military and has a hard time driving anything labeled KIA (for non military Killed In Action). The clerk offered to upgrade us for “only 10.00 a day” because he didn’t feel the trunk room would accommodate the scooter. Nope, not paying more, we’ll manage. Well he “upgraded” us for free to a full size Nissan Altima. It had a couple of dings but it was comfortable and got us where we needed to go. Also there was no pressure sales about the insurance. Oh and they were not warning people about the strip being closed due to the Marathon. Thank goodness I had read about that on here before we got there. Prepared in advance we took 15 to downtown and arrived at The Plaza at about 4:00 pm. There was some traffic on the freeway but not terribly bad yet.

Muddled through the detours and lane closures due to construction on Main Street, found valet and parked the car. Found our way through the casino to the front desk and there was no waiting to check in. We had reserved a smoking, handicap accessible shower room and the sweet girl at the desk let us know that our room would be non- smoking but if a smoking room opened up later in the week they would move us – not a problem, we don’t smoke in the house so it’s good. Assigned room 640 in the South Tower, get up there and oops, it has a bath tub, not a shower. I can’t step over the edge of a tub. Call down and get that straightened up, Bell man says he will go get the new keys for us to wait here. Now we are in room 840, still non- smoking, but this one has a shower so it will work. Room is pleasant, plenty of room to get around in and room for the scooter as well. Nice view from our window is a plus too. (Got a pic of the view but not the room – sorry)

We’ve got show reservations at 8 at the old LVH/Westgate to see a Neil Diamond impersonator so we need to grab something to eat and head out. Decide to give Hash House a try. Jeeze their burgers are HUGE. Hubs got a full size and I got the baby burger which was more than enough. Pretty Tasty. By the time we finished eating, it was nearly 6 pm. Because of traffic we decide to go ahead and head over to Westgate. 100_2544.jpg 100_2545.jpg

OMG – Traffic was HORRIBLE!!! We tried to get back on the freeway and must have zigged when we should have zagged because we ended up on Canal and that brought us right back to Main Street. Spoke to one of the traffic cops and he said we needed to take 15 to Spring Mountain Rd and then make our way to Desert Inn. Hubby questioned this as the Westgate was on the other side of the strip, but the officer assured us this was the way to go. NOT – Spring Mountain was blocked at the Strip as we knew it would be. Traffic was diverted into the TI and Mirage Parking. It took over ½ hour to get through that nightmare. We tried to get back on the freeway but ended up in a residential area. Turned around and finally found Spring Mountain Rd again. This time we went left, and ended up on Industrial. Map showed it went through to the freeway. NOPE it dead ended in an industrial park. Turned around and finally got back on the freeway. Took 15 to 95 and took the 1st exit after the strip. We finally got to Westgate at 8:10, got our vouchers exchanged and were seated at the show just as the curtain went up. HOLY MOLY WHAT A NIGHTMARE! Guess it was a good thing we left early. There should be better signage and more clearly marked detours. After the show getting back downtown was a lot easier with only a couple of minor detours.

Rob Garret as Neil Diamond put on an enjoyable show. Hubby rated him 6/7 out of 10. He wasn’t as good as Jay White, who we saw at Riviera a few years ago. Got the tickets on KSHP shopping show for $22.00/pair so it was ok for the money. We made it back to the Plaza and sat down to play some BlackJack at 11 pm. And yes, the scent was strong and burned my eyes for a few minutes but then I got used to it. Curtis was right, my scooter fit right up to the table with no problems so I was able to play even though there was no low table. Awesome! Hubby and I count coup on each other tracking our Black Jacks per session and trip. Our buy in was $200.00 each and we played till 1 am, with good drink service and the score was: BJL 15 blackjacks, up $57.00, Hubby 6 blackjacks, -$19.00. Not bad for our first night. Up to bed as it’s been a long day.

    Day 2, Monday 11/17
    Happy Anniversary
We both slept in this morning till 10 am, which is unusual for Vegas. Guess that means the bed and pillows were comfortable. We spent some time unpacking (we usually do this when we check in but due to the traffic and time restraints yesterday we didn’t bother) got dressed and headed over to the Golden Nugget for breakfast. We had a Landry’s gift card so decided to eat at Claim Jumpers. Food was good, nothing special. When I ordered my hot tea the waitress asked if I would like milk with it. Hubby was impressed as that is not a normal question when ordering hot tea in the U.S. Because we had a $50.00 gift card and knew that we wouldn’t be using it again I decided to splurge and get the breakfast Strawberry Mojito. YUCK! It was so strong with the mint that it was bitter and undrinkable. I sent it back and it was taken off of our total. We paid with the gift card and asked if we could apply it to the tip as well. She asked and yes that was ok. We left a generous tip (over 20%) to wipe out the balance.

We stopped at Tix4tonight to pick up Di Vinci tickets, wanted to get the HUGO Cellar reservations as well but they can’t sell them at the 4Queens location due to conflict of interest. Then to Walgreens for some supplies on our way back to Plaza, then picked up the car and headed over to Venetian. NO TRAFFIC! Walked over to Casino Royal to the Tix4tonite location to get the Hugo Discount and reservation. Got in the VIP line, Yes we can make them for Wednesday night. Perfect. Thank you $6.00 for a 25% discount and we’re done. Back to the Venetian for the day. The Di Vinci exhibit was very interesting and normally you aren’t supposed to take pictures. Darn, I wanted to show them to my daughter who was a History Major. The guy at the desk responded with oh in that case go ahead and if anyone questions me just tell them I had special permission for a school project. Oh ok, Thank you very much.
    20141117_151505.jpg 20141117_154307.jpg 20141117_155548.jpg 20141117_155851.jpg
After spending about 2 hours in the exhibit, we decided to head up to the Canal Shops to grab a bite to eat. We had several options to choose from with coupons from the board (THANK YOU Letsgotovegas) and decided on Bella Panini.
Food was pretty good. My SIL had mentioned that Carlos from TLC’s Cake Boss now had a location in Las Vegas and it was at Venetian so after we ate we wondered off to find it. Boy you have to be determined to find this place as it is off the beaten track down a long hallway. Place was packed. We decided to just get one of the mini cakes to celebrate our anniversary. It was a chocolate concoction that was so rich we could only eat 2 bites each. It took us until Friday morning to finish it but it was good and didn’t go stale on us so no problems.

Back downstairs and still have some time to kill before seeing Rock of Ages. Lost $40.00 on slots in about 20 minutes.
Okay, I’m bored and Hubby is delighted that I’m almost “cured” of my slot addiction. We head over to get in line for the show, Rock of Ages. Tickets purchased via special from BestofVegas for $65.00 each. Perfect seats. The show is slightly different from the movie but well done. Several of the Cast members had excellent voices and the whole thing was very entertaining. At the end, we were bombed with Glitter Confetti by one of the cast members and Hubby was covered in the stuff. It made his leather jacket look like it was covered in bling. I popped off to him so he started strutting around like he was a drunk English Rock Star. Too Funny

Made it back to Plaza and to the BlackJack table by 11:30. Another $200 buy in each. Had a good time with the dealers. One guy made a couple of errors but he was not rude when questioned and verified with the Pit Boss. First, when I had a Black Jack and he had and Ace showing I asked for even money…Nope, no even money, What? Since When? Let me check and then apologized as I was right. Paid me and again apologized. Later another lady sat down at the table and asked about surrender. He allowed it. Whoa this changes the game. Then dealer switch, and next time the lady wants to surrender she’s told no. What? He told us it was ok. Pit Boss is again called over and nope, not on this table, only on another game. Apparently the previous dealer was confused as he is used to dealing Liberal 21 I think they called it and it has different rules. It’s now 2 am and time to call it a night. Score: BJL 15 BlackJacks, + $30.00, Hubby 15 BlackJacks -$104.00

    JERKS

Another restful night of sleep. Woke up around 9 am, got the morning routine underway and headed towards Mandalay Bay for Brunch. Found the MLife desk, got our BOGO buffet and free Shark Reef Passes thanks to My Vegas. Buffet food was ok – don’t get why people think it is the best in Vegas. It was food, nothing really bad, nothing really great. We got there just as they were clearing breakfast and putting out lunch. I got breakfast, but Hubby ended up with lunch food.

Headed over to Shark Reef and had a pleasant time. The architecture is really neat. The whole area looks like an ancient city that has sunk into the sea. Saw some creatures we had never seen before including a Komodo Dragon.

After our tour, we found my favorite slot machine. Triple play. YAY!!!! Well it took all of 11 minutes to lose 180.00 in that damn machine. Hubby just sat there and shook his head at me. Yeah, I know better but I love slots. You can’t put $3.00 on the table and win $500.00 or more at Black Jack. Apparently I can’t do it at slots either LOL!

Took the tram over to Excalibur, then the walkway to Tropicana. WOW it looks great! We were really surprised at the makeover. Got my players card and a $10.00 match play. As we were leaving I put $10.00 and the match play down at an empty table. I got a 17, Dealer had a 6 showing and busted. Walked out with $30.00. Sweet!

We had our Anniversary dinner reservations at Hugo’s @ 5:00 pm so we headed back to Mandalay and to Plaza. Stopped in and say Hello to Curtis, who was very friendly and made sure that we were enjoying our stay. Said he is working on getting the air freshener/scent changed because of all the complaints. Hopefully something will be done soon as it is a real drawback for Plaza. Our dinner at Hugo’s Cellar was EXCELLENT. The service was more than we expected and the food was perfection. Our dinner included bread, butter shaped like a rose, salad prepared at tableside to order, lemon sorbet, Chateaubriand and Lobster for 2, mixed vegetables, tomato stuffed with wild rice and red potatoes and a bottle of Los Voscos cabernet . We had planned to order the cherries jubilee for dessert but the chocolate strawberries, figs, and apricots, was just enough. Neither of us could eat another bite. After the 25% discount our bill was just under $200.00 with tip. A little expensive but we felt the splurge was well worth it.

Got back to the Plaza around 7 pm for another Black Jack session. We played for a few hours but just couldn’t seem to get the rights cards. If I had 19 dealer drew to 20 or 21. At one point I had 19, Hubby had 20 and the dealer drew for a 6 card 21 using 3 aces. A new Vegas saying manifested itself tonight “need snow tires” meaning just can’t get any traction. Dealers tonight were fun and entertaining but the night was put on the downside when THE JERK showed up. He walked up and put 2 or 3 purples on 2 hands, won one, lost one. Walked away from table, then back up and 2 more hands, neither he nor his girlfriend ever sat down. At one point he had 1 purple on 1 hand and 2 on the other. Dealer had a low card showing and he wanted to double both hands. He asked the pit boss for a marker and it was denied. He then put the game on hold for over 30 minutes while he made phone calls and finally came from the cage with a bundle of $100.00 bills. Waved them to the pit boss and wanted them to “mark” the bet without pulling out any money. Argued with the boss that it COULD be done. Got nasty when they wouldn’t do it, started pointing out that he was a lawyer who knew gaming law…blah blah blah. Then he started giving the dealer a hard time when she was checking each of the Hundred’s as is her job. They just came from your cage etc. etc. Finally a boss said it was ok, dealer didn’t have to check each bill. After his bet was finally placed (we’d been twiddling our thumbs for nearly an hour at this point, he attempted to apologize to us for holding up the game by blaming the pit for the delay. I don’t even know if he won or lost his hands. He might have played another hand or two but I really don’t remember. I don’t like being around obnoxious people and he was downright rude to our poor dealer. He did get up and move to the next table and Hubby remarked rather loudly that the guy was being a Jerk and she shushed him for fear that she would get in trouble because he was a friend of the owner so they had to put up with it. That is just wrong! I don’t care who you are or how much money you have there is never a reason to treat other people as if they don’t matter. You don’t yell at people for doing their job. While we were playing, Jerk started raising his voice at the other table, snapping at the pit boss and was back on the phone again. I don’t know what the problem was but he wasn’t happy at all. One of the bosses walked away saying we’re done. At that point we’d had enough and decided to call it at night at 12 pm. As we got up, Hubby stated “Thanks for ruining our anniversary”. Walked away down $54.00 with 20 blackjacks and Hubby was down $10.00 with 23 blackjacks.

    More Traffic
Woke up around 9 again. Made it to Main Street just in time to still get breakfast before they closed and started the lunch change over. It took us a bit longer to get there because there was no place to cross Main Street. We had to back track to Cal and use the inside walkway. Breakfast was good but felt a bit rushed. No big plans today, just hanging around doing what we felt until our show at 6:30 pm at Harrah’s. After breakfast we wandered around MSS and I saw a $5.00 2 deck pitch game. Okay we’ll play. Only bad rule is you can’t double after splits. Oh well we played for over 4.5 hours and Hubby walked away even with 17 blackjacks and I was up $100.00 with 17 blackjacks. And we had fun.

Nice way to spend time, doing what we love to do in Vegas. As we were walking back to Plaza I commented that this was one of the most relaxing Vegas trips we’d had. Nothing scheduled except a couple of meals and shows. We were doing what we wanted when we wanted. Guess I’ll have to think twice before asking others if they want to go with us in the future. Anyway back to our day. Decided we were a little hungry so stopped at the pizza place at Plaza. I like the pizza, Hubby said it reminded him of the stuff they used to get at the rec center on base. Reminded me of a place we used to eat pizza when I was a kid. After eating we headed over to Harrah’s for Million Dollar Quartet. Again traffic was horrible. Can’t understand the fools who block the intersection so that no one from the cross streets can get through on their green light. We were starting to wonder if we were going to make it in time. We did by the skin of our teeth. Whew! . The usher’s weren’t happy about our seats as they were not accessible. Not my fault, I called the box office after purchasing my tickets via special on Travel zoo for 45.00 each, because accessible were not available on line and was told it would be taken care of when I arrived at the show. They got us seated and but acted put out. Didn’t keep us from enjoying the show. The show was great. The actors did a really good job of impersonating Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee and their voices were pretty good as well. Took this picture on our way out as a joke because we’ve often teased about winning the lottery then hitting Vegas .
    20141119_201108.jpg

After the show we were supposed to eat Bellagio buffet on a My Vegas bogo but neither one of us was hungry enough to justify such a big meal so we headed back downtown. Ending up eating at Dupar’s. Food was good and reasonably priced. Decided we enjoyed playing BJ at MSS earlier so we headed back. Sat down around 9:30 at a table with another couple and they turned out to be really fun. At one time both of us girls needed to go to the ladies room so we left together. As it turned out while we were gone the guys hit a hot streak. When we got back they wouldn’t let us back in until the shoe was done. Hubby hit 5 BJ’s while I was gone! The rest of the night when the cards would turn, they would tell us to go to the bathroom! Hubby kept telling me to drink more to “prime the pump”. We ended up needing a break a second time and sure enough they started winning again. Even the dealer at the next table told us that they weren’t going to let us sit back down. Jeeze guys, why don’t ya’ll go to the bathroom and let us win? They finally did but we didn’t get the lucky streak that the guys did. At midnight it was her birthday and she was drinking so much that she couldn’t add her cards up. We played for hours and then the other couple left. Hubby was up $100.00 so he cashed out and had me play solo against the dealer. I lost 100.00 so it evened out. We left around 3 am with the Blackjacks tied at 9 each.

    Murder

Today was another laid back day. Our plan was to see some of the new places downtown which is what we did. Walked over to El Cortez as we’ve never ventured there before. Looked nice to us and we’ll defiantly be playing there sometime in the future.
    20141120_134143.jpg 20141120_141531.jpg

Walked around a bit and found The Market. Got a couple of sandwiches from the deli and they were GOOD. Then we headed to Downtown Grand to check it out. We were going to play for a bit, but they have a foot rail on the table that prevented my scooter from being able to get close enough. So we headed back to Freemont Street.
    20141120_131255.jpg 20141120_142102.jpg

Decided to play at 4 Queens. Had a couple of awesome dealers. Played for about 3 hours then it was time to head to the D for Marriage can be Murder. Left the table with 9 BJ’s each and Hubby up $80.00, me up $5.00.

Marriage can be Murder is hilarious. We were laughing so hard through most of the show that we couldn’t write down all the clues and details to win the contest. The food was good too! And they let you take pictures during the show as well (if you’re not laughing too hard to snap a few.) They take the time to make the guest part of the show, Hubby was selected to be a pall bearer and was also questioned as a victim. They called him “Father Time” and had a picture of said character up on the screens while he was being talked to. At one point our Hostess said he’d been married a lot and they played All my exes live in Texas. A very entertaining show and meal.

    20141120_182813.jpg 20141120_184315.jpg

We headed back to the Plaza for our final night of BlackJack. So far it has been a good week. Dealers tonight were full of spirit and a lot of fun. However Hubby just couldn’t get any good cards. We played for several hours before calling it a night. Hubby ended down $200.00 with 16 Blackjacks and I was up a whole 7 dollars and 18 blackJacks.

We headed up to the room and counted all of the .50 silver. We had $96.00 worth so between the 2 of us we had 192 blackjacks over the week. That’s the most silver we’ve ever collected
    20141121_010808.jpg

Hubby decided that much coinage was too heavy to deal with on the flight back so he cashed them in on our way to check out Friday morning. Pout Pout Vacation is over.

Got the car turned in and to the airport 2.5 hrs early to check in. This is where more jerks come into play. When we got to the counter the attendant was very rude. Again they had us in separate rows. Got us seated together in Row 12 and when I asked if there was anything closer he replied “if you wanted closer you should have gotten here earlier” . Excuse me, I was told to check in 2 hrs early and I’m here 2.5. “Well, there are people who check in a lot earlier than that”. Okay we’ll deal with it but it is not what I was told when I purchased my tickets. So much for customer service.
Got seated okay and then our seat mate arrived as one of the last passengers, as she walked past me, slapping me in the face with her bag, her traveling companion from the row in front of us told me to just move over and let the other girl have the aisle seat. I politely explained that I was unable to do that and she insisted, Yes, it’s okay you can move. NO, I CAN’T. Got my cane down, I moved, Hubby exited and the gal got the window seat. People, please watch your bags, backpacks and other carry items as you walk down that aisle. I spend most of my time while the plane is being boarded leaning into my husband’s seat to avoid being hit on the head or slapped in the face with stuff. Flight was a bit bumpy due to weather. At one point, I needed to use the facilities, I checked the sign and it was not occupied so I stood up to make my way to the front. As I did so the flight attendant caught my eye, put up her hands in a stop signal, shook her head no and pointed to the rear of the plane. I questioned her with my face and she again put up the stop with one hand and emphatically pointed to the rear of the plane while shaking her head no. Just great. We got front seats so I would be as close to the RR as possible and now I have to use the one at the rear? WTF? Well hubby helped me to the rear, at one point I was thrown off balance, ended up bruised and in tears, and severe pain by the time I made it back to my seat. Several passengers offered me seats or inquired as to my well being. On the way back I notice they are letting people use the front facilities. Now I’m really confused. I’m now in muscle spasms and hubby has to call for water so I can take some pain meds and muscle relaxers. When a different attendant that the one who stopped me brought the water, we inquired as to why I was required to use the facilities at the rear of the plane, it was explained that one of the cockpit crew was using them and that passengers are not allowed up front during that time. OK, I understand the new rules but why wasn’t I signaled to wait a minute or two? That would have been much easier to deal with than what I was put through. After we landed, we asked the attendant who caused the problem why she sent me to the rear of the plane. Her excuse, well I wasn’t going to shout 12 rows and I was hoping you would just sit down and wait. Sorry, I wasn’t given a choice . I had to use the restroom, and you indicated that I COULD NOT use the one in front, for all I knew it was broken as you never indicated that I just needed to wait a bit. She never even apologized. We reported this to the desk after we left the plane and I was instructed to file an In Flight Incident Report. I called the next day to do so but was told I had to do it via email. I did so and in response, received a “we’re so sorry this happened and the proper personnel have been notified. Thank you and we look forward to having you fly with us again” email. Yeah, don’t think that’s going to cut it. Allegiant is not on my list of will do business with again.

In spite of the trip home, we had a good time and look forward to going back in a year or so. Came home with a bit more than we took to play on and total vacation was under 1000.00 for airfare, shows and meals so this is definitely a “WIN” trip.

I wondered how Rob Garrett compared to Jay White. We saw Jay at Riviera several times and really enjoyed his show. I also really enjoyed Million Dollar Quartet. Happy Belated Anniversary; sounds like you had a fun trip.

Thanks for correcting that first name for me...I thought to myself that Brad Garrett impersonating Neil Diamond would be an interesting sight! :evillaugh

    Good detailed report!

Thanks for the report. Always love downtown trips and sounds like Blackjack is your game of profit this trip.
