Good for Seattle and St. Paul! If I can give up Chief Wahoo, others can show some sensitivity as well. Wonder how they're doing on this front in -er- Washington?

It actually makes sense to me and I don't have a problem with it.

Oh, I don't have a problem with it, but perhaps the new name needs a little PR help.

I think the Seattle City Council has been smoking the legalized weed.

I suppose the only thing I don’t understand is why it must be an either/or type of thing. Certainly, everyone knows that there were indigenous peoples here long before the Europeans arrived. And honoring and remembering their cultures and achievements is something I don’t think any of would have any qualms with.

But no one with the capacity for rational thought can argue that the arrival of Columbus and his ilk has to rank up there among the most significant historical events ever. Is it so crazy that we have a day to commemorate that?

Seattle recently elected a council member that ran as a Socialist. During the Boeing and Machinist's Union talks last winter she was urging the workers to take over the factories and start building buses and trains, rather than weapons of war. I'm not sure who is going to buy all these buses and trains but I guess she'll worry about that later?

I'd be in favor of more holidays that commemorate human achievements and fewer to honor war-making and religious observances. Exploration and discovery would qualify. Just don't make that day about that one man. I wonder, though, if it has occurred to anybody to ask the indigenous people how they would feel about recycling that particular day.

They look down upon Columbus because he brought diseases to the new world and treated the locals poorly. Although he didn't treat them any worse than they were treating each other.

Oh and keep in mind, this is the same city that's very proud of it's statue honoring Stalin.

Someone else doing something bad is not an excuse for everybody to do whatever they like. Anyway, the deliberate spread of disease is more the issue than something accidental. That came later.

Stalin? Really? There's one of Lenin that I've heard about. Why would anyone anywhere honor Stalin? Maybe a few radical Hitler haters might- you know, real nut jobs.

Yeah - I see what you mean. Indigenous Peoples' Day doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Besides, most of us have gotten used to saying Native American.

It will always be Columbus Day. One of several Federal holidays whereby, if you played your cards right, a gov't worker could get 11 days off for the price 3 days annual leave. We worked 4 9's and 4 9's and an 8. If your Friday off fell in the same week as the Monday holiday, you could take 3 days annual leave and be off 11 straight days.
