Arrive at Bellagio early this past Saturday. After checking in I sit down with my wife to play 3 card poker. While she loves the game I find it boring and a money sucking waste of time. So start playing and 30 minutes later I hit a straight flush and two hands later three of kind. I'm up about 3k and stupidly think this trip might turn out to be successful. Stupid me. Left last night minus that 3k and much more. I think when I return in October I'm going to intentionally lose for awhile in a desperate attempt to change my luck. I couldn't win at anything. Blackjack? Nope. Three times in 2 hours the dealer matches my blackjack besides the innumerable 21s I experienced throughout my stay. Craps? Nope. It was one bottomless money sucking pit. I wanted to grab the stick and poke someone's eyes out. Maybe mine. In a final desperate attempt for salvation I gave up all my pride and manhood and played Sex in the City slots . I swear those women in the were laughing at me as they ate my money faster than my dogs eating their milk bones.

I hate Vegas. Except I can't stay away.

Maybe not in this case, sounds like you might have had a bad run of luck, but sometimes with these "did my winning early jinx the rest of the trip?" questions you have to look if the problem wasn't that winning early caused you to play and bet differently.

Like one friend I was in Vegas with he likes playing 3 Card Poker and Blackjack and on one trip we were there he had some great luck the first night playing his normal around $10-25 per hand that by the end of the night he went to around $50 per hand and wound up around $100 per hand.

The next night he kept on betting at $75-100 per hand but wasn't as lucky as the night before, but that didn't stop him or get him to go back to his normal betting habits for the rest of the trip. We were there 2 more nights for the convention and by the end of the trip he was losing quite a bit of money, but he was still betting in the $75-100 range that he was when he had the big wins the first night.

So in his case the winning at the start of the trip did cause him to lose so much money, but it wasn't because he was really losing any more than usual, but that the amounts he was losing were more than usual.

I was pretty consistent with my bet amounts but I could see people falling into that habit. If anything I probably chased the losses too much thinking that my fortunes would change. Even with the loss I/we still had a great time. Enjoyed some great food, time at the pool and visited a couple casinos that we had never been to before.

I usually get off to a slow start on a trip. Not necessarily a bad start, but my wins early in a trip are usually pretty small. I don't buy into the winning early jinx though unless it does change the way you play. I definitely wouldn't lose on purpose though because what happens if your luck is bad when you start trying to win? Personally, I'd prefer to be up $3k on my first day because you have the option of putting that money back to take home with you if you want. You don't have any options with money you don't have.

I want to be up early for once on a trip. I am usually treading water and in a hole to start off. If I were to be up early I would have an even better time

It sounds mental, but I hate winning early. I just know it'll be a disaster later. Hey ND80, that when you graduated? Class of '87 myself. Stanford Hall

It probably makes a difference too, whether you're just "up" early, or you make a big score early. And how much "up" is in relation to your normal bankroll/loss budget.

The way you described it, you had a string of good luck followed by bad luck, but you didn't change your bets.

On my last trip, I hit a slot for $12k on the morning after I arrived. For me, that's a huge hit. I wasn't even tempted for a second to play higher for the rest of the trip, because that hit basically represented 2 free trips. But if it had been $2k or $3k, I probably would have been more aggressive the rest of the trip, who knows how that would have turned out, but if I had ended up losing it slowly over the course of the rest of the trip, it would have sucked.

Instead, I had a $12k check sitting in the safe for the remaining 12 days. It was awesome. Also my first winning trip out of 12. Shit, after that sentence, I think I need to put $100 on boxcars next trip.

Have a plan when you get there.

I press when up and back down the bet when I am getting beat up. It limits losses and can make winning trips huge. Have a progression for when you are up and a regression for when you are down.

    Example
    Winning Progression
    1 unit win
    1 unit win
    2 unit win
    2 unit win
    3 unit win
3 unit loss BACK TO BASE BET

    Losing Regression
once I lose 3 in a row, I cut my base in half, another 2 back in half, WIN, back to base bet

Obviously it is not foolproof but it helps.

I do similar. But if I lose three in a row, I double my base. If I lose three more in a row, I double that.

    Yes it is.

Looks like a good strategy. I'll use that in October.

Big wins are rare so I will happily take them when even they appear. Early, late or in the middle of the trip.

Amen to that! And with my bankroll, if I could make myself, I would put half up to take home, or at least save for a last day shopping spree!

Last trip I had almost the perfect progression:
    1st Session - Even
2nd Session - Even (always good to not start in the hole)
    3rd - Big Win
    4th - Small loss
    5th - Big Loss
6th - Small loss (almost back to even but still up overall but 3 losing sessions in a row)
    7th - big win -
8th - small win - overall big win for the trip.

I say almost perfect (obviously all winners would be perfect) because I started out even (always a good thing), then was playing with house money so the losers were not that big of a deal but got close to the "fuck I have almost given it all back stage" to ending with 2 winners and a winning trip.

This past trip was brutal. Won $350 playing video poker during the first couple hours. Proceeded to get absolutely CRUSHED for the next three days. Didn't change my playing style at all (2x$25 blackjack, $10 craps with occasional presses on the 6 and 8, and $1 9/5 JoB), and I just couldn't catch a break. I don't think I had a single winning session after that first one.

Lol...a few years back, the home games we played in were raked. The player base was small...we basically had the same 9-10 guys playing from 7pm until the sun came up. There would be one or two clear winners and everyone else would be losers. Sometimes, you just can't beat time.
