Default Dealer's News

There's a newsletter called the Dealer's News that is published in Las Vegas each month and is distributed throughout the dealers breakrooms at most casinos in town. I doubt if there's anything wrong with letting people in on some tidbits from this month's edition as long as I cite my source, which of course, is the Dealer's News (February 2010 edition), Ron Saccavino editor. PM me for subscription information.

In each edition he lists about a dozen casinos in town and gives a rundown of the tokes the dealers received in a random week the previous month (dealers from the various casinos email him the info). There's also random tidbits of gaming information, letters to the editor, etc. etc.

Here's some decent information from this month's edition:

*This month he ran down what dealers made in total wages/tips last year at various casinos. They are:
- Flamingo $45,600
- Mandalay $71,000
- MGM $65,000
- Casino Royale $29,000
- Venetian $62,000
- Monte Carlo $52,000
- Stratosphere $30,000
The above info is what the FULL-TIME dealers make at those places. Obviously the part-time/extra-board dealers (who make up a large % of the dealers at each place) made less than what's listed. So if you're playing blackjack at the MGM, don't automatically assume your dealer is making that kind of good scratch!! He/she might just be an extra-board only getting 2-3 days a week.

*There's a place in Henderson (by Boulder Highway) called Sunset Klondike that still offers $2 blackjack and $.10 roulette! The dealers only make about $30 a day in tokes there! In comparison, dealer tips recently are averaging $196 at the MGM and $245 at Bellagio for the first part of January.

*The state gaming board has five gaming agents personally on hand during the World Series of Poker at the Rio to handle all of the whiny bitches that play in the event each year.

*As rich as Bill Gates is, he routinely plays $3-$6 limit hold-em at various Vegas poker rooms.

*As far as the editor knows, the oldest active dealer in Vegas right now is Larry Russo, a dice dealer at Mandalay Bay. He's 84.

*As of January 15th, the dealers at the Westin have gone "table-for-table" with their tokes, meaning the tokes are not pooled. The editor seems to agree with this idea while I think its terrible. The graveyard dealers there are going to starve to death!!

*The absolute most shocking rumor (just a rumor at this point) the editor mentioned is that both the Plaza and Las Vegas Club located downtown on Fremont street will be closing soon. He didn't say if it would be the whole operation, hotel only, etc. I don't really think I believe this rumor until I hear it from a few more sources. Anyone on the board hear about this?

I heard this about a month or so ago. I've tried to get an official conformation and haven't been able to. I do know they had some investors from overseas in and they may be the salvation. I hope they stay alive.

Is part of the Plaza rumor tied in with an extension of Fremont over the tracks? i.e. overpass or whatever? And I'd also heard there was a casino dev't project for the other side of the tracks?
Lets go see steak tonight!

Thank you Rob for posting this news. I am suprised MB delears get more tokes than MGM and MC > Flamingo.

I hope the Plaza and Vegas Club can find better owners (financial and management) and I'm glad I snagged a room for tomorrow night at the Plaza in the event it closes down.

Binion's had the option to close their hotel operations yet keep their gaming license unrestricted due to the fact that they were grandfathered in (a law mandating an unrestricted license have hotel operations passed in the 1960s IIRC). I believe Las Vegas Club could continue to operate without their rooms but the Plaza wouldn't.

Thank you for sharing. I love reading about the business and tales from the dealers. I secretly wish I could be a craps or poker dealer. I have a career already and my wife won't move to Vegas (too dry and hot).

I have a question for you. At the poker rooms the dealer usually gets a buck or two per hand (3-6). What do you think that works out to per 40 hour week and do you think they are making more than the BJ or craps dealer?

It seems to me the poker dealing would make more, since I see tipping less often at the BJ table (although I have seen larger tips at BJ or Craps). At least not every hand of BJ get's a buck when people are losing.
