View of Vegas different after moving there?

I had a chance to move to Vegas back in 2008 but it didn't work out in the end and it made me wonder if I would still hold Vegas in the same regard, or get that excited feeling when I go there.
Obviously the thrill of living in a great hotel for a few days would no longer happen since you live in the city, unless it were comped there's no reason to do that.
I may have another opportunity to move there in a year and just wondered if anyone's opinion on Vegas changed after they moved there? I've heard that people who live there only really go to the strip if a friend or relative is visiting.

 

I don't live there myself, but a friend has lived there for about 3 years now. I can't say what area she lives in because I simply don't know. Anyway, she's been encouraging me to move out there, but does give one HUGE warning.

It's nothing like when you're there on vacation.

That's actually a good thing for me. I love my vacations there, but if I was there ALL the time, then I'd definitely need it to be different.

She said it takes 15-20 minutes to get from her house to the strip and she only goes to the strip about once a month for non-work related stuff. She doesn't work on the strip, but her job does take her to the strip a couple times a week I guess.

Obviously, if you move there, your experiences could differ from hers or anybody else's.

 

I have an old high school buddy that's lived out there for about 15 years and he says the same thing. As a matter of fact he doesn't even go to the Strip once a month. Only time they'll go on Strip might be to celebrate a birthday or their anniversary.

Another buddy of mine who's gone to Vegas with me for more than 20 years, stayed out there for 2 months when his sister worked out there. Now he is a gambler and he said he just got into a different daily routine than he would have on a gambling trip to keep from going broke.

 

We retired, moved there in 2008. 2010 we moved out for a myriad of reasons.

 

I've lived here 8 years. The last time I went to the Strip was over a year ago, when my sister was visiting and we went to see Aria and the Cosmo. I go to 2 or 3 locals casinos, but only about twice a week. The rest of the time it's like living anywhere else. The excitement of visiting Vegas on vacation is long gone, because I'm not on vacation, lol.

 

The difference to me is that now I have time to amass & take advantage of comps, as well as take advantage of other offers. There's no hurry now that I live here. I don't feel like I'm going to miss anything.

 

I wonder if it will be different when I move as a retiree. Will it be like I'm on vacation most of the time?

 

It will seem like a vacation at first. After a year or so it's what you make of it.

 

Word to the wise: Once you are retired in Vegas, don't treat it like you are on vacation in Vegas.

I have to admit the casinos make it very tempting. Your mailbox will be filled with offers for bogos, freeplay, free gifts etc.

 

So far I haven't noticed anything different for me. Especially since I'm right next to the Hard Rock. I am so busy working that I barely get enough time to visit the casinos much. But I do visit when I get a free day or two. I just went on a coupon run today to downtown LV.

Living here seems about the same as living anywhere else. The rent is cheaper here than it is in Orlando. I'm within walking distance of The Silver 7s the Hard Rock, Ellis Island, Tuscany, as well as the Flamingo, Ballys, Paris etc. on the Strip.

I've been over to the strip twice. Once to see the Nascar Haulers come into town, and the other day I went to the CVS in city center for the minute clinic for a sore throat and some meds.

If my opinion changes you can be sure I'll let the good folks of VMB know but for now I AM LOVING IT!!!

 

We love couponing when it comes to that stuff. I know the first year will seem like we're on vacation, and I suspect as the luster of our dream dulls it will have a smaller role in our lives. It's a three year experiment. We can stay where we are, or move to another location in the valley after really getting to know the area, or we can move anywhere else in this country if we end up burning out. But I certainly plan on starting my retirement as an extended vacation and see how it goes.

 

My girlfriend used to live on Naples, just a block south of Hard Rock. She enjoyed pretty good quality of life there.

Yes, living here is a lot like living anywhere else. It's what you make of it. Being retired I can enjoy the resorts more.

 

Eleven years in Vegas is fast approaching... crazy how time flies. Living here is not a permanent vacation and shouldn't be treated like one or you'll be back where you came from in a hurry. This city can eat you up, if you let it.

But if you're disciplined and you can take the heat, it's a great place to live. I still can't see myself anywhere else. I loved traveling to Las Vegas for the six years prior to moving, we had the best time on our visits. I always said I had to make Las Vegas home so I could travel someplace new.

After all these years I still love it. My stomach flutters in excitement when I fly home, or drive in from surrounding areas. I have a far greater appreciation for the city now than when I was tourist. I never knew how beautiful and fun the desert could be. We hike, offroad and shoot. Being outdoors is so much better than trapped in a casino. However, we still visit the strip and downtown regularly. We dine a lot, visit the bars and see shows. The conveniences of living in a 24/7 city are unmatched. We forget how spoiled we are and travels always remind us how good we have it.

It's true most locals only visit the strip when family comes to town. We are definitely the exception. We play tourist and take staycations. We take advantage of all the city offers. I will say we gamble less and less as the years go by. In fact, most of our gambling (other than sports) is done in Laughlin. That's one thing that has changed. I miss $1 blackjack and 9-20 line penny slots, and fully pay VP. Gambling in Las Vegas isn't fun for me, because losses are far more frequent than wins and value seems to have disappeared. So, I'd rather spend my money elsewhere. We're treated like kings in Laughlin so it makes sense for us to focus our play there.

That's something I'll have to talk my wife into. We are snow birds / part time residents. I've been getting killed lately when gambling. Maybe a change of pace like Laughlin would help.

If I made a day trip where would you recommend I concentrate play for best offers? I like to play $5 BJ and Craps and 25 cent VP.

Your play will stand out a lot more at a local or downtown casino than on the strip. You will also have your play tracked most accurately playing a machine vs table play.

I would recommend Four Queens or Main Street Station, since they both have quarter 9/6 Jacks or Better video poker. Playing quarter video poker, just 2 or 3 hours of play will be enough to get a free room & free play offer in the mail from Four Queens.

 

We like Colorado Belle. They're connected with Edgewater, so we focus our play between those two. Wide game selection, convenient location and both have newly renovated rooms. We get 2-3 offers a month for three free nights, with dining credits, free show tickets, etc.

I also like Golden Nugget for coin in/out full pay video poker.

We used to play downtown, but those comps and perks dried up. These days, if we play in Vegas, it's at Club Fortune in Henderson. But we took a beating our last two sessions there too.
