One of my friends told me if you win a jackpot, you need a form of identification which shows your social security number for tax purposes. If you don't have it, you forfeit your prize. Is this true? I am staying at the Paris over NYE and want to make sure I have everything I need with me.

You have to fill out a W-2 tax form for any single winning over 1,200.00. You could say, win a million dollars total and not pay a dime in taxes if each and every win was under 1,200.00.

The IRS form W2-G is issued to players and is also sent to the IRS by the casino for certain gambling winnings: (1) winnings of $600 or more from state lotteries, horse racing, dog racing or jai alai and other wagering transactions, if the winnings are at least 300 times the wager; (2) winnings of $1,200 or more from bingo and slot machines; (3) winnings of $1,500 or more from keno, less the amount of the tickets bought on the winning game; (4) winnings of $600 or more from horse racing, dog racing or jai alai, if the winnings are at least 300 times the wager.

Thanks for the feeback, however I am still confused. Do I need to bring my social security card with me to Vegas or do I just need to know my number?

Not entirely true. For transactions that total over 10k they have to fill out a CTR (Currency Transaction Report). This can be on a single or a combined win. Also if a sports bettor or a keno bettor places a dollar bet and wins like $500 (for got the exact math in the calculation) a w2g has to be filed. Man I forgot all my Reg6A traning.

They have ALWAYS asked for my Social Security card. I love IRS signups. It means I am winning.

I had to fill out a few w2's, but never had to show my SS card as proof. They may ask for photo ID such as driver's license.

If you win big... don't forget to ask if they can comp a nice dinner or give you a room upgrade! Never hurts to try....

It is unrealistic to expect somebody to carry a copy of their social security card. State / Federal issued ID is good enough.

You will need to know your SSN and have a form of ID. I would NEVER travel with my social security card.

Leave the social security card at home in the fire proof lock box. One of my group won a $1500 prize once on a $5 machine and all he had to do was show his ID and fill out the forms. Of course, Tennessee drivers licences already have the social security numbers on them. :D

You know Shock, by law you can ask any state that uses SSNs on licenses to come up with another number to use--you don't have to have your SSN on that license!

I'll have to see if I can find verification of that, but I remember from when I lived in DC but worked in VA--VA still uses SSN as the drivers license number and some of my lawyer friends were discussing it. From an identify theft/protection standpoint, it's a HUGE liability....

I was trying to find something TN specific but couldn't. There is a line here that says if your DMV uses SSNs on the license to request an alternate number.

Va residents can use either the ssn or a t-#. Many residents are changing to the T-# when their renewal comes up. I have had mine for almost 2 years now.

Actually, now that you mention it, I remember last year I had the option to check a box on whether I wanted to have my SS# on my licence or not.

By all means, leave the card at home!!!! Shock - take it off your license. It is the law & any state must offer you the choice. My identity was stollen. This is NOT something that anyone wants to go through. 6 months of painstaking research, police reports filled out with Fresno CA., Upland CA., Henderson NV., Mesa AZ., & Mentor OH - tracing & tracking credit applications & charges. Proving that I didn't open the accounts - Sears, Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowes etc... Not to mention the Western Union cash transfer, the gas fill ups & strip bar tabs, long distance phone charges etc...

They got it started by getting my SSN & date of birth & that's it. 1st stop - Walmart. If you can believe this, Walmart does NOT require I.D. to open a same day credit account. Walk in & fill out the application. Provide a valid name, social, dob & as long as the credit is good, you get $1,200 to shop with!!!! Of course that got maxed same day - in & out. Next obtain a false drivers license & your in the house. Walmart card plus California DL = big pay days in Nevada and Arizona for a 230lb. 5'10" black man from Upland (see "pic of sin" topic page 8 for the real me). I actually have a copy of the photo ID with my name & dob and his pic [IMG] .

Long story short, I had everything on him - his real name, address, phone, voice on a recording etc. but no arrests were ever made. No police dept wanted jurisdiction. He lived in Upland, used a fake address in Fresno, stole the ID of someone from Mentor, & made charges in Mesa and Henderson. I'm sure that I was not his 1st victim & certainly not his last. [IMG]

If this does happen to anyone, feel free to email me & I will help with whatever I can. Your 1st step is to notify Equifax, Experian, & Trans-Union. After that, I can walk you through the rest as I have become a self-educated expert in the area.

all our wins over $ 1200,00 have resulted in us just telling them our ss# and showing our license. But if you do not have your license your in big doo doo.

Seriously though, I have a timeline of his whereabouts on a daily basis for 2 months. I even got to listen in on the phone call that Western Union made to him to inform him that they would be unable to complete his transfer. It made me want to [IMG] when Western Union asked for me by name & this asses wife (who hung up at 1st, but realized who her husband was pretending to be on the call back) says "he not home right now".

I wanted this guy arrested in a bad way. I even offered to pay my own airfare to serve as a witness if they filed charges. I figured if I did all the work & then all they would have to do is pick him up. Nobody wanted it. That's why it's the fastest growing crime. They know that they can get away with it as long as they spread it out. I even tried the federal government, but they wouldn't touch it unless I could prove that it's a ring that involves hundreds of thousands of dollars & not just some isolated incident... - funny but I thought that was their job. The dectective in Upland said that they get over 100 identity theft complaints a week!! I did convince him to pay the guy a visit since I did all the work. He called me back & said nobody answered the door and that was that [IMG] . Did he think the guy would invite him in for coffee? What a joke [IMG] .

Wow Blackjack :( Sounds like you have been through hell and back! I am so sorry to hear about your identity theft. The lack of help from the authorities who you effectively pay their salary through your taxes is astounding! I cannot believe that!

Thank you everyone for your feedback. I thought that your State ID would be enough, but this girl at work keeps telling me its not. I believe all of you though! I will make sure to leave my SS card at home and bring my license! Thanks. [IMG]
