OK...I just got back on Monday... and I have to share this...

I was playing 3-card at Gold Coast... they have the mini-royal 'progressive' sucker-bet for $1... and I was playing it most of the time.

Ran out of $1 tokes & didn't feel like breaking another $5, so I played without the 'bonus' bet...

You guessed it - 3 or 4 hands later - I get the Ace-King-Queen of spades, missing out on a $2850 progressive.

I can't be the ONLY VMB'er this has happened to... please - share your story so I won't feel like the only fool here!

Just remember, the Lions Share was hit years ago by a guy who only played 2 coins.

So for me I usually never play side bets.... I always play Caribbean stud's but that is because it is usually a high jackpot...

When I play pai gow commission I will run my dollars though on side bets sometimes, but if I miss out on the big one.. 5k? Meh.... I would be mad but not pissed... but something that is really big, yes...

Don't have a story to make you feel better but your example is exactly why I will either a) play the side bet 100% of the time or b) never play the side bets (usually the case). That way I'll either hit one or if I do, I will have not been playing so I won't feel as bad.

    I feel for you.

Exact same situation for me. I sat down at 3 card poker at NYNY June 2013. Every other player was betting the dollar, and when I sat down I said, nah I don't play those bets. 3rd hand looked down at AKQ spades. I said....you guys aren't going to be happy...
"What do you have 3 of a kind?"
    ....no
    "Straight flush???"
    ....no

Dealer turns it over and they go ballistic. Dealer called pit boss over. Pit boss called another one over....just to laugh at me. Other players won like $200 a piece. I missed out on my $4,600.

    Tough break Top. Major bummer.......

I pretty much stick to BJ but I'll allow myself one session at a carny game per day. I always play the sucker bet. I don't play slots and BJ is a grind so I like to play a game once a day that gives me the opportunity for a huge payday. My biggest hit so far was a six card straight flush playing High Card Flush with $10 bet on the straight flush side bet.

OUCH! I usually play the sucker side bets, even if I "know" I shouldn't.... Partly to avoid this situation. The first time I played 3-card poker I got trips without playing the pair-plus side bet, but that's as close as I've been to this situation.

Wizard of Odds has info on the amount at which the 3-card poker and UTH progessive sidebets become +EV.

Missed 999 to 1 for not betting the craps 'Fire Bet' on myself. I usually bet $5 on my own roll. I don't usually bet on others save a few shooters on hunches, with around 27% HE (not so wise a bet) never-the-less a fun bet when the ship comes into port!
10 points later :grrr: I kept gently :poke: the dealers for not reminding me to bet it!
    (I bet for them too!)

We played some card game this past trip for the first time.
My wife didn't play the sucker bet and would have won about $350.
Relatively small amount but the frustrated feeling is about the same.

For me, I hit the All Small and All Tall for a clean sweep.
Other people had $10 on those.
    Me.....forgot to bet.

    That SUCKS TopCard!
    I have a similar story...only in reverse..
I was at PHo with Aaron5, and my wife a month back, and he wanted to play some 3CP, so I sat down with him, and i usually never play the PairPlus. So a few hands go by, and I finally give in to Aaron and the dealer wanting me to play the PP....first bet on it, i hit trip 10's for $150...lol
Needless to say, I played PP for a few more hands, then we all cashed out. (Still wished Aaron woulda got them, because he was playing $100 on each spot, where I was only playing $5)

This is exactly how I do it! That way if I'm not playing and I do hit, I won't feel bad..

    Damn man...that sucks!

I mainly play craps so if I am on a table that has the fire bet or the all small/tall I am playing it. I would be pissed at myself if I didn't play them and they hit.

When casinos still had Spanish 21 I always played match the dealer and actually would do better on that than the actual portion of the game sometimes.

The only sidebets I never play on blackjack are the ones that equate to poker hands...I just play straight blackjack then

I was playing blackjack at the ElCo last fall when somebody hit the Royal Match progressive for $16K. Unfortunately for him, he wasn't playing the side bet at the time. The look his wife gave him was priceless - he probably hasn't gotten lucky with her since....

The moral of the story is dont play them bets...ever, playing them on and off, and then agonizing over a missed bet is the path to madness. I've played Bj and had the dealer tap the table at my 6, 7, 8 suited, which had some 200-1 payout, like i missed out, I'm ,like 200-1? I've seen thousands of hands since that happened.

I've had people imply I should play the side bets and I always say " oh, is that a good bet?, It's pretty hard to win at the main game, much less that one"

The mini-royal sucker bet in 3-card is a little different in that it pays $6 (6:1) on a straight - a relatively common hand in 3-card. It's $50 for trips, $70 for straight-flush and $500 for a non-spade mini-royal. Still, a huge house edge, but not as poor as the CET 6-card bonus, or many of the other various side-bets out there.

In any event, I think you (& others) are correct - "the only winning move is not to play" - Joshua

    Still - it was frustrating.

The minute you walk into a casino you've made a sucker bet. Therefore, that is why I always play them. :D

I bet the ElCo bosses did a dance that he wasn't playing it too - they sweat the money

Stratosphere used to have a side bet on Pai Gow Poker where a five-card hand of a straight or better plus a pair pays on the side bet. A Royal Flush with a Pair paid 10,000 to 1, and you could bet anywhere from $1 to $10. The guy sitting next to me played the side bet every time except he forgot to place it once. Yep, he got the Royal Flush and a Pair on that hand. This was around 15 years ago.
