Not sure if this is accurate, but...

"The newly connected Downtown Las Vegas free Wi-Fi will allow anyone within a one-mile radius of the Fremont Street Experience to access a FREE 1 Mbps Wi-Fi from smart phones, tablets and laptops. The one-mile radius stretches from Main Street to Las Vegas Boulevard along the Fremont Street Experience."

    I got that from http://www.lasvegas-how-to.com/las-vegas-free-wifi.php and http://www.reviewjournal.com/business/downtown-las-vegas-free-wi-fi-turned

If you scroll down to "Downtown Las Vegas free Wi-Fi Zone" you can read it yourself.

I'll create another post to see if anyone has experience with it.

Unfortunately you need to have a clear line of signal with the FSE to get the free wifi so you are probably unable to get the free wifi from many of the rooms at the Cal, esp with binions and lvc buildings blocking the signal. I confirmed this earlier in the year (MSS unable to get signal also) but I will check again when I get to vegas in 9 days (I'm also staying at the Cal).

Other than walking to the FSE and sitting somewhere to use the signal, I was able to catch the free wifi signal in certain areas of the parking structure at the Cal (ones with direct line of sight to the FSE). I had a rental so just got in the car and parked in an area that could see the FSE. It was inconsistent though but enough for me to do my SW check in.

As I said in the other thread, the free downtown wifi was never intended to serve those trying to access it from hotel rooms. I see another post saying you need to have a clear line to FSE. I have found that is not the case. There is a free wifi access point with the word "odgen" in it, which can be accessed outside the Cal, from, you guessed it Odgen Ave (which runs along the Cal). I have used it many times. There was a time or two that I had some trouble with it, but that goes for all of the free downtown wifi access points.

Walk to the food court at Plaza in the front right where the McDonald's is, lots of tables.

I try in my room first and occasionally will find a free signal.
