Doesn't have to be YOUR favorite -
Could be current or "of all time" - if you wish.

I will only say that recently - I found a new appreciation
    for Leo DiCaprio's abilities.
I watched some older stuff of his - and I thought - wow, he was pretty good.
And I've seen him, in some scenes, make his co-stars, look like HS drama students !
He was THAT good - he made them look bad......( Mark Wahlberg comes to mind )
In his more recent films -- he has let himself play "anger".

Actresses ?......hmmm.......?.....I still gotta think ?
    *
    And yours ?

Older actors - I think Paul Newman was good in most of his films. Really liked him in Cool Hand Luke and the Hustler.

Actress - Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren

I came here to say Colin Firth and Meryl Streep, but they've already been mentioned. So I'll add Daniel Day Lewis and Kathy Bates.

Currently, I think Daniel Day Lewis is on another planet in terms of acting. I don't know who he actually is at all, he gets in character so well. I had this discussion the other day and i believe the current best in this generation are Gary Oldman, Depp, DiCaprio, and the aforementioned Lewis. I think DiCaprio really started hitting stride with Gangs of New York. For his ability, he was merely average in titanic. To me it doesn't hold up nearly as well as anything he's done in the last 15 years. Only downside to Depp is some of the stinkers he's been in. Oldman takes every role to another level, good, bad or ugly. That it's so hard to wrap my head around the fact that he played Sid Vicious, the bad guy in 5th element, the evil DEA officer in the professional, and Jim Gordon in Nolan's Batman series shows ridiculous range and dedication.

As for Female, i don't have as educated an opinion on that one. Meryl Streep was the first to come to mind. Natalie Portman is another, but the star wars prequels don't help anyone's case.

    Can't come close to two.
Ingrid Bergman and Kate Hepburn along with Meryl.
Laurence Oliver, Newman, Tony Hopkins, Spencer Tracy, Dustin, Ed Norton and Sean Penn come to mind.

Love Cary Grant movies, he is always cool.

Just watched Hud the other night and really like Paul Newman. he always seems to be connected somehow with Steve McQueen but I dont get Steve. I like a couple movies but for acting chops, Paul Newman all day .

Also Rock Hudson, loved Ice Station Zebra.

Not too long ago i saw It Started in Naples with Clark Gable and Sophia Lauren, loved it, loved it and would watch it again many more times.

For females, Joan Crawford is one of my favorites, her and Betty Davis. They can really be creepy.

I watch alot of black and white movies, they give you a real appreciation for the craft you just dont see with modern movies.

Another great movie is The One That Got Away about a german pow who escapes. Another great war movie is 49th Parallel. about a german submarine that comes ashore in Canada and the manhunt that ensues.

Gotta show some love for Sean Connery too. The Hill was outstanding.

For me Denzel and McConaughey as far as male actors.

    Charlize on the female side.

    Just outstanding.

    There are definitely many more.

Philip Seymour Hoffman was an amazing actor with incredible range. The things he did with roles that weren't meant to steal films were unreal. I know I'll get killed on this but I think Annette Bening is a terrific actor, and I think Jennifer Lawrence's body of work will be great when it's all said and done.

Actor: Marlon Brando and Paul Newman and Sir Laurance Olivier ( sorry, I just can't pick one)

Actress: Helen Mirren, Ingrid Bergman, Kate Blanchett, (imo, Meryl Streep is a bit overrated)

Agree that Phillip Seymour Hoffman was gone way too soon - incredible talent and range!

Right now, I think Johnny Depp is a hell of an actor and has been for some time, also Ed Norton. I also LOVE J. Law... Jennifer Lawrence.

Meryl Streep is not overrated at all in my opinion. She had a role where she played a violin player. She didn't know how to play the violin. She learned in two months.

Bogart reminds me of a Tom Cruise. A little guy that plays the tough guy and seems to play the same exact role in every movie he's in.

Continuing my Noah theme, Russel Crowe is very good actor.

    Great answers !

    I still can't come up w/ an actress ?
Meryll Streep does get alot of hype on Best Actress.......can't argue too much on that...but, I don't know ?...
Paul Newman ....and Ed Norton --- I can agree with.
One guy who I thought was gonna be GREAT........but it fell apart somewhere ?...was James Woods.
Yes, I actually thought James Woods was gonna be great.
He said after "The Onion Field" -- there was a lack of roles - cos he played such a great, horrible villain -
nobody wanted to hire him !..........type casted.
    *
Gene Hackman..........always overlooked !........how many movies has THAT guy done ?...wow !

All around classy actress Audrey Hepburn - there will never be another one like her. Robin Williams -- incredible as Mork. If you have never seen The Survivors with him, Walter Matthau, and Jerry Reed you are missing a very good movie.
