OK... here's the picture... Thursday AM.... first morning for my DT Vegas trip, and I'm standing in the GN Sport Book. I have never placed a bet in a Sports Book before, and I have a $20.00 bill burning a hole in my pocket.....and want to giver 'er a try. What do you all recommend I try...to make it a fun experience? (As a side-note... if my attempts at the Canadian SportSelect Lotto bet system are any indication of my prowness at choosing winning teams.. well.... I SUCK!!!!).

Thanks for your suggestions all. :)

I'd suggest walking over to the Plaza-better odds.

Now, as far as your $20, either a baseball or NBA playoff bet, if that money is just burning a hole in your pocket. I don't know...is hockey still going on?

    Good luck!

I'd suggest hockey, the schedule isn't set for Thursday, but there are likely to be some good games that night.

Well Greg if you are in the book by 10:30 am,there is one early baseball game going on that day.(1:45 pm ET-10:45 am Vegas Time!)
Mets @ Cards.. Assuming you would like a "quick result" to see if your first bet wins or loses...
Pick a team and to make it a lot more interesting- also pick if the game will go over or under the total runs the oddsmakers have set on the game.
If you like defensive/great pitching games to watch go under,if you like lots of hits and home runs,go over.

Tell the teller you want a $20 parlay X team and GAME either over or under. Both of your selections must win though to cash that ticket!
And that ticket will pay more and cause you extra anxiety as the game rolls along..But that is gambling isn't it?
Best wishes and let us know what your bet was!

Do you have a favorite home town or other team that you rabidly follow and root for? If so, if they are playing, make a money line bet on the other team. If your favorite team loses, at least you won the bet. If your favorite team wins, at least you are happy about that despite losing the bet.

The only question is, "How much happiness do you receive, in monetary terms, if your favorite teams wins a game?"

As a general rule, you never want to bet on any game that involves your favorite team, because your emotions will usually prevent you from being able to critically handicap the game.

I don't agree. You don't ever want to bet against a team you are fanatical about. Too much mixed emotion. I make a few homer bets every year, and they are always my favorite bets.

Favorite Home Team to bet on?

That won't be a problem...unless the Oilers on out on a PGA Tourny some where that Las Vegas has a line on.. :evillaugh

I think I'll just wait until Thursday AM, and see who's facing who in the NHL playoffs at that time... and then toss a coin.

    Thanks all.

There should be two hockey games on Thursday... what you might want to do is bet that both games go to overtime.

Because of the odds, a two game parlay like that should turn $20 in to $350-400 if both go to OT.

    so....next round starting....

OK...looking at possibly trying... San Jose Sharks / Under for the potential bet... Hoping the over/under is @ 5.5...but we'll see. Joe...you indicated taking a walk over to Plaza to place a bet there? Are the lines typically that different between hotels. Thanks again all... T-minus 26 hours till boarding the plane. :)

On football, which is the only thing I bet, I have found the odds can vary by a point, or sometimes even two, between Cal, Queens, Elco and past experience usually has the Plaza as the better of them.

On future bets, say Superbowl or MLB to win the pennant or World Series, you really have to shop around because they can be all over the place. But, I can guarantee you will never find the best odds at Golden Nugget:nono:

All that being said, after the Plaza closed and remodeled, they brought in a different company to handle the sportsbook and maybe the part about them usually having the best odds, is a thing of the past? I don't know.
