Per LVA, the Western wants to keep its gambling license. It had until January before it loses it for good. I tried to post this on another Western thread, but it was closed...??

I don't know the exact regulations, but in order to keep that license, you have to offer gaming for at least one day out of the year and it doesn't have to be on the property. When we lived in Vegas and I don't remember which place it was for, but they set up slot machines in the desert with tents and generators, to qualify the requirement.

I think that might have been the Castaways (old showboat). I think they wanted to keep the license while they decided what to do but eventually just closed down.

Actually I hope the western keeps their license with the hope that one day they renovate or reopen again.

I don't think anyone on this board can say they loved the western more than I did. I was a regular tourist patron. I drank the one dollar drinks, played the 2 dollar blackjack, waited hours for the 1 dollar craps, and hung out and argued with the locals over chicks and such. Played the penny slots, enjoyed the nickle blackjack machines, became friendly with the pit bosses! About the only thing I would NOT do is eat there. Except for one time I had chicken tenders and they weren't so bad.

However, if they renovated the western, and reopened, I doubt it would be ANYTHING like the former incarnation and think it would be spiced up like the gold spike was. You can say alot of things about the western and the spike but when they painted up the pig at the spike...it killed any desire to really want to play there anymore. I long for the days where the smoke was so thick it would choke a horse.....and the cheapovegas guys used to bring horses in there all the time.

It's the same thing with the western, it had that distinct local flavor that no other place in town really had. If they want to reopen it as a painted pig..... I say they just raz it and open a grocery store.

The Western, they tore the hotel down but the casino bldg is still there. I dream of a day when the Western will rise like the legendary phoenix from the ashes and be restored to it's former glory...glory being in the eye of the beholder.

    Loved the Western...

Like theshaah, I loved the Western and its one-dollar craps game. I came in late to the party, being too creeped out to go down there until about 2008. After that though, my girlfriend (who also loved the game there) played quite a bit. Sometimes, we'd show up at 3pm when the table opened, play for a few hours, go have dinner - elsewhere of course - and then play until the table closed at 11pm. We also played the (real) penny slots and used our matchplays and such there.

The Corona always tasted the same there as at the Bell'agio, and we could play a lot longer.

You sir are correct. They sold it some time ago, no longer under old management.

Unfortunately one of the founders, Mark "Stinky" Sinclair died of a brain aneurysm in 2006. Shortly after that they sold the website. That website was my favorite of all Vegas websites.

Correct: When stinky died the remaining guys said they didn't have the same passion for what they used to do. They had gotten older, and therefore had gotten bigger bankrolls. They use nickels now instead of pennies to chuck at the MGM Grand.

I also was a regular reader of big empire and cheapo vegas. They were what originally inspired me to continue coming to vegas in order to get the best value for my money in town bar none!

They were offered quite a lot of money for the rights to the cheapo vegas name and website and they took that and ran with it. I'm happy for them.

For a while they kept cheapo boy as a mascot....but the last time I went to the site I couldn't find any reference to him.

There's a spin on that here: "What happens in New Hampshire stays in New Hampshire....but nothing ever happens in NH!"

I think he was "Casino Boy"... loved his snide remarks on just about every reviewed site, hotel or casino feature, or table game.

I'm sure the temporary once a (edit) year casino you're thinking of is to keep the license of the Moulin Rouge.
