    not a surprise.

i started going to vegas in 1997. for years my vegas experiences were limited to the big players, primarily on the strip, with an occasional cameo downtown, and an occasional cameo to the big names off strip, namely hard rock and rio.

in recent years i've started to find my way to the smaller, quirky, less glamorous joints in vegas. my life isn't better for it, but it's fun to see vegas in all its shapes and sizes. so glad i walked down and visited the klondike several years ago. (i can't believe i ever found my way into silver city before it was demolished.)

i never found my way into the western. but the stories about it that i've read here make me wish i would have seen it for myself.

2 trips ago I took a walk to see what was happening east of the Blvd. I was happy to see improvement and things happening. I walked as far as the Western. I didn't drink or gamble but walked through never realizing that it was to be history soon. Those old places had an ambiance unto themselves; if only those walls could talk! Will they say that about Wynn and Paris someday

I never went into the Western and now I'm concerned about which casinos I'll ever get to see. I recently saw a documentary about the Western, maybe I saw the link to it on here, it's on Vimeo. But it was heart warming and very sad at the same time. The patrons were pretty down and out but you could see that the filmmaker made it with affection for the people.

I also never spent any time in IP or O'Shea's and I really regret that. I was too enamored with the big casinos. I still love the big, fancy, casinos, but regret not seeing the smaller ones. On my DT trip coming up I plan to follow a casino crawl that someone, I forgot who, posted in a thread here. But it was basically drop $20 in a VP machine in a casino, have a comped drink, and then move onto the next. He had more details and I'm sure you could develop your own parameters for the crawl. It sounded like fun, it may take more than one crawl depending on your tolerance to alcohol. You could even combine it with getting $1 chip from each place. Either way, I'd like to see some of these older casinos before they're gone.

i'm not familiar with the video, but it's easy to find. http://vimeo.com/35557956

i'll have to check it out. looks well done, although it takes its sweet time getting to the point. but the pics/video of fremont street is entertaining.

When I stayed at the Western my friend walked up to the check-in counter and said with a straight face " do you have a convention rate?"

    RIP Western
