I can understand why they don't want you videotaping aboard the plane when there's a "situation", but I didn't realize you aren't supposed to take pictures of the planes. If I get a window seat I always take a few pictures along the way too. So far no one has ever said anything and I don't try to be sneaky about it.

Good information. Had no idea it posed a problem. Thanks

I suppose it would be asking too much if people just asked if it was ok to take pictures.

Thats what i did my last trip. they told me nicely what i could and could not take pictures of.

This drives me nuts - the whole "security" thing and "an abundance of caution" are going too far. Taking a photo of a plane parked at a gate is not a security threat.

    Insanity I tell you. Insanity.

Bottom line - folks could easily take "undercover" pictures, but if joe tourist takes a picture in the open, it is a big issue.

(does ANYONE with a half brain not realize how easy it would be for someone with bad intentions to take extensive still and video recordings at an airport without anyone knowing)

    Insane.

    Yep...I am with you.

I mean hell...there is a whole website with airplane pics on it (airliners.net) where spotters sit on roads outside the airport fence lines and snap pics.

This is why we see places shut down and bomb squads brought in when someone leaves a backpack sitting on the floor at a mall. Or why people are perfectly ok with being x-rayed by TSA to get on a plane.

Absolutely. It's about the appearance of safety, not actual safety. We're intimidating and inconveniencing ordinary people, making them vote their fears, while training the bad guys to be smarter.

A long time ago, a few years after 9-11, I asked the security people at both OMA and DEN what their policy was WRT taking photos in the terminals. Both answers were almost identical. Don't shoot the security checkpoints or security at the gates (which they had then). Otherwise feel free. (I had a recently-repaired camera with me that I was just itching to try out.) :)
