I'm still pretty new to VP and am not sure how many people play the double-up option when its offered. I don't hear much about it on these boards though. I like to play it, especially on the lowest winning hands (e.g. high pair, 2 pair). Its one of only two bets in a casino with zero house edge but technically even better than the odds bet in craps because you have the option of playing it after a win instead of tying it to your bet beforehand. I don't always play it, but when I do I typically go for just 1 or 2 double-ups, occasionally 3 depending on how I'm doing.

Do you play it? How many times in a row do you double-up? Is it commonly offered at MGM properties ($1, $2, or $5 JOB) in Vegas?

How come never? That was the only thing I liked about video poker machines, it was fun to successfully double up a win

That's correct. It's a 50/50 bet. Absolutely no house edge. Therefore it will decrease the overall house edge of the game which is obviously good, but it will increase the volatility of the game which can be good or bad depending on what your preferences are. I'm in the camp that prefers some higher volatility - the good thing about the double up is you can decide hand-by-hand on a lower vol game like JoB to juice up the volatility with a double-up when you're in the mood and ignore it whenever you're not in the mood.

I usually turn off the feature. Only when I want a change of pace. I would maybe do it on a pair. It's hard enough to win, when I get more than my bet I want to keep it. VP gives you a chance to have some impact toward the outcome. When you start playing the double game, it's like playing slots which is all luck.

I usually do it for the lower payouts and occasionally even on the bigger ones. I’m all about variance…the more the merrier, baby!

I’m guessing the folks who say “never” are playing positive EV games. But, since I stay on the strip, that usually isn’t an issue for me.

Funny you should mention that. I was playing VP at the Palazzo last year and won 4k on a Royal. The thought did cross my mind for a millisecond!!!

LOL, I like the way you think, davis237!

I hit 4 deuces on a DW game at Palazzo last year and I spent about 5 minutes debating with myself about whether or not to try to double up. I had been getting my ass handed to me that trip, so I eventually decided it would be wise to take the money and run.
