We've never stayed downtown and never particularly wanted to. BUT I book an airfare steal yesterday ($55pp round trip non-stop from Orlando, with 1 shared checked bag.) I didn't realize it was a holiday weekend. Strip room rates are obscene IMHO. I currently have 2 nights @ Flamingo, 3 nights @ Hampton Inn Tropicana & 2 nights @ Harrah's. I'm looking at replacing the Hampton Inn with either Downtown Grand or Golden Nugget so we can walk places and don't need to use the shuttle.

Reviews of the rooms give a slight edge to the Downtown Grand. What is the difference between the deluxe and premium rooms? Are the deluxe just smaller or also older? Will location make a difference?

I'm not crazy about the Golden Nugget's casino - low ceilings, smoky, dark, but hotel is in the middle of the action. Rooms are a great value as compared to other options. Any suggestions?

Between the two, what would you recommend and why?

Would you expect pools to be open? I was at Harrah's same time frame last year - pool was closed and there was no sign advising guests that they could go to Bally's to use the pool (I found out while at Bally's). It was hot that week last year, but I do know that it's usually cooler.

    Thanks for any assistance!

Veteran's Day is Wednesday, November 11.

    It's not a holiday weekend.

I would expect the Golden Nugget pool to be open. I believe that one time we stayed there in the November time frame and it was pretty empty.

    Golden Nugget

    Hours (weather permitting)
    Swimming: 9:00am - 7:00pm (Sun-Thur), 9:00am - 9:00pm (Fri-Sat)
    Pool Viewing: 7:00am - 12:00am
    Shark Chute: 9:00am - 7:00pm
    Hot Tub: 7:00am - 12:00am
    Bar Service: 9:00am - 12:00am
    Cabana and Daybed Services: 10:00am - 6:00pm

    Downtown Grand

    Hours of Operation:
    Pool Deck: 9am-8pm
    Pool Bar: 9am-8pm
    Pool Café: 11am-5pm
    Pool Deck Open Seasonally

You should contact each property to check those things, as the have the EXACT schedules.

Downtown Grand rooms are nice. Golden Nugget rooms are OK. I really depends on where you want to be. Golden Nugget is square in the middle of Fremont Street. DTG is a block away, but a short block walk.

Yeah Vets Day is one that isn't moved to the closest Monday, it's always November 11. Since it's a Wednesday this year I don't think it has much to do with high room rates.
