First I got the "pretend to be the IRS call" where if I dont return the call they will take legal action. This came up on caller ID as Larkspur CA,415-413-3041.
The next one was unknown caller, some Indian dude pretending to be from Windows who wanted me to sit at my computer and follow his directions.
I must be on the master sucker list somewhere,I 'm on the Dont Call List ,maybe I need to update that.

Am I the only one that doesn't answer phone numbers that I don't know? If it's something legit, they'll leave a message and I'll return their call.

Yeah, I don't either. But the fake IRS call left a message on my voice mail last week.

I get the windows one alot,If I'm in the mood I play along, first i tell them I'm pooping so give me a min(or I'm watching a old bonanza episode, then I'll start talking about ben cartright or little joe), then i pretend to not know how to operate the computer, I had one guy get mad and tell me a child could do it, I said "oh, you need me to get a child?", stuff like that, try to waste their time.

I used to ask them "which computer?" I tell him we have several. Don't answer the land line anymore. Just call back if a message is left.

Get Caller ID and "Anonymous Phone Blocking." If you have both, the only calls that will get through to you are calls that identify their origination phone number (which eliminates nearly all of the scam calls -- otherwise, they get a recorded message that says, "this phone number does not receive anonymous calls; if you want to call this number your must dial *87, etc...).

If any spam callers give their number and get through, if you have an appropriately programmable phone you can then individually block those numbers. And, if you wish to do so, you can still report any numbers that get through to the FTC "Do Not Call" Complaint website.

they do have a magical thing called caller id.

I am suprised that people actually answer the phone when they dont recognize the number. I even turned the ringer off on mine so you had better be in my cell to get ahold of me. Even then you will be pretty lucky if i answer it.

I have never, ever in my life recieved good news from a phone call so why bother putting stress on myself. seems foolish.

I love it when they call from Mumbai and say "Hello my name is Harvey"

That lights me right off. If the FCC ever implements an F bomb fine I'm losing one of the horse farms! The Solar Panel scammers all seem to be from the same area as are the IRS and Credit Card folks. I keep them on the line for just long enough to get their hopes up and then unleash a tirade! It's good to vent!

    Nope.....If I don't know a number, I don't answer it and immediately look it up......99% of the time, it's a number I don't want to call back. :)

Our ringer has been turned off for years, anyone I really want to talk to has my cell number.
I was joking around when I recorded the outgoing message but everyone liked it so I left it. It's ......hi you have reached the %%^€€^^ call screening device if your a moron hang up now, otherwise leave a message and see where you rate.

I get some funny messages from it. One time I was here and someone called about five or six times in a short time but hangs up. The nurse from my doctors office finally try's leaving a message but she's cracking up, so I pick up. Turns out everyone in the office including the doc had called to listen to it

Told my daughter about it and she starts cracking up, said ya all the nurses In her office had listened to it also.

We still have a landline, but only because Ms. Gecko's company pays for it. It occasionally comes in handy for sending faxes, but 99% of the time calls are routed to an answer machine. We have several phones scattered about, but have only one ringer on low. I subscribe to a host of mostly free technical magazines, but got totally burned out listening to non-English speaking sales reps. There isn't a single magazine that's worth it. Most of the time, our only indication of an incoming call is a cordless phone display lighting or a flashing message indicator. Like LVHooked, "Our ringer has been turned off for years, anyone I really want to talk to has my cell number." Important messages are sometimes left and calls returned, but I wouldn't play any casino game with such poor odds!

And speaking of cells, I almost never answer calls from unrecognized numbers. Unfortunately, Ms. Gecko feels compelled to answer what could be work-related calls that could originate anywhere on the planet. About half the time, she wishes she hadn't answered.

We just got rid of caller id, since it was $12+ a month and we always screened anyway since we don't get many calls on landline and most are junk. I also just let them leave a message if important and then call them back or pick up when they start leaving the message.
