    My Trip Report

Sunday Jan 25. Flight from CAK to LAS went well with a connection in Chicago. I've since decided that all our future flights to Vegas will be direct flights from Cleveland because the plane from Akron to Chicago was just too small and the connection adds too much time to the overall flight.

Arrived in Vegas at 11 am and with everyone's suggestion used Dollar and the Dollar express program to walk straight to the parking deck at the rental center and did not have to wait in the Dollar line that had about twenty people waiting. Picked up a small Dodge Caliber for $7.50 day. All the cars we had to choose from appeared very abused. I walked around the car twice noting all the dings on the ding paper Dollar had given us.

We're off and arrive at Harrahs about 15-20 min later. We left the luggage in the car while we went off looking for check in. Check in line was about 10 people long and I wondered if everyone else was checking in as well. After a short 5 min wait was at the counter getting my 4 comped nights (still not sure how I got these since we're not big gamblers). Did not even try the twenty dollar trick since I was already happy with the free nights. The person at the counter asked if I wanted to upgrade for a fee, I declined. She then asked if I wanted the quiet side or the loud side at Carnival court. I choose the quiet side.

The room was pretty nice, very clean and also pretty small. I'd say about 11' wide and 20' long. Just a bed, two nightstands. a small table with two chairs and the tv/closet/minibar hutch. The was no view but I did not care. Overall the room was perfect for sleeping, very quiet. Not very good for relaxing as the chairs were not made for relaxed seating and I'm not comfortable sitting on the bed in my clothes. We decide for future trips we'd try to find room with a chair or couch for sitting.

The first day we walk around Harrahs, walk next door to IP and see the auto exhibit with free tickets from Harrahs. After that the wife decides I'm hungry and we eat at the IP buffet, its not bad and seemed clean but the selection was not great. I'd say go elsewhere for the price.

We gambled a little at both Harrahs and IP. At IP I tried a few VP machines but could not find any good payout for .25 cents and decided to play a little roulette. Put $5 down on my two favorite numbers 14 and 27 and 27 hit right away. I was pretty happy and the people that were already playing could not believe it. The wife was busy watching the dealertainers so I had to call her over and brag over my first big win. I played number 27 two more times but lost and left with my winnings.

We then decide to venture downtown. We visited and signed up for player cards at a few of the casinos there, including Golden Nugget, 4 Queens, Binions and Fremont. I try VP downtown and decided that VP was not really for me. If I'm going to sit in front of a machine and feed it money I need entertained more that a VP machine can give. My wife then found Wizard of OZ slot machine everyone talked about and played that for a while. I must admit that I played it too and was very entertained while playing it.

I forgot to go to MSS and that was my main reason for going downtown in the first place. We ate dinner at Fremont(I think) some fast food place in the casino. Chinese food that did not sit too well.

Monday - We drove to Valley of Fire state park and it was wild. When we got there we paid $5 to get in and I told my wife I think its snowing. And It was just barely, by the time we got to the first parking spot where you can get out and climb the red rocks it really started snowing so we gave up our hike and got back to the car just in time for a frigging blizzard. We're from NE Ohio so I know snow and this stuff was almost white out, some folks on the road had pulled over to wait it out I guess. So the drive through the park did not go very well since we could see nothing out our windows. Once out of the park and back on the highway the snow stopped. Once back in Vegas we stopped at a convenience store and someone took a double look at our car cause it was still covered in snow.

We then stopped at Redrock casino and gambled a little there. The wife played slots and I played BJ for a while. I wound up even, not sure how the wife did. Next stop was the Palms. We did the same thing here, signed up for their players club and played BJ or slots for an hour or two.

Next stop, the Orleans. So did you know the Orleans has a 2 FREE cocktails coupon? Well they do and the wife does not drink so I got to drink both. We headed back to the hotel to park the car before the 2 margaritas really kicked in and started the walk to dinner at Ellis island. Since I was not too buzzed I thought we should stop at Bills and see Big Elvis on the way. This was the wife's first time seeing him and she really enjoyed watching him. Meanwhile I played BJ and had 2 more .99 cent margaritas!

Now for the margarita kicker, did you know Ellis island has a FOUR free drink coupon? Well they do and since I'd been drinking the other margaritas I thought FOUR more can't hurt!! We got our table after a 15 min wait and had excellent service. We ordered the 6.99 steak special and I passed on the beer since I'd carried in three margaritas. The food was excellent and I we decided we would eat here at least once every time we got to Vegas. I don't know what the negative reviews are for this place because I thought it was great, and that's not just the margaritas talking because my wife agreed.

I will say the walk back to Harrahs was a lot warmer for me but seemed a lot longer than it took to get there.

Tuesday - We had breakfast at the Mcdonalds next to Harrahs. We walk to the Venetian to use the ACG coupon for match play and free slot play. This hotel is pretty nice but a little too nice for us. My wife turned a profit on the free slot play and came out $30 ahead. What was nice about the Venetian is the slot club folks told us to go to the Everything Las Vegas store on their property to get a coupon book for $15 more free slot play. We also visited Bellagio to see the conservatory. Nice but not really my thing. Took a quick walk through Palazzo. We had lunch at Margaritaville thanks to some gift certificates I got from my daughter for Christmas. Got the cheeseburger in paradise but was not real impressed. Headed over to Caesars and gambled a little there but did not really win or lose anything. Last stop for the day was the Hard Rock. I'm into rock but this casino is a little weird to me, not sure why. I used the match play coupon and lost. Played Craps and lost $20. This casino just gave me a weird vibe so we left. Back to Harrahs so I can work on my Craps skills.

Wednesday - Woke up early again to play a little craps. Started with $20 and walked away with $70. Just played the pass line and odds. did play a couple of fire bets and one time had three numbers marked but thats about it. After breakfast at the Mcdonalds next door to Harrahs We walked back to the Venetian ti use the $15 free slot play coupons and the wife turned these into another $40 or so. We then walked to the Wynn. The Wynn is a very nice casino but again a little too nice for me. Seemed to be a lot of stuffy people here. We signed up for the players card and spent about an hour playing a few slots and left.

We wanted to take another drive and I had heard about a old saloon called Pioneer Saloon in Goodsprings, NV so we made a drive there. Its about 25-30 minutes from Vegas. Once we got there it was not what I thought at all. They say it has appeared in many movies but I'm guessing it was not an outside shot. When we arrived we could hear some pretty loud people in the saloon arguing about something. We tried to go to the general store next to the Saloon but it was not open. The arguing got so loud we never even went in the Saloon. I did not want to get in the middle of a couple having a few drinks too many in the middle of the day.

The good thing about our drive to Goodsprings was we stopped at Primm Valley casino. I played some dollar BJ and dollar Roulette while the wife played some nickle slots. The inside of the casino is pretty nice and looked like something you'd see right out of the fifties. It was actually fun gambling there and we stayed for a couple hours.

Once back at Harrahs we decide to take a walk down the strip to MGM. Along the way there was an older gentleman and his wife walking towards us. When the older gentleman walked past a porn card slapper he held his hand behind him and grabbed few cards and snuck them into his pocket. His wife turned and almost caught him but he quickly pointed out something ahead and pointed his other arm up while stuffing his pockets. It was the funnest thing we saw.

Once at MGM I had told an older employee that I had heard about an older progressive slot machine that had not hit yet and could he help me find it. He had no idea what I was talking about and I could not remember what kind of slot machine it was or what it was called. After I got back home I found out its called the MGM Lion's Share Progressive slot. Does anyone know if this machine is still there?

Back to Harrahs Wednesday night after a couple more of Bills .99 cent Margaritas. We leave early Thursday so we called it and early evening at 11:30.

Of course I'm up at 5am thursday so I decide to sneak down to the casino to once again play my favorite numbers on Roulette. I put $5 on 27 and 14 each and 27 hit again. Nice, another $175 to take home. I play 27 and 14 again and lose. I have an odd $5 so I decide to put $3 on 27 and $2 on 14. Winner, 27 hits again. I quickly cash out, visit the cashier and collect my winnings. Back upstairs to show the wife I can leave Vegas with some cash in hand.

All told I leave Vegas with and extra $260 and the wife has $170 and change. This is a first for us to return home with extra gambling money so we are pretty happy.

Checkout at Harrahs is easy, got lost for a few minutes trying to find the rental car return. But once there returning car was easy. Back in the Airport and through security with an hour to spare before our flight. I find a Star Wars slot machine that i've never played and when I'm sitting down I notice a quarter on the floor. I don't know why but I think finding a quarter was almost as fun as winning at Roulette. Anyways, first spin on the Star Wars machine hits for $10. I decide winning at an airport slot would be the highlight of my trip and cash out and go wait for our plane.

One more thing, while we were gone we got about 10 inches of snow and then a freezing rain in Ohio. This made for an interesting time getting our car uncovered in the airport parking lot once I realized I used my snowscraper on my sons car and forgot to put it back in my car.

All in all a great trip and I can't wait for our next one. This time in the summer.

Thanks for all the great tips from everyone here
Here's some pics we took. Mostly cars at IP and snow at Red Rock

Ok - more specific on directions to that machine LOL - I totally forgot it on the last trip. I would be coming in from the Rainforest entrance area.

Yes, Yes, I too would like to see where it is, I pumped 200$ through it in 2005! I bet it's the same machine. Or maybe an urban legend....

Great report. Sorry you got one of those teeny rooms at Harrahs. There are some nicer ones there.

    Good luck next time.
