    My Trip Report

First trip report and my so far only Vegas trip…
Memory a bit hazy in part of it being some months ago (mid July) but mainly because I didn’t sleep much. This means I’m bit unsure what happened when so no day by day report, try to do it in categories…

    The way there:
Me and my lady wanted to do a trip, somewhere not been before. Well how about Vegas? Why not seems like a place you should visit at least once. Said and done a week of planning, checking flights, hotels and what to do there, off we went.
Flight from Sweden with change in Chicago went without problems, got to Bellagio after a 14h trip at 6pm, completely beat (about 2 at night our time). Check in went smooth, no real line and the nice couple in front of us told us to go ahead to the desk ahead of them (guess we looked as we felt). Got our booked room on 17th floor, Salone suite with lake view. At check in I asked for two room keys, the slightly grumpy person behind the desk asked me if I really wanted to give a key to that woman with me.. –you do understand she will be able to charge things to the room? (the object in question was standing right next to me). For a sec or two I was contemplating asking him if he thought I had a death wish, but just settled with saying –yes, perfectly fine.

    The room:
Spacious room with a very comfy bed, clean, big nice bathroom, big window by the tub overlooking Caesars. A fabulous view of the fountains. If looking for something negative to say, would be that the room was a bit worn, could need a freshen up in carpeting and furniture. Also half the lamps didn’t work , didn’t really bother us as spent very little time in the room so didn’t bring it up.

    Activities:
Walking, walking, then some.. more walking.
Needed some supplies so first thing was a walk to Walgreens past PH, our first real experience with the temperature.. god it was hot, 100-110 during our 5 day stay. Like walking into a furnace coming out from the AC in the hotel.

Shopping, fashion show mall, Caesars, some outlet, miracle mile… on it went, lady ecstatic, me just grateful each time we went indoors for the AC.
One open market she just planted me by a fan with cold mist… could have stayed there all day. Don’t get me wrong I had a blast, always something to gawk at. On that subject, I quickly learned the importance of avoiding eye contact with all the peddlers and porn slappers, area around PH and inside was horrible.

Managed to sightsee most of the mid and south part resorts, spent one night on Freemont Street, great show and packed with people.
One day used for a guided tour to Grand Canyon, south rim. Great trip with small group, us, two more and the driver/guide in a Hummer. Completely worth it but hot as.. well it was hot :p

Had some unplanned time one of the days, took a taxi to the gun store.. the smile on my lady’s face when firing the AK47 kind of stayed with me, but.. trying to not think too much about it.

Caught a show in PH, Vegas! The show. Very nice, got good seats in the front. Bit old school show in a fairly small setting. Placed an order for a drink when we were seated, wasn’t prepared for a plastic birdbath sized mug with blinking lights… took me couple minutes to figure out I could turn the bloody thing off.
Last night was planning to go up the Eifel tower at Paris but they had closed it for risk of rain (never rained).

    Gambling:
Never really gambled before so was looking forward to have some fun with that, but with all the activities, was mostly restricted to when my better half had turned in for the night. Did manage to sit down at some slots when resort hopping but lady quickly got bored so moved on. Got her to put a 20 in one time, pressed a couple times then lots of noise, she said.. oh look… had hit 300 win, heartwarming to see her quickly press collect and then eagerly ask where can she cash it in :) (yes, went towards more shopping)

Did have my time at about 11-3 at night, going up 6-7 in the morning each day meant I wasn’t that alert. Did try roulette, and VP, both bored me. Was watching some craps but felt a bit intimidated by what looked like fairly complex game and no way I wanted it on my head throwing those things..

Started looking closer at the slots, turned out I kind of found it very hypnotic and relaxing, only problem was that it was a bit too relaxing, kind of phased out several times. Looking at the machine wondering where did the money go or couple times… when did I get that?

Then we come to BJ, had some reading material on the trip over, got a fair idea about how to play it. Basic strategy and wot not so when I saw an empty table at 25 min with what looked like a friendly dealer. I marched up and sat down (in the middle, not the best place I learned). The dealer was friendly, she had no problem seeing me being a novice, gave me friendly tips and I had a great time, for about 20 min.
Then… well the table filled up with a party and my personal little nightmare started. Sandwiched at the table I lost all concentration when one of them started trying to use an old players card, that over with, trying to use a 1000 chip from PH, when that was out of the way the play started again. The first one seemed fairly drunk sitting on one end. One of his mates were next to me about as drunk but not as active… didn’t pay attention and was talking to one more member in the group that was sitting behind him so took him some time to place bets and so on… my novice brain started to forget about the basic strategy. Then drunk man at end spills his drink over the table… haha, now the dealer stands there soaking it up and pulls out a hair dryer.. lol.

The dryer going full speed… I’m thinking.. hm… waitress comes up asks me if I want something to drink. Ask for water, my head messed up as is atm. She comes back fairly fast, gives me a bottle of some generic water, happy with that and her speed I give her a 5$ chip, she mumbles something and goes away. Couple minutes later she is back and hands over another bottle, this time brand water…. By reflex I grab it then she gone in a flash. Game now started again, table dry.. and me sitting there with hardly any elbow room holding two bottles of water.. try to do best I can maneuvering bottles and chips.. make some really bad hits and stands.. looking down trying to move one bottle down between my legs, I look up and see a new dealer in front of me… my friendly neighbors joking away and being merry I stand up and throw the dealer a 25 and scraping up my remaining chips when the dealer tells me, let me color up… took a min for my brain to get the meaning of that.. anyway BJ seems fun I just need to be better prepared next time :Þ

    Eating:

We decided early wouldn’t go for any fancy dining, we went for burgers!
The early mornings meant we got into the breakfast buffet without any lines so we did that every morning. Bellagio serves a decent one, no real complaints and everything we tried was yummy. So stuffed each morning never really needed any lunch. First 4 days had the same server, remembered what we wanted and joked around in a pleasant way. Met some nice people from different parts of US for breakfast conversations.
Managed to try burgers at Stripburger, that French burger place inside Paris, in an out burger and Bellagio room service. Stripburger by far best of them but none bad.
That French burger place… some outrageous outfits they get the waitresses to wear.. corsets?

Had dinner buffet at Golden Nugget, man.. that was bad! Dry, bad tasting, dirty floors with dropped trampled food bits and lousy service, feel queasy just thinking about it.

    Taxis:
Before we got to Vegas we thought we would use the bus, nope that one was slow as.. something very slow. So Taxi it was, fast good way to hop to north end. One thing.. some of the drivers, had one I swear was an old car thief, thought we were done for.. driving like the police were in hot pursuit.. another one was driving around in a taxi with lots of duct tape holding pieces in place and no working AC, “solving” the problem by having the car windows rolled down.. yes that worked great in 110 degrees… lastly.. my favorite, the one that didn’t speak English, swear he didn’t understand one word I said, and when he started talking answering good knows what he thougt I asked.. no idea what he said.
Also had some good ones to be honest, friendly and helpful.

Oh, almost forgot, probably trying to suppress the memory.

Lady wanted to go to an open mall.. about 20 min drive from the strip to the west… well getting there np, but back.. nope. Last shop were in, they helped call a taxi, would take about 15-20 min.
Making the story short. 2 more calls to the taxi company, one assurance and on blatant lie they been there and didn’t see anyone, we finally got a taxi picking us up after waiting 1h 30min, this in the earlier mentioned low temp of 100+ degrees.

As I said, first TR I done and maybe it got a bit lengthy… try to be shorter next one and little more structured.
Going back in April, this time with dedicated gambling time and lady o to the spa

My wife and I loved your post! So many parts reminded us of our first trip to LV. You will be surprised how much more smoothly your second trip will go, as you will haved learned so much from your first trip.

That is what we hoping John, realy looking forward to it. All the little things we went past, that drowned in the sensory overload. Had no idea there were a tram going from Bellagio... Can't wait :)

Loved your report, however that checkin clerk at the Bellagio should have been reported to his/her supervisor on that stupid statement. That really would have made me furious but glad you didn't let that ruin your vacation. Just curious, did you ever get back to the BJ tables? Thanks for sharing your report.

No, think I made a good judgment in I'm not savy enough to handle the stress if ended up at a table like that again, will use the time till next trip to get some practice so don't have to think that much each hand. Had some good fun with it so won't give up yet.

You right on the clerk, just glad we were able to joke about it, telling lady that he probly thought I picked her up on the way from the airport... As I wrote, was completely beat from the trip, wanted to get to the room before keeled over :)

You'll remember your first trip to LV the rest of your life. My first time there was in the early 80s. I took the bus over from Long Beach with a buddy of mine. I left town about a day later with two pennies and three cigarettes and had a blast. I only lost about 200 bones so it was no big deal. Even though I lost, it is one of the trips that I remember the most.
